SUNDAY, 2:00pm, oct29,2006
Watching the naija stations and as usual- they r DRAb. Tuned in 2 channelstv, am actually not paying FULL attention but here I read a caption of THE BREAKING NEWS of theADC plane crash.
We've not yet finished the rememberance of the bellview plane crash and yet again-ANOTHER CRASH!
You kno what I hate most- the newspapers are going to be full of OBITUARIES ONCE AGAIN! aargh! but yes we've got2 feel 4 'em sha and more bucks for the news guys.

HEARd sultan of Sokoto and a few members of his family were  involved,  there's no worse way 2 die than2 've your body bruised or even more worse-not found!
Important personalties are also involved, SHAME on NAIJA- we've lost our future, present and the past.
TURNED on the radio to 93.7fm @ 3.p.m  where they were talking about it and funny enough one of the analysts was my namesake! Anyway co-incidences are bound 2 happen sha.
There comes a caller from gbagada saying he 'll soon be travelling out but the presenter allays his fears saying, such shall not be his portion-AMEN O!
That reminds me of the fact that I might also be travelling very soon, me sef I dey pray make my family no mourn mi o!
The presenter says he prays such athing doesn't happen again 4 10 to 15 years. That was da same thing we said last year ttoo during bellview. B4 we could say JACK, ROBISON had already brought another plane crah of sosoliso-I felt 4 that o because we lost a lot of young ones there, before we could also say JAY_JAY, okocha told us about the plane crash I think @ kaduna. OBJ gets annoyed and calls 4 a reform and stakeholder's meeting, there and there I think the minister should 've been sacked along side with the unceremonious exit of the NAMA boss. I've never believed that man eas competent enough-I think something is also wrong with the system because in spite of d reforms and recruitment, it's still happening! maybe it's corruption AGAIN!
Our govt. has really failed us thiugh. WHile d PDP keep on emphasizing ANTI-CORRUPTION, BANKING REFORMS, NAFDAC FAKE DRUGS, GSM(like it aint d government's function) bla bla bla, I bet u've seen d KOKO advert on NTA NEWS AND CHANNELS NEWS @10.
Adulthood isn't easy 2 buy in the market and Children are also expensive 2 buy,  so says INFINITI in their song olorioko
We are losing our good people just like Bird flu was killing those chickens.Ehen, I just remembered BASKET MOUTH giving a joke that during that time , the chickens no longer had respect, they weren't afraid anymore and so they 'll just come right in front of ya, flap its wings and say "chop me now, chop me now, chop me now if u no dey fear- u go just die 1 time!"

It's been a long time alright, but it's now xmas time and after that- d eid-il-kabir.I was watching a Nigeria station(s) and so annoying again is d invasion of xmas parties etc. I REALLY don't know why these stuffs never change because d children keep on repeating "I want to wish my mum, auntie, teacher, bla bla bla a happy xmas, ", will there ever be a change?I actually saw 1 which surprised me. THERE were  2 children who should be around 9 to 11 lip-singing to 'why me' by D'banj 4M D beginning to the end,

They should sha give us a good leader because most people now use d phrase- "na this man them go giv" instead of "na this man i go vote". TALKING "bout d uefa league draws, LIVERPOOL- BARCELONA IS OBVIOUSLY D STAR MATCH. Apparently, am supporting liverpool this time. I would like to see lille defeat man u 4 d nigerian factor(osaze). OF course, no probs 4 chelsea but lyon remains a strong team. Once again d premiership has taken its usual toll- d CHELSEAS,MAN Us,Liverpools and Arsenal being d top 4.

hi there.
I travelled during the festivities and d harmattan 'ruined' my fine boi.
Men, d northerners are really trying o1! My legs were white and undeneath it was so BROWN. Infact, i had 2 wear my socks 2 cover my leg.
it's so 'fawny' that this premier league of a thing isn't so popular after all. I had so many friends who went 2 Osun,Ondo etc and they wanted 2 follow d premiership.
a guy in Osun asked where he could find a viewing centre and 2 his surprise, that was a new one 2 'em.
d guy had 2 call me consistently 4 d scores.
What 'saddened' me was that Chelsea were unable 2 capitalise on the draw man u had.
INFACT, I WENT2 an eatery 2 watch d match(man u vs newcastle) and I celebrated d draw but d blues still 4ked up.
It's so annoying when u go out of lagos,  no gprs, less electricity, no cybercafe TOO!
I dint even know sadam was dead until I saw nta.
anyway, d holidays are over and i look 4ward 2 new stuffs,

Singapore - A 21-year-old Nigerian man spent his last day of life on Thursday without the comfort of a single relative or friend ahead of his execution by hanging in a Singapore prison.

