Land that could have been used to build schools and industries have now been monopolised by wealthy pastors.

Na wa oh.

If government imposes tax on pastors and imams, the number of offerings will definitely increase. The masses will pay definitely more.

Government should just revisit the buildings and infrastructures act.

Pastors have no right to force congregation members to give. The Bible makes it clear that giving should be willing.
Any pastor that hijacks this situation to increase the number of offerings is purely a thief. In it for the money.
The law says any salaried person should pay tax.Any pastor who hasn't been paying tax has been defrauding the land.As simple as that.

Looks like some IDIOTS just look for a way to rubbish pastor Adeboye, what has this topic got to do with his person for crying out loud and is he the only pastor in Nigeria? if anyone has any issue with him can they not find a better way instead of talking this nonsense. The last time i checked the auto section guys here are advertising cars worth millions and they are getting sold, same with property section where a single building are being advertised for millions of naira, why not tell them not to buy expensive cars/land/houses because some people are suffering? Some people are just idiots and will stay same till eternity.

Can you blame the secular body?

The Church that is supposed to Cloth, build Homes, preach and give food to the poor is busy

1) building Schools because there is profit in it
2) Investing in big planes
3) buying buses for transportation business
4) puting money in bank to reap Huge profit
5) building bigger places of Worship(business)

The Church cannot heap the coal of fire because they think they are rich by themselves.

OH GOD SAVE YOUR TRUE CHURCH

Trust Me When I Say This: "Me And This Guy Have Something In Comon"

They collect money from you, use it to boost some investments and still make it damn expensive, you did be lucky if you can afford it! Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry How annoying! The last thing I 'Am Alone' Will do on earth is to pay some damn tithe! GOD PUNISH ME THE DAY WAY I TRY TO DO SO!!! EVEN TO GIVE TEN NAIRA WEY DON WASH AS OFFERING SELF I NO FIT Angry Angry

Am begining to find this post & reactions to it hilarious, for a number of reasons.

By the way, i am an up to date Tax payer, both in Lagos & in Uk where i pay 40%, but reading a number of peoples reactions, i dare say, that we will revisit these submissions in a few years time and would like to read our "Honourable" Submissions then, Why do i say this??? You will over taxed by Stealth that you will so cry out that nobody, by then will be able to rescue you. Are you aware that for every flat you build in a block, you must now pay 500k Devt Levy per flat?? thats why one of his commisioners was gloating recently that they made =N=18bn this year from such charges & mark you, this is not the only one, dem plenty well well. Anyway, some of us are already used to paying Taxes in UK Paye; Council; Capital Gains; T.V License etc

The worst part of it is, as nobody, including Mashkov & Eastbay are not challenging our Pastors/Imams on how they spend our offerings and the Pastors/Imams are getting away with it, so is Lagos State getting away with it. Una go see wen!!! Make you still dey mouth Eko O ni Baje, na Una pocket go feel am well well. But on a more serious note, we are all armchair critics. Nairaland has over 300,000 members & we are not yet a pressure group & as long as that persists, our leaders will get away with anything

Uptill today, who has held Tinubu accountable for anything??? Nobody!!!

@ Mashov,

there is a Maxim that goes thus: One who comes into equity must come with clean hands.

Before reaching conclusions, it is good to ascertain your facts, there are churches & eveangelism work being presently carried out by Nigerians all over Africa including Angola that you mentioned, in fact, Redeemed has presence in Angola & practically all countries in Africa. I am not an advocate for RCCG, the RCCG Church can speak for itself but as the maxim above goes, you Mashov, have you proved yourself first before castigating others? Have you fulfilled your Tax Obligations to the Letter??? What % of your bank account do u use for the less priviledge? How often to you release your Computer to less priviledge when you are not using it.

I as a person, i consider what i do first before i criticise others. Its noteworthy

E go better for you. How many preachers here stop on their way to work to stop a child that is hawking when she/he should be in school, ask them why and take up responsibility for their education

How many of them has a direct debit for at least a charity organisation?

Accountable taxing system is synonymous with a buoyant society. It is a give and take thing, just like nature itself. But some countrys like britain push it too far by taxing things like TV(tv license),infact, they are now proposing to start taxing BBC iPlayer that use be free on the on the net.

If u must have it,u have to pay for it.

How many of our Leaders can Honestly say this below & How many of us Nairalanders will behave like this, if & when, we find ourselves in positions of authourity???

