Lord save me from going off on the male chauvinist pigs we have on here! Because she can't cook, she isn't a woman??!!

@topic,

It is important for everyone, men and women alike, to know how to cook but that should not be the basis for marriage.

My friends relationship is on the verge over persistent salty, and burnt food. She just cant cook, and he promises its enough for him to let it go.

That is unrelated and incomparable to the question at hand.

What you should ask is, if he doesn't bring bank home, would I consider him a man and my response would be, does he have a penis?

It is more than compulsory for a woman to know how to cook, not just the cooking of good meals it is also a sign of good upbringing. How can you cope with such a woman?

@poster, i will NEVER EVER marry a woman that doesn't know how to cook, i prefer to stay single and adopt babies
Re: Is It Compulsor For A Woman To Know How To Cook? Would You Marry One Who Doen't? by scktaggif: 10:05am On May 17, 2009
It is a shame some people can't distinguish between a female and a woman.

Some women are normally regarded as "Man of the house" this is not because they have penis or any male physic it is mainly because of the role they played. So man and woman of the house is about the role it is not same thing as male and female. If she can't cook she not a woman, if he can't provide for his family he is not a man, this is even biblical.

Lets see it from another angle. Imagine your own mother can't cook. Ha ! God forbid bad thing.

Ladies if you can’t cook you don’t deserve a husband

Lies, lies and lies again!!!  'Can't cook, won't cook is not the end of the world, is it

'It is not compulsory to know how to cook but it helps if one could.  Lack of culinary skills does not demean a woman or make less of her.  If she could not cook, she must be good at other things in the home, remember that!  Some women may regard themselves as capable in every thing but that's rubbish as we all know - nothing is 100% efficient and for those of us who think they are good in everything, I say you can not be.  And if you call yourself a 'Super woman' hey baby, no such thing as super woman -  prove it if you doubt it? You see, you can not be two places at a time so, you can not do it alone!  You need other peoples' input/support to try to be yet, you will not be.  In fact, you would fail at one thing or the other.  Right, back to the arguement - Compulsory to know how to cook?  In my view, no!  'Can't cook, won't cook', should not be the only criteria to judge a good/decent woman because there are skills some people are good at and some they are not.  For example, women are physically built the same and society expects them to perform or behave in certain ways but do we all??  Not every woman can concieve a baby and deliver naturally abi Therefore, the inability to perform such a natural task does not mean that they are less of a woman  No, because they may have more good qualities/attributes of a good mother however, nature decided to deprive them of such gift. So, the inability to cook meals for the family should be over-looked and should not be an issue in considering what makes a good woman or wife, consider her strengths hopefully, that would compliment her weaknesses.   Hey, if she still can't cook, why not you, abi?? You are both partners, huh? Then cook for the family and stop moaning!  Or would your malehood get in the way/disappear if you cook for your family??  Abi, say Adam been dey cook for Eden before Eve appeared?? Well, if you still worry about what your mates would say regarding your woman not able to cook I suggest, you are better off without such shallow friends, ok??  And if you are still concerned why not get a CHEF or better still eat out - either way, the stresses of worrying about her lack of culinary skills would be forgotten.

i think a lady should know the basics of cooking.not necessary an expert or world class chef. my dad cooks better than my mum.doesn't make him love her less. there is no rule that a woman must learn, it depends on the person she is married to or engaged to

ladies please know how to cook oh, esp if u want to marry that nigerian dude. nor bring americana abi london style here ''i cant cook'' nobody will listen to that one when that lady starts having problem in her house. guys knowing how to cook too is not a sin, there will be times u will need it. Also preparing a suprise meal once in a while is really sweet too. damn i love a man that can cook or at least makes an effort really a turn on for me.
Finally if he eats something u cant prepare (maybe a traditional dish) dont be shy ask someone to teach you a relative of his or a friend . No one knows it all. A good man will appreciate that effort.

nb. a woman that cant cook is not a bad wife material or no less a woman as long as she is willing to learn. babes now is the time before u enter husband house ohhhhhhhhhhhh cheesy wink

It's unbelievable what you hear everyday now. Women now find a reason why they shouldn't know how to cook.
It just can't be believed.
Very soon, it won't be necessary for a Woman to wash clothes, clean her house or even taking care of her children . .
Everything can be out-sourced. . . Even taking care of your Children?
It's appalling what we hear these days. .

