Age Barriers To Graduate Employment In Nigeria
« on: September 30, 2006, 05:27 AM »

Age barrier as a limiting factor towards graduate employment in nigeria.

Sir, lets wage this war against age barrier been imposed on university graduates by employers of labour in nigeria.  This is a grand ploy to disenfranchise many of us job seekers from the labour market in this country.  A situation where an employer wants a director to be within the age limit of 35 years is very un nigerian ,considering the hurddles inherent in our educational systems and the highny politicised bottlenecks in securing a joib offer in nigeria, please i want the national assembly to enact a legislation prohibiting employers of labour in nigeria to employ graduates who are above 40/45 years and who are still strong physically and intellectually strong to deliver on the job.

Please this is very frustrating when able bodied men are denied jobs here, but when they are lucky to get us dv lottery , they are found fit for regular employment.  It does appear nigerians don't like their citizens one bit.

If someone is deemed too old for available job, perhaps the person is old enough to start his own business?

Yes, the legislatures should address this issue! i only seee it as a means of streamlining the number of applicants for a particular job and it's quite unreasonable, after all the stress gone through to get a certificate.

obviously this is sick, its totally a discriminatory act and should be treated as being illegal. even developed countries who give free education dont discriminate as regards to age when it comes to employment.

something needs to be done about it.

Since we are always copying America, thats the reason.

when America drops their age level, we will drop ours. Soon, Nigerians will be looking for 20year old PhDs with 10-years experience.

Angry the age barriers is an issue that must be dealt with.just imagine somebody that went to school with the intention of spending 4years at the university and at the end  spending 8-9years in the school .will u now tell me that the age barriers will not cauth up withhim or her,it will .My people this is serious war that need to be  address very well.in the develop countries they employ people based on what they can do not on age .so my suggestion is let begin to criticize such organizations who want to make the people in this  age bracket limitation frustrated. also let such organization employ without age restritionthank you

Age discrimination is the main area of discrimination which is protected in some other countries but which was not directly protected in Nigeria. Laws outlawing discrimination based on age changed from today-1 October 2006 when the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 came into force.  The Regulations have arrived in advance of the December deadline set by the Equal Treatment Framework Directive (2000/78/EC) which requires the UK to implement national legislation preventing age discrimination.

Although the legislation is new and complex it gives some sort of indication of acceptable and unacceptable practice in the workplace which stipulates that an individual must be judged primarily based on skill and abilities to perform on the job rather than age. The House of Assembly is too busy legislating on furniture allowance maybe when they finish they may be able to find time for this debate which is crippling our economy.
Please see http://www.cipd.co.uk/EmploymentLaw/FAQ/_Agediscrim/_FAQ/QA_9.htm for more details.

Whose fault is that?  Would you have sympathy for someone who "doesn't want to" get a job?
When you are undervalued by your potential employers, the logical answer is entrepreneurship.
Nairaland exists because I knew that without a degree I won't be able to compete in the job market.
Why is it ok to discriminate on the basis of a piece of paper but not on the basis of age?

Again whose fault?  That is why people should save money when they are young.

How many Nigerians really have money to save when they are young? My impression is that most people accumulate debts to finish their education with the hope that they can repay them when they get jobs.

I think this need to be addressed. We are force to tell lies and make forgery about our real age. There aren't going to be enough faithful workers in the market. The employers should know that they might just be getting the wrong people into their organisations. May God deliver us all.

this is a pity because here in Benin Republic, no one cares about your age, all they are after is to know if u can deliver, infact as a foreigner there is no space for u until the indigens are provided employment for. Who cares about your age here. For those of us here who are graduates and can speak and write french very well, they will still prefer their school cert. holders to u, why? just because u are a foreigner but in our own dear country the reverse is the case. Is only in Nigeria where a foreigner has an upper hand eventhough the person is a dropout where he is coming from.
Tell me how u are expected to have 5 to 8 years working experience in any managerial position and still be 26 year or below 30, this is just arrant nonsense because they are forcing every job seeker to lie about his or her age, of course this is already rampant now in our country. Nobody works with his real age, what is going on? please can someone tell me.
