The issues here are mere chalenges and more of ignorance. How come the Enyimba stadium at Aba if filled to capacity by fee paying fans every sunday. families also bring their children and no one has been stoned to death. At the heartland stadium the place is jam packed every home game. Kano pillars stadium too has good crowd. I think we have all been brain washed that European style of football is better. Watch our super Eagles over the years we play a brand of soccer uniquely Nigerian. That is what you see at our local league. Yes there are some chalenges in respect of Television coverage and standard of the pitches. This are gradually being resolved by the massive upgrade going on across the country in readiness for the under 17 world championship. I think most of us are listening to all those arm chair journalist and Radio presenters who have never gone to watch a local league match but are authorities at anlysing nonesense. www.arenasignages.com]Visit www.arenasignages.com[/url] or www.sharks-fc.com to see that a lot is being done Was it not the same Enyimba stadium that a referee was beten almost to the point of death by their fans because he awarded Heartland a last minute penalty? The issue is not about the Super Eagles/National teams. It's about the clowns that run our game. And as long as they remain,Nigerian league will not recieve the patronage we all desire. Apart from Enyimba and a few others,I don't knw of any other team who has its own stadium.most of the teams are Government funded, and not privately run.how then, given that we see the lack of maintenance culture from those in charge,do we expect the league t run as say,England, when governemnt has its men running the game?

We are all entitled to our own opinion irrespective of any victimization from anybody. In actual sense, the Nigerian league is an eyesore and some drastic measures need to be taken if it were to redeemed the old glory associate with the league. Apart from the poor standard of the pitch, incompetent officiating, crap facilities, shit quality players, technically deficient management system as mentioned by one fellow nairalander, you dont get all the excitement you always see while watching EPL, Bundesliga, Seria A, Spanish liga etc. I have the opportunity of watching a match in Onikan,Lagos and the match was between Julius Berger and a team from the East (i forgot the name),the match stand at a goaless draw as at 88 minutes of play and an infringement occured at the center field, behold and lo,the referee took the ball walk down to the visiting team box and placed the ball at the penalty spot, there was pandemonium and the visitng team demend to know the exact problem coz from all indication a foul was committed in the center field and not in the box,the referee could not give any tangible reason for the penalty to be taken, After much disturbances and protest, the penalty was eventually taken and it was a goal and from that day i vowed not to watch any Nigeria league again. Even to make matter worse,if you asked any child on the street to tell you his best club or best player, dont be surprised they will mention foreign players and clubs and that is to tell you that even the so called future of this country seem to realise football has failed in the country and something needs to be done fast to salvage it.

@OP One thing u should know is that more males than females watch football, and majority males get excitement out of the unpredictable, the nigerian league is 1. Predictable, home side wins, worst scenario is a draw 2. Since the players know that no matter how they play they will still win the zeal to win which brings in the excitement is not there. 3. If a player like Messi plays in the Nigerian League, he won't perform upto 65% of what is seen presently, reason - show too much your leg will be broken and no foul will be awarded against the homeside. How do you expect him to be at his best at away games?
Also, there was this match between Dolphins and a Northern side that ended in controversy, i was not at the venue, but on Telly, the match was very clear until at the point where the controversy happened the screen went blank, and what appeared next was players standing with the visiting team protesting.
Make the league better and people will watch, even the EPL teams that don't perform well lose viewers apart from their die hard regular fans who never miss any match no matter what

nzube, i do agree wit most of wat this cats are saying, al the refeeering and stuff, they are not far from the truth, even the television cameras dont help matters, but for me i have grown with all this issues and still love the nigerian league, i go to the stadiums as much as i can if work will allow me, three weeks ago i saw juth vs fc abuja, i have been to virtual all the stadia around, we have fantastic players but the system doesnt allow them to thrive, i will never allow the issues bedevilling our game to make me stop watching our league, i have been around since the days of edema fuludu, edema benson, clifford chukwuma, joe ashinze, tony nwigwe, dan abdullahi to the era of olumide harris, sylvester oparanozie, to the times of orok akarandut, johnah abutu, john aondonga, obinna nwokolo of the 2008's, i ove football no matter where and how it is played, pls if u want to yarn or discuss more mail me andy123ng@yahoo.com

