I have read 86 different James Hadley Chase novels. They are all very good, you can't stop reading it. In fact, I became addicted after reading the first one which was Believe This. You'll believe anything.

@ balogun,  na wa o. but seriously james hadley chase was good. i read them as a teenager and loved every single one i read. don't tell me you didnt read them too at one time. darlingbas, my first was, emmm, can't remeber its title now ummmm, ... well i can't remember now but i remember; there's always a price tag the way the cookie crumble believe this you believe anything, etc by the way i love the titles more. |

Well i don't know what your opinions are but i put James Hadley chase side by side with writers like Robert Ludlum...he is a masterpiece hero in his own right...my very first one was LAY HER AMONG THE LILIES, and the second one about this esmaldi diamond..anyway if anyone is interested in selling his copies as antiques i am interested in buying. Thanks

Can any of you please tell me the name of a book by James Hadley Chase that I read long time ago. It is about a banker who is going to steal from his bank vault with the help of his girlfriend and her daughter. He seduces them both. I think the woman tries to kill herself in the end.

ha, nicetohave, i also read that book but couldnt finish it, it got lost. i couldnt remeber d title, and i so wanted to finish. it i couldnt sleep for days thinking about how the story ended. the guy was blackmailed into stealing from his bank which was supposed to be the safest bank in the world then. i can't remeber now but i think he helped designed it, abi? it's been years but even now i still wonder how it all ended. so d title is my laugh comes last. i'll look for it.  |

passionsho the title of that particular novel is "I would rather stay poor" - BTW I have about 76 james Hadley Chase novels in my library - I have read some of them about 8 times over through the years.

Well, i'm not really sure if Mark Girland featured in an ear to the ground because it has been ages since i read that book! I've forgotten most of the stories in almost all Chase's novels. I have to start allover again i guess  |

Bagoma, Mark Girland did not feature in an ear to the ground, it is about the esmaldi diamond. Now Mark Gorland, the american spy employ feature alongside malik and smernoof who are both russian spies in: The whiff of money

I think that Chase can go down in history as the most ingenious thriller writer of all times. Albeit his books have got similar plots, they're as exciting as the best in their genre. Agatha Christie has been hailed the Queen of Crime, but I think that's an honour that shold be awarded to James Hadley Chase (1906-1985) - pseudonym for René Brabazon Raymond. Afterall, who else can write such an explosive novel that takes place in just a night yet thrills like it covers years - that Tiger By The Tail.
I have read nearly all the books of his that I've come across, and that's over 80.
Characters that I'd never forget are Poke Toholo (Want To Stay Alive?), the protagonist in Well Now My Pretty, Johnny Bianda (Knock, Knock, Who's There?), Mark Girland, Lu Silk, Jack Archer, Malik, Al Barney, John Anson, Maddox, Tom Lepski, and a host of lovely females featured.
Aside Henri Charriere, Scot Turrow, Tami Hoag and some few authors whose books have made an enormous impact in my life, I would have said that Chases' was the most significant. To anyone who hasn't read any of his books, man, have you been missing.

i think in all i have read just about ten or twelve of Chase"s books. the first one i read hooked me. yes i remember now why pick on me? featuring martin corridon. what a story.
I remember also "theres always a price tag".... murder, insurance claims, dead body in a refrigerator, etc..
a can of worms... a man whose wife left home for holiday and he decided to cheat with a prostitute.
the way the cookie crumbles.... one ugly dwarf character, murder and impersonation...
one bright summer morning....

I am happy all the chase fans are beginning to raise their voices in admiration, even Bagoma has receievd divine memory jolt, i admire the way she described there's always a price tag and the way the cookie crumbles (by the way detective tom lepski feauted in that too) well too bad sometimes a prophet (this time chase) is never given due recognition until hes dead and gone. James hadley Chase?  Lepski......Maddox.........murder, bogus insurance claims? ?? Chase is d best crime- mystery writer OF ALL TIMES!!!! My best titles includes those with Maddox and Lepski...no one has been able to out fox Maddox when it comes to false insurance claims, he always sniffs u out!!!!!!!!! |

@ Nice2hav the title of that Chase is I WOULD RATHER STAY POOR and not MY LaUGH COMES LAST.
The manager of the bank just newly arrived takes the former managers place who had a heart attack.
He falls in love with Kit Loring the woman whose owns the house where he stays. They paln to rob the bank and place the blame on Alice his secretary whom he later murders.
Kits daughter finds out that they were responsible and helps her boyfriend Deputy Sherrif Ken Travers to solve the crime, there is a huge reward for breaking the case, she is reluctant at first because her mother, a hopeless alcoholic is involved, but when Kit kills her self because of guilt for murdering poor Alice, they move in on the manger but he decides to take his own life rather than spending life behind bars, thats when he remembers when Kit told him that she would rather stay poor than spending the ill gotten money and the blood of Alice, he too then regrets and takes his life, thats where the book got its title from. I WOULD RATHER STAY POOR!!!!!!!!!!

jalal, perhaps there are two chase with bank setting, i don't know that would be left for popeson, you &nicetohave to tell me.
Recall, i said i'd just started the story and its about the safest bank in the world. the man who helped designed the bank was being blackmailed into helping the bad guys steal from the bank. i remember he was framed for murder and was photographed while digging the grave. the pictures were then used to blackmail him. the novel got lost at this point.
this is rather different from your account, don't you think?

Bagoma, indeed there are more than two novels with bank robbery settings, infact "the way the cookie crumbles" also have a bank setting, which include the midget and Ira marsh, and detective tom lepski, the one we are talking about is "the safest bank in the world" in which the man who helped designed it is roped in to helped in the robbery and he ended up screwing them up.............the title once again is "My laugh Comes last"
Jalal, im waiting to buy ALL your Chase collection as antiques; I'll personally make a daily post of the chase on this thread for the lovers of chase to read and as a tribute to the greatest thriller writer of all times, James Hadley Chase