Despite a clemency plea by Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, there was no word from the government of any change in the death sentence to be carried at before dawn on Friday.

Tochi Amara Iwuchukwu, a promising footballer, was convicted of trafficking in 727 grams of heroin estimated to be worth 1.5 million Singapore dollars (970,000 US dollars). He was arrested at Changi Airport after arriving from Dubai in November 2004.

'We understand Tochi comes from a poor family in Nigeria with no one able to afford the trip to see him for the last time,' said Chee Siok Chin, one of two activists who launched a hunger strike in the rain early Thursday to protest against the execution.

Other sympathizers joined them as the group grew to 15 people determined to spend the night outside Changi Prison until the execution.

Chee said her own request to visit Tochi was denied by the prison department. 'I received a letter stipulating that such visits were only accorded to family. This is terribly sad,' she added.

Representatives of the Nigerian High Commission showed up to offer comfort. 'The commission is standing by him,' said Ucheha Eke, who has visited on several occasions.

A priest was also being sought since Tochi is Catholic.

Without any relatives to receive the body after the execution, the commission said Tochi will be cremated.

Chee and lawyer M Ravi, both Singaporeans, moved from the city-state's Speakers' Corner to the grounds outside the prison along with the other supporters. They carried gear to protect themselves in case of rain and candles to light on behalf of Tochi.

In a handwritten letter delivered to Ravi's office on Thursday, Tochi said, 'Thank you for all your efforts.' He also wished Ravi, who represented him late in the case, a 'happy new year.'

Singapore does not announce the dates of hangings in advance. A letter from the prisons department to the family informed them of the date and said they would be allowed extra visiting time during the three days prior to the execution.

Hangings in the city-state are carried out at 6 a.m.

Under standard procedures, prisoners are hand-cuffed while led to the gallows. A hood is placed over the head and a noose around the neck before the opening of a trapdoor, snapping the spinal cord.

The London-based Amnesty International called earlier for clemency, maintaining the judge who convicted the Nigerian appears to have 'accepted that he might not have realized that the substance he was carrying was heroin.'

The death penalty is mandatory in Singapore for anyone caught with more than 15 grams of the drug, and Tochi's appeal for clemency to President SR Nathan failed last year.

Also sentenced to death in the same case as Tochi is Okeke Nelson Malachy, 35, described as a stateless African. It was not clear when Malachy, on death row, would be executed.

Execution is mandated in cases of drug trafficking, murder and use of firearms, the prisons department said, adding it 'sends a strong signal to would-be offenders.'

The hunger strike was announced after Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo urged Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to stop the hanging.

In Obasanjo's plea to Lee on Tuesday, he mentioned the excellent relations between the two countries.

'I earnestly urge you to reconsider the conviction ,  and to commute the death sentence to imprisonment,' Obasanjo said.

Outside demonstrations of any kind in Singapore are prohibited without a police permit. However, people are allowed to speak without amplification equipment at Singapore's version of London's famed Speakers' Corner.

Singapore's harsh drug laws caused an outcry in Australia in December 2004 when Nguyen Tuong Van, 25, was hanged for carrying nearly 400 grams of heroin.

Amnesty claims Singapore has the highest rate of executions per capita in the world.

, rather unfortunate abi? The Nigerian is Dead as at 6.am today.
I never knew the guy was even a footballer until last week. This just goes to show how IRRESPONSIBILITY of our govt.
What on earth has our Embassy been doin since this incident occured?
Why did it take our Attorney Genetral so long that they had to react 2 days before the boy's execution?
Why is Nigeria so disorganised because if we had a GOOD league, 4 shizzle boy won't even think of SINGAPORE!, so sad

Wunmi was sentenced to 3 years or 1 milla fine 4 d same offence too!,

Lagos state has released her parallel population figures of 17.5 million which is about 8 million less of  d census result obj released!
. . . Satisfying to hear.

've tried convincing myself with analysts consoling us on this population stuff. Just couldn't imagine a mega city like Lagos 'ving a lower figure than any other state.
Agege? Oshodi? Ojo? and the rest. Someone said Lagos' residents practice family planning better than the north and the sortsdon't still believe that.
Hope u 'peoples' 've all registered? A yes I expect. I really don't know who to vote for concernin' Lagos and President but I don't think 'll vote for PDP in any case.
Seeing the posters- I really don't know which fellas help in advertising the different candidates in their posters. Why must they all smile? When I saw one of em's smile, I was afraid because the guy looked like a crook. No prejudice.
Their smiles sincerely don't depict the real situation of things in the nation.
'll still decide later on on whom to vote for.

