True words, Tpia.   Any master criminal who has managed to steal and hide away 16 billion US dollars cannot be classified as "powerless", irrespective of where they roam on planet earth.  Calling Obasanjo powerless is wishful thinking at its most impotent.

This is a very interesting thread.  Obasanjo was not a good president. Though he did some good things while in power, he was an absolute dictator just like the late Gen Sani Abacha. Nigeria did not change much under Olusegun Obasanjo. While Uncle Sege was in Power, a lot of corruption was going on in the country's various states. Electricity was epileptic and the Universities were in a poor shape. I don't want to bore you with the pisitives and negatives of his tenure as Nigeria's president. To me, OBJ did not do well.

However, I believe OBJ is a product of the Nigerian way of doing things. He is a product of our environment where hardwork and excellence are not appreciated. If we want Nigeria to change, then we need to start celebrating hardworking people openly. We need to do away with our cuture of envy and jealousy directed at those who are better than us. I am still surprised that one of our young girls who made it to NASA in the USA  for a SPACE simulation program was not celebrated in the country's Media. This girl who schooled in a local secondary school in Benue State represented Africa at the event,  and was not on the cover page of any of our newspapers on magazines. Meanwhile, magazines like TELL, The News, Newswatch etc were busy putting corrupt personalities and scandalous incidents on their front pages. This reflects the state of the Nigerian Media.

I also think Nigerians need to start creating support organizations and charities to tackle poverty, joblessness and illiteracy. Change must start with we Nigerians ourselves. It is not enough for us to keep blaming our leaders while we sit back and do nothing. How many of us actually care about the behaviour of teenagers in our places of worship or in our respective communities? And what are we doing about it? How many of us have bothered to know how the primary schools and secondary schools we attended way back are faring? Have we even bothered to donate some gallons of paint to make sure the schools or classrooms are repainted? Yet some of us complain about the dilapidated condition of our former schools. We need to realize that we are all leaders in our different spheres of influence. And one day we will all be accountable before God.

One thing I know is that Nigeria can change if we start being concerned about our immediate environment and start doing small things to bring about the much needed development. We should not wait for the government to do everything. In Britain, charities are working hand in hand with the government to battle poverty, cancer, illiteracy, Wife battering, homelessness etc etc. Many Nigerians are arm chair critics. Let us get involved in the development of our country. I have started doing something to help Nigeria develop. Start something too. The Nigerian Government is even waiting for ideas from us all. I wish Nigeria well. Cheers.

This is the right kind of thinking. If just a tenth of Nigerians thought like you and believes in what you wrote here, Nigeria would have long come out of its mess! Keep up whateva u are doing bro!

@ PapaBrowne

Thanks for the encouragement. I believe Nigeria will become a country to reckon with if we all join hands together to make the country great. I got a phonecall from Nigeria this money from a childhood friend. My friend was born in Britain and he's british with a British Passport. However, he spent his childhood years in Nigeria. He's currently in Nigeria due to his mother's death but I want to let you into this secret. My friend is considering settling down in Nigeria. He told me Lagos State has changed and that Governor Fashola is doing a good job. My friend is seeing a lot of good business opportunities around him. I believe my friend concerning his positive comments about Lagos State. He told me he has been going all about Lagos to see things for himself. I told him about the current electricity story about Ilorin and how Kwara State Residents are enjoying about 16-20 hours of Light everyday.

The change Nigeria needs has started. People are coming up with a lot of ideas now. Nigerians are returning home in trickles for now, but soon, the trickles will turn to avanlanches. We are the ones that will build a New Nigeria. No one will do it for us. The elections in 2011 will throw up more progressive minded candidates who want to change things. The PDP will eventually be dethroned as Nigeria's leading party because smaller parties will start winning Local Government and councillorship positions.

Let us forget about OBJ and start doing something about the development of Nigeria. I want to openly thank Seun Osewa for creating Nairaland and Nairalist. He is one of the heroes of the efforts made to develop Nigeria. Thanks a lot, Seun. God bless you.

Nigerians,

Are indeed the biblical Saducees and Pharisees, Hypocrites!. Say one thing and mean another. Blame your self inflicted problems on others and not yourselves. Never part of the cause of a problem, Yet never a part of the solution either. Huh

I applaud the few Nigerians on this thread that have written boldly about their inclinations and are not scared to air their views intelligently nor are afraid not to do ''FOLLOW FOLLOW''.