Excluding the Husband for a moment. A Woman's primary responsibility in a family is taking care of her Children. . of which feeding them is the most important. .
A Child's intelligence is a big determinant of eventual success. . Food is a major determinant for Children's intelligence.
Healthy feeding helps Children build strong immune systems against diseases and death.
Feeding one's children is also another way a Woman creates a perfect bond with her Children. . . It can also be an indirect way of teaching one's Children to be responsible towards something and someone. .
A Woman that cooks for her Children is quick to see when her Children develop allergies to some type of food. She knows how much Salt is perfect for the eldest Child and how much Sugar for the youngest.

If all this is important, it's as good as saying it is not important to take care of your Children. It's not important for my children to have good health, good upbringing, a good shot at success in future (From Intelligence) . . . and most of all a good role model.

Need I go on? . . . . Imagine a Child growing up saying "Mum doesn't know how to cook" . . . Oh! No. . These days, it's nothing. .

Absolutely unbelievable stuff. .

No Insults, but after these points, only an ignorant, shameless, selfish and short-sighted Mother-to-be will suggest it isn't compulsory for a woman to know how to cook.

It is not necessary for a Woman to know how to cook. . . . It is a flipping imperative!

@nateevs
You captured it all perfectly.

If a woman dont know how to cook, for God sake, let her learn it, perhaps she never had to be in the kitchen to learn from her mama. In marriage, it is one of her duties to keep her home together, unless otherwise it is a deliberate attemt at stamping equality right with her man. It is an african culture for a woman to cook for her man, and that is one of the secrets that has kept the divorce rate low compared with the western world. This equality advocacy has only resulted in more broken homes, unhappy single women, unhappy children who grow up becoming psycopaths. wink
Re: Is It Compulsor For A Woman To Know How To Cook? Would You Marry One Who Doen't? by sashbaby(f): 5:39pm On May 17, 2009
@ nateevs, it is not a prerequisite for marriage.if a man wants to misbehave he sure will.weda she sabi cook or not. what really works is how they see each other
Re: Is It Compulsor For A Woman To Know How To Cook? Would You Marry One Who Doen't? by Krayola(m): 5:52pm On May 17, 2009
I think what you guys are saying is that YOU would rather have a wife that knows how to cook. So would I, but it isn't compulsory, generally.

nateevs:

Do men have some kind of natural allergy to doing these things?

nateevs:

There is nothing appalling about it.  My mother is a great cook,  she cooked once in a while but she also had businesses to run. She didn't hang around the kitchen all the time, but she is a great mother nonetheless. This whole idea that a woman that does not do household chores is not a real woman is just ridiculous. In fact if my mother had played the traditional house-wife role, my life and all my siblings would have gone to sh!t when my late father passed.

Look at all the top universities in the developed countries and u'll notice women are doing waaaaaay better than men in terms of grades and %age of students that actually graduate. Men still dey nairaland dey blow guy on top nothin. Besides, lots of men now are willing to stay at home and help raise kids. I personally wouldn't mind splitting that responsibility with my future wife. Women are working harder than men nowadays, and it is only a matter of time before they start running sh!t. Na only for Africa men still dey make mouth,  women no dey for talk talk,  they are doin the damn thing!!

Your argument has so many holes in it, might as well be a basket. I'll just say this though cause I don't feel like writing an essay right now. A mother not cooking does not necessarily result in a malnourished child.

nateevs:

Feeding one's children is also another way a Woman creates a perfect bond with her Children. It can also be an indirect way of teaching one's Children to be responsible towards something and someone. .
So are- reading to your kids, helping them with their homework, and other acts of affection towards the child. Last time I checked a mother that worked as a professional in order to provide the best for her kids was doing a noble thing,  . .

nateevs:

A Woman that cooks for her Children is quick to see when her Children develop allergies to some type of food. She knows how much Salt is perfect for the eldest Child and how much Sugar for the youngest.
And fathers are not supposed to know these things? Why not?

nateevs:

If all this is important, it's as good as saying it is not important to take care of your Children. It's not important for my children to have good health, good upbringing, a good shot at success in future (From Intelligence) . . . and most of all a good role model.
You are trying to prove that a woman that can not cook WILL end up with unhealthy children with bad upbringing, that will fail due to a lack of intelligence.  Good luck with that,  so far you are doing a lousy job though.

nateevs:

Need I go on?