Heard the story of a nigerian who was stabbed in da head because of some barbaric reason no one knows. To make matters 'worse', it was said that the first thing d guy said after d boo ha ha was "arsenal till I die". Neo-colonialism I would call it.
Don't understand why the black man's mind has been 'blackened', wonders shall one day cease

Finally the CBN plans to introduce the new currency notes and coins into the system; I wait to see how its going to fit in2 d system. Will prices generally come down to suit the coins or are bus fares going to reduce or . . .? The coins and da new notes look ‘lovely’ but I doubt if Nigerians ‘ll be able 2 preserve d ‘pretty’ look after 3 months. I’m just wondering what two naira ‘ll do. The 50 kobo still makes some little sense considering the fact that 7.50k * 2= 15naira!
   .  .  . I wait to see how d ECONOMY is goin’ to change . . .
Still on the “preserve d ‘lovely’ look” issue, the metro buses that are to commence operations late February in Lagos should generate some sanity in the transportation system in the state. Akin to developed countries, public transportation should be a pleasure to board ‘because over there, not e’body likes the boo-ha-ha of driving. Most drivers in the state are not meant to be Licensed because we all don’t obey simple traffic rules; some us don’t even know what some traffic signs stand for. It’s so appalling the way danfo drivers move in Lagos. When you are in their buses, you keep on praying to HIM because at times, those guys are usually high Reminiscent of what I wrote earlier, “I doubt if Nigerians ‘ll be able 2 preserve d ‘pretty’ look after 3 months” because similar stuffs ‘ve been introduced twice during this administration of Tinubu. Lagosians can’t change- before you know it, a bus that should accommodate 20 passengers suddenly becomes “29 siiting; 99 standing!”.
Finally, I’ve decided to vote for Jimi Agbaje. I think the guy is smart, he has a good academic certificate (and not the Toronto certificate) and he brings himself down to earth- as in there’s not this clout over him that makes you wan to doubt him. I think it would’ve been better if Action Congress Party had adopted him rather than the other guy who proudly supports Man You- can you imagine? He didn’t even think of supporting a Lagos or Nigerian football club rather, it’s a former colonialist’s club. Am not saying it’s not bad to do that but he’s gotta consider that he’s running for a political post that has gotta do with sentiments and concern for your people. I wonder what would happen to we the non-Manchester United supporters if he wins. Anyway, eko o ni baje-Amin

   So I saw the CNN report on the Niger Delta some days back and whether the re na lie or not, our ‘great nation’ was once again put to shame by the only nation that never minds her business-US.A. Africa’s Largest network (NTA) as she calls herself has never taken time to put together a documentary on the area, rather it’s a foreign station miles away distant from Nigeria that came to find the problems bombarding the area! CNN was probably jobless at the time and they just said to themselves ”let’s go on some adventure to the Niger Delta!”. Haba, our Min. of Information was trying to defend the Proudly Nigerian state and he defended that d militants on the screen were hired (He should have proven it to shame them, abi?). Doesn’t it add more insult to injury that our future leaders will be passionate to be part of the CNN ‘movie crew’? It does goes to show the height of joblessness in the nation and it reminds me of what Basket-mouth once said about foreign correspondents and Nigerian reporters whereby the foreigners defy all odds to air a breaking news but NTA won’t even bother themselves with all those Wahala;
“.   .  .Here’s so and so place after the so and so incident occurred . . .” It doesn’t appear funny ‘ere but the way Basket-mouth presented it was comical.
Sincerely, I saw a documentary on the area some few years back on AIT (and not the big NTA) and I couldn’t resisting shedding some tears ‘because I couldn’t believe that an area in Nigeria could be as backward as that in the 21st century! You need to have seen the water the people there drink; it looked like Groundnut oil. Companies flare gas, there are hardly roads and the place is simply deplorable in summary. After watching the documentary, I dint know whether the Foreign oil companies are to blame or the Governments in the \area for corruption. Some of the companies there are wicked ‘because instead of constructing motorable roads, they’ll just construct a makeshift kind of bridge for their vehicles to cross over. But when one also considers the embezzlement of funds by an indigene of that area and someone who is/was highly respected (alamieyeseigha or whatever), one begins to wonder which side is to blame- d oil companies or the government. …PROUDLY NIGERIAN!