We all stay at a vantage position, and then throw mud at one that made an effort.

Will you or your fathers have done any better. You talk and discuss matters you know nothing about.

In YORUBALAND, it is Law that we respect our elders in public (,  AND I AM SURE NOBODY IS OF OBJ'S AGE HERE. YOU HAVE FATHERS AND I AM SURE YOU WONT TALK OF YOUR FATHERS ''ESPECIALLY IF THEY GET TO BE PRESIDENT'' THE WAY YOU HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT OBASANJO ).

I want to say that all Yorubas who are here and have said bad about BABA OBASANJO are Yoruba BASTARDS and are to be so regarded. That you have the opportunity to discuss online does not mean you should run your mouths like water pipes or petrol nozzle. Dont drip what you dont have!

I am highly appalled by the way and manner you have abused this Stateman of Africa, this same man that has held this country from disintegration & WAR and have only been called upon in the time of crisis to help out by channeling a cause for our dear country.

Many of you, you all know yourselves especially on these thread only blabber. The problem is not Obasanjo. Is he not a product of the same society you selves are from, ?

If you are asked, What can u do to solve the problem of this country, ?, NO IDEA, !

But you stay aloof , very far off and throw bad words as though u are some angel,  I am disgusted & disappointed at you all who have said bad about our Nigerian Leader.

I would rather the problem is not in our leaders but in the followers.

This same man gave you the opportunity to speak freely in this country, Now you are using that same opportunity to WAR against your benefactor,

Where were you and your families and your Voices during the Era ??

''Instead of looking at a half filled glass all you can see is a half empty glass''.

I hope you deal with your Naira thats going to 500naira to 1 dollar (which am sure you know is also Obasanjo's fault), and raise another external deposit of 30B dollars after spending it soon (I wonder au many of our past leaders left such deposits and infrastructures down for us).

I again wonder if you have a better president or head of state that you can mention that have served you any better.

All we enjoy is cursing and apportioning blames, why??,  CAN U DO ANY BETTER,

IF YOU CAN WHEN AINT YOU THERE,  Angry

IF YOU CANT FIND A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEMS OF THIS COUNTRY, I WOULD BETTER APPRECIATE IT IF YOU KEPT YOUR MOUTH SHUT AND STOP RUNNING YOU MOUTHS & KEYBOARDS NEEDLESSLY! Angry

A few weeks ago I was hanging out with some congolese musicians and they were talking about the music scene in Congo.  Then they mentioned some of the biggest artists in Congo, I'm not sure if it is Papa Wemba or Koffi Olomide, more likely Koffi olomide, but they said he can never come to Europe again.

Surprised, I asked why.  Everytime he wants to do a show in Europe the promoters get all sorts of threats from demonstrators and Congolese activists threatening to disrupt the show and cause trouble.  Then there is the danger of sabotage from all angles.  Why?  Because he has openly come out in support of the corrupt regimes that are inflicting all kinds of hardships on the people.  You know the praise singing african musician types.

While I don't condon any of that kind of behaviour I'm beginning to think that that is probably the best weapon we have as oppressed africans.  It is too risky to demonstrate in Africa but those of us here can do our best, within legal limits, to make life as hot as possible for all those african leaders that plunder our futures and our childrens futures.  I'm not just talking about demonstrating when people like OBJ try to give lectures but even heckling them when they are just on holiday.  Not allowing them to enjoy their ill gotten gains abroad.  Imagine a sit-in around Obj's holiday home everytime he comes abroad, causing media attention and all the embarrassment that will come with it.

It's just an idea.

@OBJ critics

It is either you people are not well informed about Nigeria or you re blinded by  hatred or tribalism or both. most of you refused to access the man from objective point of view, and some of you even anchored your accessement of the man  on frivolous allegations from the pages of newspaper, some of those allegations are being repudated now. It is a shame that educated people like Jakuma and co-travellers could not access a man objectively without being subjective. Sometimes I wonder if you people know the complexity of the entity called Nigeria. An objective examination of how we got to where we are now would have been instructive, but most of you are too lazy to find out. Little wonder most of the arguements could not be anchored on any credible evidence other than information from the pages of the newspaper. It's a pity, people should not allow their frustrations to intrude on their judgment.

State a few of those frivolous newspaper allegation.  Especially the one's that have been repudiated so that we can assess for ourselves.

