Urgent action needed on Lagos 3rd Mainland Bridge
Tuesday, September 19, 2006
The Good Governance Forum is alarmed at recent press reports that the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge may collapse anytime from now if urgent repairs were not carried out by the authorities concerned. Construction experts, according to press reports, have warned that the bridge is a structure waiting to collapse. Specifically, the experts said the bridge pavement surface had become uneven and that the pillars or piers on which the bridge rests had shifted from their original spots. The uneven pavement and displacement of the piers, we are told, were indications of more serious structural problems regarding the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge. We of the Good Governance Forum feel deeply disturbed by this development and moreso, by the seeming unconcerned attitude of the authorities and in this instance, we mean the Federal Government who owns and runs the affected bridge. We are raising this necessary alarm now in view of recent events in Lagos where several houses have collapsed and several lives and property, worth several billions of Naira have perished in the process. Given this situation, the general anguish and agony that will naturally attend such a possible collapse of the ever-busy 'national' bridge can only be imagined than experienced. We insist that the Federal authorities must move its engineers to the bridge site with immediate effect and carry out the necessary repairs to stave off any untoward calamity.