Right now as am typing, I’m watching a John Legend video and d guy is just fantastic! He’s my favorite musician ever and d guy is plainly extraordinary. Listening to his music gives me INSPIRATION and I recall his music gave me the desired recuperation when I was ‘hospitalized’ last year. His lyrics are less ‘parental advisory- explicit content’ and until now; I never knew he was behind Alicia Keys’ “ain’t got you ” and most of Kanye West, JayZ, and Mary J. Blige etc. By the way, she (Alicia Keys) ’s also my darling female artiste . . . two of a kind right?
I pray he comes to Nigeria in the nearest future and I bet I’ll do ‘anything’ to get a ticket regardless of the amount.
 Remember,

                                             ”We just ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow . . .”

.  .  . so am just going to take it slow at this moment because my fingers needs some respite at this moment- BODY NO BE WOOD!

Am still anticipating the match between Chelsea and Porto. For the 1st time, I’m reading another person’s journal (apart from “ME, Myself & Moi”); “in the cyber café” by otoks. I think this is one 9ralander that’s got some problems with the Government. Anyway, am just happy that others in this forum are bothered about the Nigeria condition.
I’ve devised another ‘means’ of updating my journal and I wonder why I never thought of this before. I think it’s ‘because of my mobile phone which I constantly use (d) to surf. But, Celtel seems to be making our lives ’worse’ ‘because I don't know why they stopped their Internet connection without notifying the public or When did customers become serfs instead of Kings? My sis said they sent her a message that Internet ‘ll now be “pay as you browse” but I never received such text. Anyway what I now do is to write on my system, transfer it into my USB flash-drive then upload the writings on the net. For every problem, there’s a solution! Our Starcomms Internet connection has not commenced so that leaves me with no alternative but to visit a Cyber. That’s the way I could read the “in the cyber café” by otoks because I’ve never had the time to read people’s stuff when my time and of course, money is going!

Aha, Just saw Adedibu and Ladoja in the news, both smiling and saying their issue is a family affair. Family affair? Hmmnn, Na real wah!
Am watching the Chelsea versus Porto game and about 13 minutes into the match, my heart skipped\d for a millisecond- the Porto guys ‘ve scored! Anytime it’s gotta do with Champions League and we concede a goal, am always feeling worried.
!!!! Rude boys they are. NEPA (or whatever the devil calls them) have cut power supply again. So, I used the opportunity of blackout to observe my prayers and while praying, the generator is switched on. Rushed my prayers a bit- God; please!
Afterwards, I switch on the television set and am gladdened with the score line I see. Chelsea1-1 Porto and it’s d “30 million-30 waste” as our anti-Chelsea people call him that has scored. Oops! It’s such a sorry sight to see John Terry suffer another injury. The Porto guys are playing well and that Quaresma guy is really pestering us. Shevy; Jersey No. 16; 16th minute.
So the match ended a goal appease and from an observer’s point of view, Chelsea managed the game well (considering the fact that our influential captain and defender J.Terry got injured) and with an away goal it’s all the better for us.

Chelsea1-Porto1 Chelsea1-Porto1 Chelsea1-Porto1 Chelsea1-Porto1 Chelsea1-Porto1

A new nairalander I guess (going by the number of posts) wanted opinions on the Census issue. I guess he doesn’t know d rules of the JOURNALS section. Anyaway, I wouldn’t like to really bore to death my column with excerpts but given that I read this feature on THE TELL 2 days ago, I just felt I should put it ‘ere:

Census Officials
Armed with a projector, a thorough grasp of demographic variables and statistical data from local and international sources, he held his audience spellbound for about three hours. By the time Olufemi Hamzat, commissioner for science and technology in Lagos State, was done, the enthusiastic crowd of stakeholders at the Shell Hall, MUSON Centre, Lagos, last Monday, erupted in a thunderous applause. Hamzat, a former lecturer, had just taken his audience through an analytical trip of what the state government considers the real demographic status of Lagos State. And his conclusion was that with the recently released figures by the National Population Commission, NPC, the number of residents in the state was grossly under-counted.  After the presentation of a book, Errors, Miscalculations and Omissions: The Falsification of Lagos Census Figures, the submission of Hamzat was that the provisional figures allocated to the Centre of Excellence defy universal demographic parameters.
Obviously impressed by the brilliant presentation, Bola Tinubu governor of Lagos State, had to discard a prepared speech he had wanted to read and spoke extempore. He asked: “What else do we need to say to convince enemies of progress to do what is patriotic and just?” A visibly livid Tinubu, who threw jibes at the NPC over the provisional figures which put Nigeria’s population at 140 million, insisted that available figures showed that no fewer than 17,552,924 people reside in Lagos, regretting that the nation had just emerged from “yet another barren exercise”. The governor, therefore, challenged President Olusegun Obasanjo to demonstrate sincerity in the fight against corruption by ordering a recount of his state.
A breakdown of the figures released by the state, which was a product of its own parallel census exercise done simultaneously with that of the NPC, showed that no fewer than 9,115,041 males and 8,437,901 females live in Lagos.  One of the arguments relied upon by the state was the data of immunised children in the state which was sanctified by the Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation, WHO. Between 2004 and 2006, an average of 3,238,973 children of 0-5 years of age were immunised with polio vaccines in the state. This, therefore, means that Lagos State would have a figure of no less than 16 million going by the United Nations’ yardstick that age bracket constitutes roughly 20 per cent of any population.  Also hard to dispute is the result of satellite imaging done last year by the World Bank in collaboration with the Lagos State Office of Statistics which showed that there are identifiable 4,750,000 houses in the state, of which 3.15 million are residential. Based on the report, the average household size for the state is six, leaving no fewer than 18.90 million people for the state if the average household size is extrapolated with the number of residential houses. For these glaring anomalies, the state government said it would bring in international and independent experts to corroborate its findings, after which it would head for the census tribunal.

. . . if it bores you, I think you can stop ‘ere but if you are really interested, you can go on

