Yaba Market Shut Down Yesterday
« on: April 04, 2009, 10:57 AM »

Our Dear Yaba Market have just been demolished yesterday 3rd April 2009.

The worst part is that there is no alternative place for all these  people I mean another place for them to stay, dont forget that some two or three years back, the famous Tejuoho market was burnt down by God knows who, and most of these folks at the yaba market are those whose shop was among those that burnt down.

We all know that following Gov. Fasholas quest to make Lagos state a mega city that one day yaba market will be demolished as well, but couldnt it wait till the Tejuosho market which is still under construction is completed?
Also a lot of other people from other demolished market have now relocated to the so called yaba market, now it is gone, where are all these peolpe going to?

I wish I could get the pictures to post here but I couldnt take any shot because of the diappointment or do I say depression on the faces of all the guys and women I saw, so I also felt for them, I couldnt just take any shot at all, but if any one has any pls post for people to see.

I believe some people will be sent back to the village; Olorun Ma je

They should try other options e.g Relocating back to their various state where they would find numerous opportunity to make it better and even spend less in the process. (Lagos is too expensive for a common man to live in)

How can people be accommodated in a state that's overpopulated?

Urban planning isn't xenophobic.

We need to realize that what Governor Raji Fashola is doing is good. There is no gain without pain. Lagos needs to be sanitized and made very organized. I'm sure BRF will find somewhere for the traders to sell their wares without them obstructing traffic and throwing so much waste around. I also think it is time for people to start thinking of settling down in other states. Lagos is not the only place where money can be made. Do you know how much money is made at Bodija Market in Ibadan daily? or the Oja- Oba market in Akure, Ondo State? What the Lagos State Government needs to do is to construct Modern Markets for traders that are far removed from areas where people live. Cheers.

Making the poor poorer without affordable alternatives is no way of creating mega city. Mega cities are built by people financially empowered  thru good governance. Nigeria, including Lagos has an average life expectancy of 47yrs and over 80 per cent live below $2 per day and  compounding their problems thru demolition is TELLING A DYING TO HURRY UP AND DIECry Cry Cry

for the mega city, hav u 4goten that rome was'nt built in a day, it should be of gradual process not by jampading everythings together d way is being by fashola presently.atleast b/4 demolishing of a place occupied by a particular people which is a legal citizen propably cum indigen of a country/city there should b a place to relocate them in a

unfortunately for you, you're quite wrong. The number of Lagosians in other states cant be compared to the number of people from other states in lagos.

@topic: there's a railway line running through Yaba which has been turned into a large roadside market. It seems to me they're probably trying to clear the main tracks.

If the rail system is rehabilitated from its currently dead state, wouldnt that help more people in the long run.

Part of the chaotic miles-long Yaba Market in Lagos, Nigeria, is set up along the railroad. When a train comes through, vendors snatch their goods away from the tracks, then regroup and set up their stalls again.

is this a good state of affairs? Huh

I feel bad for the traders at the market and Yaba market is one of my favorite places to shop, but their local govt chairmen should be queried on what alternative arrangements have been made. After all, these people collect their dues every month.

Nigeria: Yaba LCDA Begins Demolition of Illegal Structures

February 9, 2009

Lagos — Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State, would soon begin the demolition of illegal structures in the area, to compliment efforts of the state government at making the state a Mega City.

The council boss, Jide Jimoh, who spoke with our reporter in his office at the weekend, stated that the council would no longer condone people erecting illegal structures.

According to him, affected structures have been identified and their owners notified to remove such structures or have them demolished.

Areas that would be affected include Simpson Street, UNILAG road, Oyadiran Estates, Adekunle, Borno Way, Sabo, Iwaya road, Onike, Harvey road, Queen Street Akinwunmi Street, Commercial Avenue, Herbert Macaulay Way, among others.

Jimoh also disclosed that the council officials, led by him, stormed the Sabo Modern Market recently and confiscated wares of those selling at unapproved locations, while shutting a particular shop in the market.