RUBBISH, RUBBISH and more, RUBBISH!!!

Why is cooking this important to men?  Because, they love food, period!!!

The saying goes 'The way to a man's heart is through his stomach'.  But I think this is rubbish - only desperate women searching for a husband/partner would buy this.
Generally, people don't want what they don't need. If you want a husband, you would act  well for it, abi  You don't have to if you don't need one therefore, there is not Express road to his heart as far as I'm concerned.  I am a good cook but I hate cooking.  I don't have issues with my husband cooking whilst I peel the onions and wash up after wards afterall we are partners, abi In fact, it would even cement our relationship and our children will grow up knowing it's normal to share.  What's my husbands is mine and what's mine is his, abi!  So, your bad advise on here does not wash and wouldn't change a thing.

All I see and read here are all emotional blackmailers - blackmailing women to succumb to their archaic ideas whilst living in the the 21st Century.  Would heaven let loose if the man of the house cook for his family?   Yes, it's good to teach children how to cook but it does not necessarily have to be only their mother doing it.  Assuming their mother suddenly pass away as it can happen sometimes, would he fold his arms and watch his children starve to death  Or quickly head off for a replacement wife which often happens with some selfish and morally bankrupt men?
Its all too easy to make women feel guilty here whilst men get away with murder.  I am beginning to sense some kind of insecurities among some men here - some are even frightened that Western culture would dent our culture - but hey, it had already done so and what's the heck?  Well, there's nothing you can do about that now because, it's already here and people like the idea sorry, buddy!!!  Women have as much rights as men and they must exercise it if they like and no body should bully them into doing differently.  As for the idea that there are so many single divorced women out there, to that I say, so are many men because a divorced woman had a husband and where is he if not in the same statistics?
If divorce is an issue for men then, men  should change their ways; accept that women have equal rights as them (but, they are not doing so on here when they maintains a woman's office is still in the KITCHEN).  They should LOVE AND RESPECT THEIR WOMEN AS THEMSELVES (you don't love and respect your woman when you are in the pub always, drinking your life away and chasing other women, remember!!) that way women would do their bit for the family - keep it together.

What's all this talk about sexually satisfaction? Since when did Nigerian men care about satisfying their women?

oyb:

the ability to cook, vs the  ability to provide food, shelter, clothing etal are are two opposite ends of the spectrum

cooking and sex are better analogies because ultimately, the issue here is about their quality

I chose those two because stereotypically, women are supposed to die in the house cooking, taking care of the kids and open up her legs whenever her husband demands for sex. Also, the man stereotypically has to be the one bringing in all the money and financially providing for the family. The quality of sex on his part is unimportant. Everyone assumes he's a stallion. . . he is fertile and if there's a problem with fertilization, the woman is deemed as barren and booted.

My dear, who says it is?

This is partnership we are talking about, complimenting each other.

a) If a man's privates does not function well due to bad health tell me, how would he compulsorily satisfy is wife sexually?  In that case, they have to work it out themselves what they need to do and no one else.

b) Also, it isn't compulsory that he should provide financially, if he is incapable of doing so e.g. assuming he is disabled with neurological conditions, blind, limb amputation etc ? That's why it's important you marry a woman that would compliment you - a capable woman, ok!  It is also important men support equal rights for women because, when situations like this arises, they can fall back on their rights and claim it for their children and not men seeing it as a challenge to their ego/malehood.
Re: Is It Compulsor For A Woman To Know How To Cook? Would You Marry One Who Doen't? by loyeruope: 7:30pm On May 17, 2009
The person I would marry would have many qualities INCLUDING how to cook. That is not the basis of the marriage as someone asked earlier. The basis of my marriage would be love: love for God and love for one another. But the truth is that there are many girls out there who also love God AND know how to cook. Whatever qualities I would finally settle for, knowing how to cook will be a non-negotiable part of it.
So I wouldn't make such derogatory remarks like knowing how to cook equates womanhood or food is the basis of a marriage BUT for me, a woman who cannot cook and cook well CANNOT MOTHER MY CHILDREN AND SO, CANNOT BE MY WIFE.