Despite the raging controversy, Musiliu Obanikoro, gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, believes the hoopla is unnecessary. The governorship hopeful said rather than condemning the results, Lagosians who usually flee Lagos in droves for their native states whenever a census exercise is to take place, deserve to be reprimanded. That may amount to  mixing politics with census matters.
In fact, it is not only Tinubu that has an axe to grind with the figures released by  the Samu’ila Makama-led NPC. Denouncing the figures last Tuesday, Nasir el-Rufai, minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, said his administration found the figure of 1,405,201 posted for the FCT unacceptable.  His reason was that the figure failed to reflect its true population. He added that prior to the 2006 census, the FCT had been estimated to have over six million people, vowing that he would contest the figures at the census tribunal. El-Rufai, a favourite of the President, said his defence of the interest of the FCT is a duty that should not be buried in any kind of affiliation. Social and political  groups, particularly in the South, are also shouting  blue murder. In a furious manner, Ohaneze Ndigbo, a pan-Igbo cultural organisation, described the figures as a fraudulent exercise, threatening to contest it at the tribunal. “Ndigbo used experts, demographers and geographers to look at the figures we have had before, and the facts and figures on the ground. And they have concluded that the population allocated to the South-east cannot be a proper reflection of their number, that they have been short-changed. We do not accept it. It is very much doctored and tailored and we reject it”, Dozie Ikedife, president of a faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, protested. There were equally strident calls by the Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political group, urging the National Assembly to pass a resolution that the figures be put on hold until after the April polls so that its fallout would not be exploited to actualise tenure elongation for public office holders. While rejecting the result, Yinka Odumakin, national publicity secretary of the group, said the exercise was a well-managed and manipulated demography venture to justify the call for proper restructuring.
Odumakin struck a chord there though he may not have known how the manipulation came about. The magazine learnt that the problem was really not with the census exercise. Whatever initiated the controversy may have been done after the results were computed and some people felt uncomfortable with it. A senior government source said the actual figure that originally came out of the census is almost twice the figure released - about 250 million. When the yet-to-be-released results reached Obasanjo, he reportedly gleefully danced, excited that his administration would score a golden goal by recording the true figures of Nigerians. But that excitement reportedly changed to despondency shortly before the figures were released. A Presidency source said it was a disillusioned Obasanjo who suddenly caved in to surreptitious threats from established Northern interests who warned of a fury that would ultimately consume the nation should the result be published “unedited”. The subtle blackmail is reportedly informed by fears that the North would be prone to further impoverishment and possible future annihilation in the Nigerian state if population advantage, which is a veritable index of revenue allocation, is withdrawn. Having relinquished power to the South since 1999, they argued that they had not got the President to do things the way they wanted. Thus, some of the elite in the North successfully boxed Obasanjo into a corner. But beyond this, the President was wary of some damning security reports said to have painted a gloomy picture of a violent reaction that may greet the release of the true figures said to have put the population of the North at about 40 per cent as against 60 per cent for the South. In a way, the threat was a subtle blackmail for a President who, in spite of posturing, does not want to confirm the bourgeoning speculations that he intended to engineer a crisis to prolong his stay in office.
But by merely succumbing to pressures, Obasanjo may have, wittingly or unwittingly, missed the golden opportunity to cross the census Rubicon once and for all, thus leaving Nigeria to continue to grope in the dark as to how many are her citizens. Therefore, despite the use of technology and the painstaking efforts deployed into the six-day exercise which gulped billions of taxpayers’ money, the arm-twisting has lumped the provisional results with previous ones that were hotly contested.
That was a census exercise that held much hope of accuracy, judging by the pledges of Makama that the nation would get it right this time. To quell primordial acrimonies and etch the nation on a sound progress compass, issues relating to ethnicity and religion were struck out. Also, initial threats like logistic problems forced the hands of the commission to shift the exercise which was billed to hold in 2005 to 2006.  Yet, the product of such a painstaking exercise has continued to attract condemnations from informed quarters. Aligning himself with the position of statisticians who had picked holes in the state-by-state figures, Ajibola Ogunsola, chairman, The Punch Nigeria Limited, publishers of The PUNCH newspapers, said he was yet to fathom how NPC arrived at the controversial figures. The renowned actuarist, who spoke during the stakeholders’ meeting organised last week by the Lagos State government, wondered how meaningful economic planning could take place without an accurate census data. This may have informed the view of Elias Wahab, a demographer and lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Lagos State University, LASU, who cautioned that the implications of an under-reported census are legion.
Apart from being a bad precedent that may adversely affect people’s disposition to such an exercise in the future, Wahab said that the governed would be worse for it if government programmes are based on faulty figures. But, according to Kunle Ogundele, lecturer at the Department of Geography and Regional Planning, LASU, there may also be some political undertones to the census imbroglio. He says that the effect of an understated figure for a mega city like Lagos is that the usual development grants from international bodies may have to be withdrawn.  In other words, Lagos may have drawn the envy of some people in this regard being the only state in Nigeria categorised as a mega city, adding that the pressure on infrastructure and environment would be catastrophic. Wahab, however, called for restraint, saying that critics should wait till March when the figures will have been broken down by the NPC for better comprehension.
But it is most unlikely that a breakdown would assuage the feelings of those who hold strong views that their states were under-counted.
Interestingly, census exercise in this country is not a stranger to controversies, with each attempt following the beaten path of the past and reopening of old myths - North and South agitations. Shortly before the results of 1991 census were made public, Augustus Aikhomu, then military vice president, had warned that the nation would be shocked when the figures were eventually announced. Receiving the results, which put the country’s nation population at 88 million, from Shehu Musa, then NPC chairman, Ibrahim Babangida, then military president, in a rare moment of candour, admitted that the 1963 census figures on which the nation had premised its planning were more of negotiations than enumeration. Perhaps, that spirit of negotiation was also employed in the recent exercise to placate some power bloc. But the multimillion-naira 1991 exercise, which Arthur Nwankwo, author and publisher, described as a “scientific fraud”, was also engulfed in the flame of rejections and controversies. During the controversial 1963 census, when the nation was said to be 55.6 million, the North was 29.8 million while the South was 25 million. Then came that of 1973 which was touted to be the most alarming census figures in the nation’s chequered history. Out of 79.7 million, the North was recorded to have 51.3 while the South was awarded 28.4 million. What that meant was that the South had added only 3.4 million people in 10 years. The reaction was alarming. Unsure of the public tantrums the results could generate, Yakubu Gowon, then military head of state, tarried in releasing the results until he was swept away in a palace coup.
Like in the previous rancorous census exercises, the 2006 figures fly in the face of universal demographic realities. Around the world, population cluster generally tends to be heavier along the coastal areas than in the arid regions. But curiously, the nation’s census experience has always remained an aberration. The northern part of the country has consistently posted more population figures than the South. Out of the 88,992,166 in the 1991 census, the North had 47,369,237, representing 53.40 per cent. In the latest exercise, the North has led  again with 75,025,166, which represents about 53.59 per cent. Given the dying trans-Sahara trade and increasing influx of businesses like telecommunications towards the South, it is expected that settlement pattern would tend to follow established order as it is in countries like Australia and Canada where population and economic propensities tilt more toward coastal areas. But it has also been argued that the vast landmass of the North is what makes it difficult to appreciate the volume of its people. Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State and Datti Ahmed, leader of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, have also argued that the controversy over which section of the country is more populous is needless. They attributed the rapid increment in the population of the North to polygamy and high fertility since family planning is a rarity in the Muslim-dominated North. This, therefore, means that the population edge of the North would be there for a long time to come. One thing that further underscores the difficulty in reversing the trend is the national identity card programme which was eventually cancelled despite the determination Obasanjo had mustered to pull it through.
Against global trend, male population in Nigeria has often outnumbered that of the female. For example, for every 101 males in the 1991 census, there were 100 females. But in the 2006 figures, however, the ratio has moved up to 105 males to 100 females. One person who found this phenomenon curious is Lateef Adegbite, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and secretary-general, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. According to him, it is a common thing worldwide that women are more than men in any population. Indeed, it was Lagos that typifies the undercounting of the South. The population of Kano is put at 9,383,682 while that of Lagos is 9,013,534, retaining the supremacy it recorded in the 1991 census. This is despite the fact that Jigawa, which now has 4,348,649 was carved out of the old Kano. Going by the new figures, the population of the old Kano is 13,725,116. Makama said in a recent radio programme that the surging crowd in Lagos was not a necessary and sufficient factor to determine the population of the state. According to him, majority of those who work in Lagos actually live in neighbouring Ogun State. They may, therefore, have been counted in Ogun State. But a senior official in Ogun State laughed at Makama’s logic, saying, “That has not reflected in the figures allocated to us”. Ogun State, which had a total of 2,338,570 people in the 1991 census, is now allocated 3,728,098.
But Olapade Agoro, national chairman, Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, may have hit the nail on the head by saying the figures are nothing but “census for revenue allocation”. Said he: “It now shows that no part of this country can be called a fool (anymore) because the clever ones have been caught with their tricks. Census in this country is not done because of the need to know how many we are, but as a means to get money from the federation purse”.

