The Good news though is that we have at least 2 new underwater cables on their way to Nigeria Main1 and Globacom and this will drastically change the Internet and connectivity game in the country as there will be more players in the market. Then and only then can we start our journey to cheap and fast internet connectivity in Nigeria.
this absolutely correct my frnd,
yes its confirmed once , main1 and globacom is launched , the internet thing will be solved.
yes ISP's in nigeria are OK, but all get the same INTERNET , so it boils down into one thing thats service,
i guess DOPC, cobranet, swift , all are same , but it depends upon the people u dealing with, my company has two off these service provider, and service both are gud,
anyway , cheers and lets wait for the fibre, will be the happy one to welcome them in nigeria.

The prices being quoted on this thread for fast and reliable internet connection in Nigeria are too high for comfort. Those companies are rip-offs. They need to bring down their prices and make it available for the average Nigerian to use. In Britain, Virgin Media is making internet services available at good prices. All the telecoms companies in Europe are offering good bargains for internet usage. I know the companies in Nigeria have to cope with the lack of electric power, but their prices should be scaled down.

Hey guys, i do believe that it is something to look forward to in Nigeria. I do remember those days we had NITEL in full operation and we had to keep our "phone receivers" up for minutes just to get a dialing tone, we really have come a long way, Now look at us enjoying some 120KB/s internet connection speed. I do believe that sometime soon, we will enjoy MEGAFAST internet connection, but hey, the word is relative, so for some, its just ok right now, and for some others, it will never be "fast" enough.

but we also have the foundation. the problem is that we are not using it well. this is my point.
nitel had the chance to atleast provide nigeria with at least 700kbps per home.
if we had that kind of consistent speeds, we wouldnt be having this kind of conversation.
as a matter of fact, i think the topic would be HOW CAN NIGERIA GET 10mbps.

@ poster :i really appreciate this topic cos it has informed some of us that our country is taking a positive step to alleviate the suffering we use to encounter then when trying to check nd send mails. lets just pray that nija factor does not come in so as to fully complete the aforementioned project.

@ moonraker I will have to agree with you there, we do have more capacity than what we are using right now. we just need better management Hopefully we will get there at a faster pace than we are going now. slowly but surely

There are a lot of fast internet stuff in nigeria.i personally use SWIFT NETWORK and i watch all live matches using the internet.i have 750kbs on my account and i pay N8400monthly, i can boldly say that the SWIFT service is the same with SKY internet in UK because i used SKY while i was in the UK and i must confess that nigeria has come of age in terms of internet services, just that the cost might still be a little bit prohibitive,

man that news of them cablng nigeria would be cool, but have you guys stopped and though of how they are gonna power thier equipments? thats here the cost goes up,I would also state here that even in the Uk, we have only two wired internet network, one is BT and the other is Virgin media, everyone else everyone buys and put thier Macers on thier cable, and its only Virgin Media who has %100 fiberotic cable, Bt are replacing thiers, so if we can have that running in Nigeria say next year, then thas wow.

thats what i have been trying to say. this problem is not just with whether
or not we have the cables. its generally difficult doing business in nigeria.
how can we expect an invest billions of naria into something that has k-leg??
Richard brason is secretly regreting for investing in nigeria but i must say he was
bold to even try,

once globalcom completes the undersea cables from the UK, watch internet prices fall, phones charges dropping, what Nigeria uses is satellite based internet connection or basicaly buying bandwidth from 3rd or even 4th party suppliers
Globalcom will probably corner the market once this project goes live, many ISP will have to buy bandwidth from them, should happen quite soon please, when is this happening?I heard such things when they said that by the time Nigeria puts up a satelite, then the mobile phone tarifs will go down. who sai? Its still very dear. and which century will they finish laying the cables? Also, Please for those of you paying for overseas internet, is it really as fast?and EXACTLY how much are you paying? thanks guys

It is cos we make so much of a big deal out of nothing.
I presently reside in the Uk and the way it works is all the major Telco companies have fiber juction piont at every location so before a house is fully completed they have there fiber link all d way to the door step. so they dont make a big deal of fiber cables cos they fastest terrestrial connection media.
But in 9ja its the reverse cos issues like that are not well planned.
i hope am making sense.

While 3g datacards are nice and convenient, they were never meant as a substitute for a hard-wired broadband connection. The data rates and latency are not even comparable. @op, I was also disappointed in connection speed when I visited Naija. It was downright awful. I went to cybercafes, universities, and other businesses, and I almost wanted to gouge my eyes out waiting for pages to load. The mtn 3.5g connection was alright but somewhat expensive. I will guess the problem is infrastructure. Optical fibre cable capable of enabling high data transfer rates is needed.

im using starcomms evdo and the latency gets as low as 198ms(neva above 300ms) also the upload gets up to 550kbps(avg 400kbps) which is ok for any upolading weda its online gaming or emails and the download hardly goes below 350kbps as for now dats as good as it gets and cuz i pay for the 250hrs it like payig N5000 per month as long as you keep it for three months. ofcourse yo have to be in a good location (i'm in lekki) this is a screen shot of a normal speed test taken as i was post this
