background:
i normally do not do beta OSes.
however, i had been eagerly awaiting the release of autocad 2010. during a visit to a cad bloggers webpage, i found he was running autocad 2010 (beta) on windows7. and it was running with no problems. so, i decided to get windows 7
MS has stopped providing it as an official download, but you will find the latest build, if you know ehere to look.
the most recent build apparently is 7072. the build released to the public was build 7048. i'd downloaded this via rapidshre, only to find that build 7057 was out. so i downloaded 7057.
in the interest of safety, i decided to first test it on my old Toshiba satellite. 60gb, 1.5gb ram, 1.6ghz pentium M nvidia geoforce go 6600 128mb. windows 7 installed in under 20 minutes. a great improvement over Xp - which installs in like 45+ minutes, and vista which if i recll installs within the same time frame.
the system booted fine. Aero was disabled, as my graphics driver had not been installed. so i attached my starcomms evdo usb modem. .
and met my first bug. mobilink lite installed to 90%, then rolled back. the software just would not install. it was looking as if windows 7 was not for me. . .
resolving this was not so difficult after all. . . first i disconnected the modem with safely remove hardware. the syste then reconnected it as a modem( it had been seen as a cd drive before) i had copied the drivers, which reside in mobilink lites program folder on my vista install. i loaded the drivers. i then accessed network connection, and created a new connection using my evdo modem. i used it's settings (number etal. . .and yay! it connected. apparently you don't really need the bundled software on modems to connect to the net. . .
so i used windows update, and downloaded the drivers, updats eatal. upon rebootin, aero was running. i used one of my ram monitors, and the system reported 1100 mb free , meaning a 400mb ram foot print out f the box.

so, with this success, i was ready to install windows 7 on my default pc, my precision m90. i'd recently bought some hardware, so i have a 500gb hdd, and 4gb ram
windows 7 installed in under 20 minutes, as before. as stated by MS, all my m90 vista drivers installed in windows 7 with no issues.
ram foot print was initailly around 500-600mb.
base score 5.1

lets start with the bummers
qtabbar, the explorer enhancement that enables you to run multitabbed explorer windows is broken. i have been using this since 2007. hopefully, the author Quizo, will have fixed it by the time windows 7 ships or earlier
most virtual hard drive/disk drive type software is broken
i use sandboxie with my keygens, this is supposed to ensure that any changes by my keygens to my system work in ths esandboxed virtual drive c, and not my actual hard drive. installatio caused a blue screen. apparently there's a beta version that will work on windows 7. i downloaded this installed fine, but it doesn't work whenever i attept to run sandbox i get security token error
based on blogs eatl daemon tools won't work . the only drive emulation software currently working is virtual clone drive and ultra iso. i'm usig virtual clone drive.
two other apps, preview config( which i use to set filetypes behavior in the explorer preview window. and creative element power tools also will not run, because they do not recognize windows 7. they give a wrong OS! message. actually the latest version of creative element tools runs, but no er. . .crack for it. . .
cool stuff
libraries
a new enhancement to explorer is libraries. these are like shorcut folders where you can drag folders you want to be able access quickly.
quick access to the preview window
the preview window is a really cool featue in vista. it provides previews of all sorts of files. howver, it coul only be accessed through three clicks in a drop down menu. in windows 7, you can access it via the toolbar
integrated wallpaper changer
in other versions of windows, you need a third party app to change your wall paper. not any more. windows 7 has its integrated wall paper changer under the personalize window. you can set the wallpaper change duration, create wallpaper sets , etc

the system tray:
you can now choose to hide any app in the tray. previously i did this via a third party app known as PS tray factory. now i can do it natively
you can change your desktop background from the context menu, cahnege sceen resolution from the context menu, and access your gadgets from the context menu

the new aero features
aero snap aero peek aero shake
you can minimize all windows by selecting a window and shaking it
by hovering at the edge of the taskbar, by the system tray, show the desktop
by clicking at the edge of the taskbar, by the system tray, you minimize all windows to desktop