, hope y'all learnt somethin'

In fact, I can’t discern why the GLOBAL WARMING word has come ‘in contact’ with me.
First, I saw the movie THE DAY AFTER TOMMOROW (which was about global warming) again.
Secondly, the weather is so HOT. Perhaps, it’s the global warming ‘trend’ and If you ain’t got an air conditioner or worse still, if PHCN didn’t supply power to your house then that’s exceedingly HOT!
Thirdly, I bought the SATURDAY PUNCH NEWSAPER and there’s an article (A [i]flare[\i] of hypocrisy) on GLOBAL WARMING! Indeed the parting words of the columnist was what touched me
“In Nigeria, gas flaring by oil firms hurts the economy by preventing fruitful agricultural activities around flare sites for hundreds of yards and hampering crop growth. The health of the people in the local communities is also endangered. It’s a clear case of flagrant abuse of the human rights of hundreds of Niger Delta people.
It’s been so much of hypocrisy in tackling climate change, gas flaring and related matters, but little in the way of genuine efforts to educate the populace and mobilize for collective action. Until the attitude changes, you might as well think this piece was nothing but a rather technical scientific misadventure.”
If you don’t read the PUNCH, I really think y’all should read that article ‘because this PROUDLY NIGERIAN STATE is at a very GREAT RISK concerning this trend.

Went to the Lagos State University College of Medicine(LASUCOM) to see a relation. So I passed via the Emergency Unit and saw some touts with a ’danfo’ bus parked beside the place and I must say touting ain’t pay. They threaten themselves, fight themselves and the same people take themselves to the Hospital after fighting for trivial causes.
“ko gbodo ku o!” says one of them meaning he mustn’t die. “tori awon people wa n strike” because the doctors are on strike. May the lord ‘helep’ us. Father has told me I’d better not get sick and I support the doctors because their working conditions are appalling. Lots of brain drain, absence of equipments etc and government says they’ve given us dividends of democracy. I’m quite impressed with the Lagos State Government ‘because the hospital there is something we can write about and that brings me to the fact that the political rallies we ‘ve don’t discuss the issue of health or what’s the quintessence of rallies?
The rallies ‘ve seen so far ‘ve no ‘taste’. Unlike the US counterparts we tend to turn to every time, where u see candidates speak and u get motivated. In Nigeria, the situation is poles apart, the people (electorates) can’t ask questions rather the rallies are all about eulogizing the party’s candidates or condemning what   the incumbent government has failed to do or carrying brooms to beat themselves or some gobbledygook . . .

The new naira notes ‘ve officially become legal tender(s). I’ve not yet come in contact with them. The CBN gives us 3 months to substitute old notes for new notes at banks. I definitely won’t do that because of some little denominations. The CBN says u can go to any bank irrespective of whether you are a customer or not but you know the Nigerian system; Preferences are always set forth (if you know what I mean) and dint they consider armed robbers and the security palaver?