this is one problem i have with nairalanders, a thread is posted instead of making use of the opportunity to profer a reasonable solution, they start by comdenming the idea; support Arsenal, Chelsea, Manu, Liverpool, home is home; no matter how much we condenm our league no white man can come to change it for us; we should not act like our league managers who don't think of how to solve the problem but create more problems. we should be constructive thinkers; I know a lot needs to be done like the area of bad pitches, security, coverage.
bad pitches - maybe the managers of these club sides lack ideas or they don't just want to change the poor state of our league; I visited the Teslim Balogun Stadium (TBS) in Lagos to see the workers working on the atificial turf, and I can tell that you don't need rocket science to get a standard pitch for quality football; the artificial turf at the TBS Surulere is FIFA standard and I kow for a fact that such turf can last for up to 15 years; how much does it cost, its not like if our state government can't afford to make available the amount needed, but ideas is what their manager don't have. You don't need to wet the turf to make it green, it will remain the same as long as nobody use the venue for political rallies or church crusade.
Security - once we have the turf meeting the standard, the next area we should focus on is the security on match day - do a finding on the number of the men needed, then the league managers should setup a committee that will approve security bodies; because we have so many security outfit in the country all the clubs and the committee needs to do is invite them, once they can provide the required manpower needed at every match day and ensure that they submit their own report, apart from providing adequate security for everyone visiting the stadium. An estimate should be made known, so that clubs will pay security firm prior to the commencement of the league, in order to avoid any problem concerning payment while the league is on; I will suggest 200 men and 50 police officers.
Coverage - we have to wait and see what DAARSAT will do during the World Cup or in order to have a strong coverage; part of the sponsorship money should be used to purchase mini state-of-art Outside Broadcast equipment Van (OB-Van) that will be stationed stadium and ensure that at least each van is equiped with nothing less than 12 cameras; get expart to man them. HD is the in thing now, so let the equipment be HD so that nobody will say the picture quality is not up to standard. Every match will be recorded and available for live broadcast, so that any authorised station that want to show live match will just connect; the league body is called NFL, so who says the body cannot setup a station called Nigeria League TV of NFL-TV. existing contract stands; all the network needs to do is link up with the OB-Van and show the matches; we can put matches at different times; the commentators; we can call for audition in every state where we have premier league teams pick the best 2 per venue ( creating jobs) and in total 40 commentators (no noise pls, we can pay them); since the trend is the English league, we can get seasoned english commentators to assist in training them. our own Ekoku is one of them we can invite him so that he can provide support and training for them for like 3 month or more prior to the commencement of the league, once all this done then we should be ready to stage a good league every season; with little effort we will get there. When the DSTV contract ends then we should review it invite other to bid for rights, since most of the stress they have to go thru covering the league will be reduced with the provision of the 20 OB-Vans; they can then use their cameras for magazine programs about the clubs and players, as well as other news concerning the league.
we can also encourage clubs to set up club TVs so that their fans can learn more about the things they do, and it they are attractive enough more people could become their fans.
one more area where I think the state government should look into is the setting up of a proper club manager and make the club transparent so that the public could buy into it, so that real member will emerge

Brilliant idea hope our league managers are listening However, one of the greatest set backs on improving the league is lack of vision By the NPL The major reason the clubs has not attracted corporate sponsors is due to the way the Npl is Managed. Globacom is the Title sponsors and pay the NPL close to 900 Million per year. Only 200 million is shared among the clubs. Meanwhile the clubs cannot go to the market to seek sponsors because the NPL has made everybody believe that Globacom is the league sponsor. Match commissioners are used to intimidate the clubs so no right thinking sponsor will put his money on any club
Secondly most club managers are government appointees Their major aim is to manipulate the over i billion Naira each club is allocated during the league season. All this not withstanding a lot can still be done all that is required is creative managment at the NPL to draft polices that would enable the clubs to florish. The league system is anchored on how well the clubs do. By the way what is the value of the television right of the Nigerian top flight no one knows. How much have the clubs collected still a misery

