Nigerian detained at Beijing airport with 87kg of marijuana

Published: Thursday, 19 Mar 2009
Customs police at Beijing airport caught a Nigerian man carrying 87 kilogrammes of marijuana, in the country‘s biggest drug bust so far this year, state press said on Wednesday.

The Nigerian, whose identity has not been disclosed, was apprehended early this month attempting to bring 72 bricks of marijuana wrapped in black plastic bags into the country, the China Daily said.

The man arrived in Beijing on March 2 and checked the suitcase containing the drugs into airport storage, the paper said, adding he was detained the next day when he returned to collect it.

It was not immediately clear if the man would be formally arrested and charged with drug trafficking.

Police told the paper it was China‘s biggest drug haul this year, the AFP stated.

Drug trafficking into China has nearly doubled in recent years along with a rise in illegal narcotics use, the paper said.

The number of registered drug addicts has risen by a third in the past three years to more than one million, the paper said, citing the Public Security Ministry.

Meanwhile, Spanish police have arrested 23 people, mainly Nigerians, who are suspected of running an email and letter scam that is thought to have defrauded over 150 people in the United States and Europe, the Spanish Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

The gang sent out 20,000 letters every day to potential victims, making them believe they had been left an inheritance of up to 53 million euros ($69m) from an unknown family member, it said in a statement.

Those who responded received official-looking but faked documents asking them to pay administrative costs or taxes to collect their inheritance and some were even encouraged to come to Spain to speed up the process.

”Once they were in Madrid they were taken to the supposed offices of a security firm where they were shown chests or safes which apparently contained large quantaties of money,” the statement said.

Officials did not say how much money the victims lost but in similar schemes operated by other groups thousands of dollars are requested from those who show an interest in the letters.
Those arrested operated from Madrid and the surrounding areas.

Police searched 13 residences and seized over 20,000 letters which were ready to be mailed, 30,000 euros and 55,000 email addresses of possible victims and a large amount of fake documents as part of their operation..

What an idiot (exactly why the guy's doing this type of sh*t). Why would you go through customs with that much marijuana concealed in a suitcase?

The smell of marijuana is one of the most recognizable smells out there.

Nice assumption, but no, not really. I was just stating the obvious.

Would you have been more comfortable with me typing the same old same old "Kill him, off with his head, I'm so embarrassed to be Nigerian" in a very melodramatic manner?

The standard penalty for this sort of offence in China is a swift trial followed by an AK bullet to the back of the head, after the condemned man has been forced down to a kneeling position.  The cost of the rifle bullet is then billed to the family of the dead man, and his vital organs are harvested for sale in the underground market for human organs needed in medical transplants.  This fool is about to be re-cycled in the most gruesome way imaginable.

The weed smuggler in this case is truly phucked now.  He no doubt received assurances from a Nigerian witch-doctor that his suicide mission would go undetected.  This a classic case of Darwinian natural selection at its most unforgiving and cruel.

Severely punishing drug-connected crimes is one of the outstanding characteristics of China's criminal legislation for drug control. The revised Criminal Law fully embodies this principle. First, the law comprehensively specifies the types of drug-related crimes, guaranteeing that various drug-related criminal offenses are punished by law.

The law specifies 12 crimes, which cover the smuggling, trafficking, transporting and manufacturing of drugs, the illegal holding of drugs, the harboring, transferring and concealing of drugs and illicit drug-related money, the smuggling of materials for manufacturing drugs, the illegal trading in such materials, the illegal cultivation of mother plants of narcotic drugs, the illegal trading, transporting, hand-carrying and holding of seeds and seedlings of such plants, and the illegal provision of narcotics and psychotropic substances, as well as the criminal punishments for these crimes. In addition, the penalties for the laundering of drug-related money are stipulated.

Second, the law specifies that the criminal responsibility of a person for smuggling, trafficking, transporting or manufacturing narcotic drugs, regardless of their quantity, be legally pursued and punished. The quantity of drugs shall be calculated according to the verified amount of the drugs smuggled, trafficked, transported, manufactured or illegally held, and not in terms of purity.

Third, economic sanctions are applied against drug-related crimes. The law specifies that property shall be confiscated or a fine imposed for drug-related crimes, aiming at depriving drug criminals of their illegal income and destroying their economic ability to commit drug-related crimes again.

Fourth, those who make use of or instigate minors to smuggle, sell, transport or manufacture drugs, sell drugs to minors, or lure, instigate, deceive or force them into taking or injecting drugs, and those who have again committed drug-related crimes after having already been convicted of the crime of smuggling, selling, transporting, manufacturing or illegally holding drugs shall be punished with severity.

Fifth, criminals who smuggle, sell, transport or manufacture large amounts of drugs shall be sentenced to death. The fact that China legislatively punishes drug-connected crimes with severity is required by the reality of the anti-drug struggle, and shows China's stand for strict drug control.

China currently uses two methods of execution. The most common is execution by firearms, which uses an assault rifle to fire a single shot of an expanding hollow point bullet to the head.[citation needed] Lethal injection was introduced in 1997. It differs from its application in the U.S. in that it is carried out in fixed locations as well as in specially modified mobile execution vans. As lethal injection becomes more common, debate has intensified over the fairness of relying on lethal injection to execute high officials convicted of corruption while ordinary criminals get executed by firearms. It is public opinion in China that lethal injection is an easier way for the condemned to die.

In the past the government collected a "bullet fee" (子弹费) from the relatives of the condemned.[1]

for the guy to be that brazen with the amount of drugs he had, to me points to the fact that he either knows individuals or groups of people who have sucessfully done it before or this isnt his first time of doing so,hopefully this will dissuade others, nigerians in spain arrested for scam,in china for drugs e.t.c these nigerian leaders are not just wicked but diabolic and demonic

They said this was the biggest drug bust of the year. Gosh, at times you feel ashamed to be a Nigerian. If one finger on your hand is stained with palm oil, it affects the rest. No ones going to focus on the positive Nigerians doing great things, rather its going to be another nail into the coffin of naijas international reputation.
I hope Dora's project works, cus we need a lot of rebranding.

For most of you here who don't understand the way this works let me educate you. First of all, it is immediately observed that it is almost impossible to attempt to carry this much drug in to an airport without been noticed, especially an international airport in China of all places. So this means, either this guy was dumb or maybe has a family back home that is been held hostages or like you said convinced by his with doctor that this was a possible feat.
When neither of the latter are true, then that leaves only one more option, called the shuffle. This is a trick used by many organised crime family, gang and corrupt police and political figures and this is how it goes. You find some one easily disposable (preferably low IQ) to act as a "mule" or trafficker between your supplier e.g the Marijuana drug cartels in Eshan (where they openly grow weed in large fields in full view of everbody) and the demand the triads or other Chinese family. The mule is set up to be busted (arrested) at the airport at which point the police or related anti drug agency would intervene and confiscate the drugs. The receiving cartel who have people working for them at airport, police and agency are then notified of the arrival of the merchandise. The swap is made for dummy drugs keeping just a few real brick for evidence in court and press. After the court case the man is found guilty, and executed, the drugs (dummy) are ordered destroyed by fire or dissolved in a solvent. In some instance even the few authentic bricks that were left for evidence are picked up. So this poor hapless fella never stood a chance right from when he signe up for this. He ironically enough, is probably the victim. Trust me, those drugs will arrive at their anticipated destination. What cop want to go against the chinese crime familys?? The supplier and the customer are celebrating to another sucessfull transaction as we speak. Dont ask me how I know this. I plead the fifth