Saw the advert of THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND and I must definitely watch that at the cinemas. Although ‘ve not seen the preview on the BOX OFFICE but am sure the movie is undeniably tight.
I begin to wonder; why is it that most white and black collaborations have to do with blood, evil deeds and all the horrific stuffs? It’s a shame on Africa, especially nollywood because the Hollywood guys do not ‘ve stories to act on again but alas, Africa has gotta Goldmine of stories. So, who makes the profit Africa or Hollywood? They are yet again ‘exploiting’ us. The nollywood has just been a dud ‘because they all don’t tap the resources we’ve ere in Africa instead they ironically prefer to act their movies in Yankee, Jand, Germany, France and even Bosnia!
Today is the CAF AWARDS and if Drogba (forget being a Drogbamaniac) doesn’t get crowned, this ‘ll be another flop by the CAF. Eto didn’t deserve it in 2004 when Okocha ought to have gotten it and I would be disappointed if they (Caf) become unpredictable this year.
Long live Oba Drogba  the First! Cheesy

Those Porto guys still pulled the trigger but overall the so-called pensioners - Sheva and Ballack are the players that have secured our quarterfinal qualification over the 2 legs. The second goal was fantastic.
It was exciting to see a Mikel Obi play his own game because previously; he had always played like a Schoolboy. I still have this feeling that this is our year!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a minute ago, I saw on the news-
BREAKING NEWS
Yar adua ALIVE
Live from Mainz

Honestly when I saw the caption; BREAKING NEWS Yar adua. .  I thought it was BREAKING NEWS Yar adua Dead!
Anyway thank goodness for his life.

AIT (my best Naija station as far as news is concerned) interviewed his (Yar Adua's) wife and damn the hell; she needs to improve on her English unless she was tensed at the time of the interview because she has gotta become conscious of the fact that she 'll be the 1st lady of Nigeria should her spouse win the elections.
Y'ALL needed to have seen the PDP rally as Obasanjo took over the job of Yar'Adua at the Presidential rally at Abeokuta. That wasn't enough to cool the tempers of the 'teeming supporters'. When Yar'Adua called, there were cheers all over the place and Obasanjo put the phone on the microphone and a conversation ensued.
Baba had just shot himself in the foot if he didn't realize that. If He wants Yar'Adua to consolidate on his '8 years achievements' as President isn't it ironical that his government couldn't provide A HOSPITAL TO TREAT Yar'Adua? Haba, Doctors in the country went on a work-to-rule (or was it warning strike?) some days back and this just goes to show how insincere the Nigerian government is.  The PDP has cleVerly coined in the slogan POWER TO THE PEOPLE again. Prior to 2007 they were so overwhelmed with power that they just made it 'PDP; POWER!'. Now that they've realised that the electorates 'll 'decide' who wins power, people 've been prioritised in their agenda.
A PRESIDENTIAL RALLY WITHOUT THE PRESENDENTIAL CANDIDATE!!!
A PRESNDENTIL RALLY WITHOUT THE VICE PRESIDENT
OBJ hasstarted teaching Goodluck how to 'survive' without his counterpart just the way he (OBJ)  is currently 'surviving' without his counterpart; Atiku (chuckles)
All the same I don't feel comfy seeing Dora Akunyili at the PDP rallies.

The most irritating of all irritants was the news by PHCN or NEPA or HOME APPLIANCES DESTROYERS or whatever they are called that there would be interrupted power supply for about 2 months! They are so proud to give excuses for this situation and they are apologizing to NIGERIANS (which we know is insincere because there has always been epileptic power supply in the nation). The PDP has cleVerly coined in the slogan POWER TO THE PEOPLE again. Prior to 2007 they were so overwhelmed with power that they just made it 'PDP; POWER!'. Now that they've realised that the electorates 'll 'decide' who wins power, people 've been prioritised in their agenda

the 2O NAIRA POLYMER NOTE I THINK WAS SPECIFICALLY MADE THE MOST DURABLE OF THE NOTES JUST BECAUSE OF THE POLICEMEN OR WHAT DO YOU THINK. THE PARTICULAR DENOMINATION HAS CAUSED SO MANY DEATHS AND SUFFERED ENORMOUS ABUSE BY THE BAD EGGS IN THE POLICE FORCE.  THE CONDUCTORS WILLL BE SO HAPPY GIVING THEM THE COINS AS 'EGUNJE' (which is wrong) and the BEGGARS - YES. One doesn't need to be a scrooge as we can give them some coins afterall, little drops of coins makes a mighty BANK!

Y'ALL SHOULD HAVE A NICE WEEKEND AND IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS DURING A WEEKDAY; HAVE A NICE WEEK!!!