seems they're into the Aero 3D features than ever. As per Starcomms data card, I do not know if those guys are waiting to be told to regularly update their products as technology changes. they seem to still be living in the XP era for their data card was not made for Vistas (not even to talk of 7! )

a not so old claim http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/02/16/2259257Draconian DRM Revealed In Windows 7 Re — Photoshop: That Photoshop stopped functioning after we messed with one of its nag DLLs was not so much a surprise, but what was a surprise: Noting that Win7 allows programs like Photoshop to insert themselves stealthily into your firewall exception list. Further, that the OS allows large software vendors to penetrate your machine. Even further, that that permission is responsible for disabling of a program based on a modified DLL. And then finding that the OS even after reboot has locked you out of your own Local Settings folder; has denied you permission to move or delete the modified DLL; and refuses to allow the replacement of the Local Settings folder after it is unlocked with Unlocker to move it to the Desktop for examination (where it also denies you entry to your own folder). Setting permissions to 'allow everyone' was disabled! a lot of bull , as i have a cracked CS4 installed and updated. ditto for acad 2010. in fact this was almost immediately refuted: http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/02/oh-the-humanity-windows-7s-draconian-drm.ars

Yep! The online buzz is VERY favourable towards Windows 7 and Microsoft these days. It's perhaps the most stable beta i've ever tested. Best of all, Win 7 runs perfectly on Netbooks!!

so sure MS do not wanna hear a single complaint from any one seems they're into the Aero 3D features than ever. As per Starcomms data card, I do not know if those guys are waiting to be told to regularly update their products as technology changes. they seem to still be living in the XP era for their data card was not made for Vistas (not even to talk of 7! ) You really can't blame starcomms, they do not develop the software for their data cards. So untill Aircard tm does something about drivers or come out with a new hardware, we should just look for supporting drivers, just like I have done.

its an oem card - ie it came with the laptop nvidia quadro fx 1500M, 256mb you can't upgrade video cards of older generation laptops. the newer ones can be upgraded, seems you can even upgrade the processors (this applies to high end machines tho, alienware m71, dell precision m6440, thinkpad w700) i buy all my pc hardware on ebay/amazon via my guy over there just google nvidia geoforce or ati radeon do you use a laptop or adesktop? if a desktop, you need to confirm what the motherboard is - as it may not be compatible with all video cards @ OYB & init4dmoni

Yes windows seven is great OS but surely whats the major difference between Vista and windows 7? Its still the samething to me I ve used both Vista ultimate, premium etc and also Windows 7 ultimate etc I even have the DVD collection. The bottom line its the samething underneath. Microsoft are still missing something out, they should try and increase the gap between Vista and Windows 7 just like windows 98 and Win XP everyone knew there was a real change and a total difference between 95,98 and Xp. Windows 7 is ok just like vista to me sha all the same I downgraded to XP back simply because Openvpn did not work with YF

This product, they need to do something about it, I have experience windows 7 though i love it but why is it that on its own it shout systems down without notice, I believe they have not finished the programming or whateva thats needed to be done on it, Anyways for me its cool but as a graphic man who needs more time on a design would still prefer using the former ones,
Thank you

You're using the Beta version, which was due to expire in July, and is timed to shut down repeatedly after the expiry date. That's what happens when you buy N200 software in Otigba. Download the RC 1, this is valid until march 2010.

@oyb et al,
Besides the look and feel, do you know the exact "serious"improvements microsoft made in windows 7 agianst its predecessors (vista, xp). Also i read its a lighter operating system and its tailored to the web, can u shed more light? finally, i have this feeling that windows 7 is not complete, that they removed some necessary background stuff that they feel the average user will not need (cant put my finger on it yet), hence it may not be as robust as vista or even xp.

Windows 7 is a complete OS. everything Vista should have been. not that vista was bad anyway, its was just badly programmed.
Windows 7s Kernel i.e Base code is Vistas Base code and part of XPs too. yep you are correct, it is lighter. what background stuff are yu talking abt??