He stated that the council had visited the market several times to warn the traders about trading in unapproved places, with little or no response from the traders.

It was also gathered that over 1,000 handset spare parts, being hawked in the open were confiscated to serve as deterrent to others. "There are spaces for them to trade in the market. If they can't carry out their duties, we will help to do it", he stated.

However, the chairman disclosed to Daily Independent that over 1,000 illegal structures and shanties will be demolished in the next few days in Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

Jimoh also stated that already, illegal shanties, shops and kiosks, at Yaba bus stop, have been cleared, while those trading on the road have been driven away to ensure free flow of traffic.

The proposed demolition, according to him, is to sanitise the council and rid it of nuisance, to ensure orderliness in the area.

Lagos Shuts Firm, UAC Estate

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, in conjunction with Operation Military Emergency Security Assistance (OP-MESA), this morning, shut down UACN quarters on Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
It also shut down Molaplace Nigeria Limited, Ojota, over ‘environmental nuisance’. The UAC quarters was shut because sewage effluents from the quarters are discharged into the drainage channel on the Bourdillon Road.

According to LASEPA General Manager, Mr. Rasheed Shabi, the property would remain closed until UACN complies with the environmental law of the state by halting the discharge of sewage effluents into the drainage. He warned that any breach of the directive would be visited with stiffer sanctions against the company and its officials. Also, this morning, Molaplace Nig. Ltd, Ojota, was shut for non-submission of environmental assessment report, non-payment of mandatory environmental charges since 2005 and poor spent oil management.

About 200 staff of the company were evicted by the military men and LASEPA officials before the place was shut. However, staff of the company complained about the poor welfare of the staff, adding that some of them that had worked for eight years were being paid N15,000 per month.

Twenty-Four Families Evicted To Avert Death, As House Nears Collapse

A stitch in time, they say, saves nine. To avert the tragedy that occurred at Idi-Araba during which more than 10 people died when a building collapsed about two weeks ago, executive Chairman of Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area, Dr. Adebayo Samuel Adesola, has issued a 24-hour quit notice to the 24 families occupying a two-storey building on the verge of collapse.

The dilapidated building is located on 8, Odofin Street, Abete, Ijora, Badia, a suburb of Lagos. The two-storey building, which has 24 rooms, P.M.NEWS learnt, was constructed over 20 years ago without any approval from the State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development. Alhaji Raji Bajepade, the owner of the building, who resides at 33, Shekoni Street, Coker-Aguda, told P.M.NEWS that the building was initially a bungalow before another storey was added to it. He added that he did not obtain any approved plan and survey plan before adding a new floor to the building.

He pleaded with the state government not to take over the property, as it is the only source of his livelihood. He also assured that tenants in the building would pack out as ordered by the council chairman, adding that he would demolish it immediately the tenants are out. In a swift reaction, the Apapa Council boss, Dr. Adesola, stated that he cannot wait for the building to collapse before saving the occupants. He said that was why he gave them 24 hours to pack out of the building.

The council boss also revealed that all the agencies charged with the responsibility of regulating activities in the housing sector have been informed about the building. On the plight of the tenants, the council boss stated that he had called for all the names of the tenants in the building, so that the council could give them assistance. “We should not allow human lives to be wasted. It is too obvious that this building may collapse any time. “This building is a time bomb for the people living there and we should not allow what happened at Idi Araba to happen here before we start looking for solution,” he stated.

Mallam Abdulahi Arena, a tenant in the building, attributed the state of the building to the nonchallant attitude of some other tenants who he said contributed to the dilapidated condition of the house. Mr. M.A. Abass, the Vice Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Builders, Lagos state chapter, attributed the dilapidated state of the building to the swampy land on which the house was erected. He stated that the land was sand-filled with refuse and instead of the house owner to seek for the advice of the builders and everyone that has knowledge of soil testing, the landlord decided to build the house on his own and this is the outcome.
