Mammy Water: Myth Or Reality?

I have heard of their existence, but how can it be proven? I even heard from some relatives about a certain girl who was kidnapped by mamywater, and was subsequently released. A childhood friend of mine told me that her elder sister was stoned by mamywater and she sustained a wound. I highly doubt if they exist, and would relegate such stories as fables, meant to either entertain or scare individuals. Not that I don't believe in the existence of evil forces, but as for mamywater, their existence get as e be.

One story that I heard is that you could be 'lucky' to stumble upon one at the stream. The version is that they are afraid of human beings, and usually, when you see them, they are usually engrossed in taking care of their hair. Upon seeing you, they will flee into the river, leaving behind their combs and other belongings. If you take any of their items, they will harrass you in your dream, pleading with you to return it, in exchange for any amount of money in the world. Of course, the end of the story is that, you could capitalize that as a one way ticket to riches.

Being an "Eyen" Akwa Ibom, does not mean that I have to fall hook line and sinker to the mamy water story.  I schooled at Obot Idim which is very close to some streams in the  Afaha village. I used to go to the stream to fetch water, as a junior student, and never, I repeat, never did I witness any surreal experience at the stream, even at evening time.

Have you ever seen these mermaids before? Dont get me wrong, I believe in the existence of evil, but that mermaid story sef, get as e be. How true are these stories that if you see a mermaid combing her hair, she will get startled, and then dash to the river, leaving behind her hair accessories? And if you even leave with her stuff, she will haunt you in your dreams? How true is it that when they 'kidnap' you to their abode, at the bottom of the river (a miracle that you wont drown in the first place), that you will serve them for some years, before you are being released? Please educate me. I don see things for my eye, but that stories surrounding the existence of mermaids eluded me, till I moved abroad. If there are no verifiable proofs, then it should be shelved side by side with the great book of fables and myths of the Greek legend. That way, one can also point out the contribution of Akwa Ibom State in Nigerian mythology.

P/S: If they do exist, I don't even want to see them!!!

Haven't seen one either but I'm sure they exist.Hell, Spiritualists even talk about marine spirits disturbing girls and stuff(You might want to look for Elechi Amadi-Author of The Concubine) or try going to the Beach at Eket and spend the night there-Warning-there hav been cases of disappearances though.

But Seriously I think they exist-let me know if u eventually find one

  yeah mammy water is for real. when i was in ogbe primary school effurun, warri. the creature called mamaid came out one hot afternoon to dry her skin by the side of the river, that was the first time i saw her, so beautiful. they are for real and exist as u and me. ok

The Ogbanje in Igbo is the evidence of Mammy Water.

When the fallen angels were cast down from heaven with Lucifer, many of them were scattered in the air, rivers, seas, ponds, lakes, forest, valleys, mountains, etc. And they had sexual relationships with humans and gave birth to a corruption of both devils and humans such as mermaids and mermen.

My father communicated with them. And my mother saw a mermaid.
I have seen those possessed by Mammy Water spirits manifesting.
My father was one of them. And he took me along to midnight invocations at the seaside in Lagos.
My father always said we came from the water. But I rejected every lie of the devil.

A neighbour met a white blonde at the Bar Beach on the Victoria Island in Lagos as she was drawing strange figures and letters in the sand. He told her about me and she later came to visit me. We were very close and understood each other like twins. But I was suspicious of how she came to me, so I never even kissed her or slept with her until she left.

I have had other strange encounters.
Because, I was an Ogbanje before I went for deliverance.

Another strange evidence was the case of my elder sister who was only 12 when my mother sent her on an errand during the Nigerian civil war and she did not return until past midnight. My mother asked her how she crossed the river that everyone must cross by canoe or boat to get to our village, and she replied that when she got to the river at night and did not see any of the canoe men, she crossed the river. Our elders said it was impossible for anyone that cannot swim to cross the river and it was even more dreadful to swim across it in the night. They told my mother that she had been taken by the marine spirits and only returned to deliver the message my mother sent her to fetch. And she died some weeks later.

Mammy Water spirits have possessed many of our female children and some of them have confessed their relationships with marine spirits.

I know a friend that the beautiful and wealthy girlfriend confessed that she was from the marine kingdom. My friend fled from her.

Mammy Water spirits are common in the littoral states in Nigeria.