nzube, As long as government still has its say in clubs and the NFF;as long as profesionals are made to stay away from running the game, the league will be what it is. People running the game here can't provide laws that will enhance stablity. Why do players move from club-to-club every time like they change clothes? Why do cases of hooliganism still persist? Why do teams get away with banning TV cmeras to beam the mathes live, all to perpetuate one crime or the other? The game here is not attractive, and the Football house needs to market the league such that private sector firms will be falling over themselves to sponsor and market the league. The EPL thrives largely on marketing. The TV coverage is second to none. The whole package and structure makes it watchable, even when the teams are Stoke vs Hull. As f or the pitches, when teams own their own stdia,no matter how small the capacity, then we'll see good turfs.Because the Rangers, heartlands,Kano pillars,Dolphins and their like all play on Government owned stadia.Which as you well know are unlikely to be maintainedtill the next global competition.Or what happened to the stadia that we used to host Nigeria 99?

Actually the OP asked a question and people answered the question giving reasons. I don't think that is criticizing or condemning.

inter milan and ac milan make use of one stadium; so its not about who owns the stadium but the arrangement; if the state govt can lease the stadium to a club for say 5 - 10 years, the club will take advantage of the long lease and put the stadium to good use

Useless people - following a league that does know you all exist. while they are enjoying and improving their leagues the so called Nigerian supporters remains broke and busted. Can somebody please tell me what income is generated from Nigeria to the european league, absolute nather with all the fake merchandise.

SOLUTION TO THE NIGERIA LEAGUE
Here is a simple plan to change the phase of our league and let it grow naturely all by itself;
Every club in the National and Premiership whether government or privately owned must find a way bringing together about 20 enterprenuer with good understanding in sports business that will also be ready to undergo regular refresher course to understand the modern way of sports business. these 20 business guru will form the first set of a truly independent board of the club. I suggest that at least 5 member of the 20man board should be an indegine while the rest could be from any part of the world.
Each member should be worth more than 20million naira and be ready pay the sum of 5million as their contribution a board member and as part of 1.5% ownership of the club (with the opportunity to buy more in the future but not more than 20%). Gold members (limited to 20)
Each of the 20man board is expected to use their vast business strenght to bring in another 50 business minded personal who is expected to pay the sum of 100,000 naira (they will be called the silver members; the number of silver member coming through each of the gold member must be 50 or more depending on the gold member ability. Every silver member must become member only through any of the gold members; so so the gold member must ensure that such person is not one with questionable character.
The Silver member is expected to invite at least 100 new member to be called the Bronze member who are expected to pay the sum of 10,000 naira each. the number of Bronze member coming through the Silver member excede 100 depending on the ability of the Silver member to convince his friend and relation and must ensure that such person is not one with questionable character.
The Bronze member is expected to invite at least 50 new member to be called the Green Member that is expected to pay the sum 5,000 naira each. the number of Green Member coming the the Bronze Member must be at least 50 or more depending on the ability of the Bronze member to convince his friend and relation and must ensure that such person is not one with question character.
MORE ABOUT MY NEW PLAN ON THE THREAD, PLS NOTE THAT THIS IS ONLY AN ADVICE AND I NEED YOUR CONTRIBUTION

you are wrong sorry to say but one thing I can assure you is that nothing is impossible provided there is a political will, before GSM some said it was impossible even as I speak to you today most people don't believe the Eko Atlantic City project, the fashola light rail is more or less a mirage to most people. If the government or someone like Fashola seats down in a dinner with Dangote nothing is impossible; Dangote has friend who are equally as rich as he is when they are convinced that he is serious many will join; Rome was not built in a day just as a journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. It is the same way we created the idea that we cannot host the senior world cup and allow SA claim the right go to SA and see what they have transformed into. If we continue to believe that we cannot do it, it will never be done in our life time. You don't have to say it is not possible what can we do to make it possible, we must get it right that is the message I am trying to pass to everyone who is reading this; enough of the cannot attitude, lets say we can. visit this thread http://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?action=post;topic=238138.96;num_replies=113