How can people like Jakuma and co make an objective assessment when you, his staunch supporter, will not provide the facts and figures.

It was your same brother who did nothing tangible on roads, education, infrastructure, electricity, healthcare.

Too many fools on this board. I consider Obasanjo as a man that has tried his best for a Nigeria.
Ask yourself:

How many presidents has left power willingly to democracy in Nigeria.
How many president cleared Nigerian debt.
only fools would think that a nation that was destroyed for over 40years will the repaired in 8 years under the stupid democracy.

If people don't think. Democracy cannot work in Nigeria. How would you expect one man to enforce truth and honesty where the majority voice is considered truth. democracy is a voice of multitude. That the multitude are crying Crucify him does not mean they are right ( Example is Jesus),     Democracy is simple demonstration of craze.

The same people obasanjo critics on this board will do worse if they have the opportunity to become president,
You think because you are president under democracy you can just do anything you want? Fools

I find it quite amazing and appalling that someone could come here and defend OBJ even more than his children and immediate family. I know it is not a tribal issue because most Yorubas (both elite and lay men) dislike the man and have NEVER liked him or anything he stands for. It is only a few yorubas who might have benefited from OBJ that tries to blackmail the rest with all sorts of sentiments.

A good person like a shinning star can never be dimmed. If Mandela should appear in the middle of Oshodi all the area boys would pay their respect, see how london celebrated his last birthday with fanfare and not with eggs and tomatoes. Same goes for Gani, where even hardened criminals paid respects to while in prison.

So why do you think OBJ is always stoned with pure water or eggs wherever he goes if as you people claimed did a wonderful job for Nigeria.

The most unforgivable sin of OBJ among numerous others, was to corrupt Nigeria,s electoral system (political corruption is worse than economic corruption)by installing charlatans in all facets of government. Nigeria might require over ten years to get out of the problems caused by OBJ, just as IBB's june 12 problem plagued the country for over 6yrs. His attempt at perpetuating  himself in power is still robbing us of credible leaders. Nigeria leaders today is a huge joke, eg, Yaradua, goodluck, mark, (even the much celebrated speaker, i do not know his antecedents).

OBJ has never won an election fairly in his own ward not to talk of his own state. Now if his such a good man as claimed by his fans why is he hated by people closest to him.

Todays vanguard newspaper

Obasanjo has corruption cases to answer—CACOL
Monday, 23 March 2009

ABUJA—The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL), yesterday reacted to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s declaration that he had been cleared of all allegations of corruption by the nation’s anti-graft agencies.

CACOL, in a statement signed by its National Chairman, Mr Debo Adeniran, in Abuja, insisted that the former President has a case to answer, describing his declaration as an attempt “to launder his image.”

Adeniran said, “Nigerians demand to know why they have continued to grope in nation-wide darkness and industrial collapse due to power failures even though Obasanjo claimed to have spent almost 14 billion dollars on the power sector.

“Nigerians demand to know why Nigerian roads are the highest traffic killers in the world even though Obasanjo allocated over 300 billion naira for road rehabilitation in 2001 alone not to talk of several other billions voted for roads that were never constructed” he added.

He alleged further that, the ex-President “authorized the illegal release of billions of naira from the NNPC, PTDF and other government parastatals to fund his ill-fated third term agenda.

“Nigerians demand to know why our refineries have continued to remain redundant even though ex-president released about 120 million dollars for their maintenance in the year 2000.”

“Nigerians demand to know the extent of the president’s culpability in the Willbros, Siemens and the Haliburton bribery scandals. Nigerians demand to know the source of Obasanjo’s purchase of 200 million shares in Transcorp.”

“Nigerians would like to know how a man said to have just about twenty thousand naira in his account by 1999 has come to own a University, several multi-million naira landed properties, companies, state-of-the-art automobiles and many other choice properties all over the world by the time he left office in 2007.”

“ Where did Obasanjo get the money to purchase thousands of hectares of land in Badagry, Ogun State, Oyo State, and other States in the country,” he queried.

He disclosed that, “ at the level of CACOL, we are still investigating some of his properties in neighbouring Republic of Benin , other parts of Africa, Europe, America and other parts of the world.

“Anyway, it is gratifying to note that Obasanjo conceded in that interview that officials in his government were corrupt and that he was ready to face trial if found culpable on corruption charges,” he added.