I would like to mention that for the entire twelve years that I was governor of Judah, —neither I nor my officials drew on our official food allowance.

This was quite a contrast to the former governors who had laid heavy burdens on the people, demanding a daily ration of food and wine, besides a pound£ of silver. Even their assistants took advantage of the people.

But because of my fear of God, I did not act that way.

I devoted myself to working on the wall and refused to acquire any land. And I required all my officials to spend time working on the wall.

I asked for nothing, even though I regularly fed 150 Jewish officials at my table, besides all the visitors from other lands!

The provisions required at my expense for each day were one ox, six fat sheep, and a large number of domestic fowl. And every ten days we needed a large supply of all kinds of wine.

Yet I refused to claim the governor’s food allowance because the people were already having a difficult time.

Remember, O my God, all that I have done for these people, and bless me for it. Nehemiah 5:14-19

He explained that the compliance might not affect pastors and imams who depended on tithes and zakat, but those who employed by churches and mosques for religious purpose.

even those ones who don't earn a salary should be taxed based on their personal expenditures and Networth increase (net assets bought) in the tax period. A man who owns his church or mosque may even be earning more than those employed on salaries.

Incase you are uneducated and didnt do economics, you should know that every one no matter what level is a contributor to the economy.your consumption is a contribution,so is your work, savings even when you leisure, you're contributing.
So because politicians are stealing your public fund that makes you a fool abi? Thats the stupidity of your reasoning.
A hungry man will do whatever you tell him inorder to become rich,a sick man will give all his savings if you promise healing. Your pastors (adeboye included) play on peoples afflictions and insecurities. That makes them and you brainless zombies. . . .the law will soon catch up with them.

Even the Lord admonishes that we give to Caeser what is Caeser's,but that's not enough reason for some depraved nairalanders to write drivel against genuine pastors based on twisted info/rumours in the press.
Of course I know there are so many so-called pastors out there who are not really pastors, but frauds, same goes for the fraudulent Imams and alfas

dude,
did you read the post at all?
The churches and mosques are registered charities, we know BUT their heads (pastors and imams) earn incomes and have personal assets!
the thread says to tax pastors and imams NOT their churches and mosques.

I think fashola and his people need to find out about charity.

Pls read the article again. Where did it say they are taxing churches. They plan on taxing SALARY that pastors and Iman receive. Pls be aware that it is totally different form money from Tithe and Zakat.

This has nothing to do with personal issues fashola has with anyone. In foreign countries Pastors pay tax on their salary (not tithe).

Even workers of charity organizations pay taxes on their salary but, the government does not tax the orgnaization itself.

Nigeria churches are not charitable organizations in the first, they are purely profit oriented in practice, money mongers.Laws that apply in the west shouldn't apply in nigeria because it is a different ball game.Left to me both individuals and bodies should be taxed.

If Nigeria truly implements a tax regime that is effective, works for the state and for the PEOPLE. . .then everyone should pay taxes as individuals for as long as they are NIGERIANS. If they use the good roads, they enjoy security, they get good education, they get welfare, they have access to good health care. . .all like the nations who have solid tax regimes. . .then WE SHOULD all pay taxes.

One thing I should mention also, much as we all pay taxes, the government also issues tax refunds such that you get cash back from the government. I know over here, the check is sent to you every quarter and this is really good! Imagine after paying your taxes, and it is used judiciously. . .you get a check in your mail from the government? You will hardly complain next time you pay taxes!

No! I don't have the type of brain you carry that makes you think like a downcast and frustrated animal. If I have been brainwashed, let that be my headache and not yours so you don't have to take panadol extra for my headache and do not have to go for scull surgery cos of another man's prob.

From your post it shows that everyone has a destiny and it is in his/her hand not you own stupid hand, so why do you want to die another man's death? Why do you care where and how people manage their money?

Yes, I am uneducated, that is why I can type better words than you do. But you! the most educated on this thread find it difficult to compose properly. This post is even better than the previous, I guess someone typed and composed this for you.

What have you contributed so far to your street not to talk of the economy of Nigeria. You are a total waste!

I did not accuse anyone/politician of stealing my money and if they do, I will continue paying my tax and doing good. Nemesis will catch up with whoever do that not my judgment on what anyone does with his money.

So if you as a hungry man his advised to kill your friends or sacrifice one of your family members for rituals, you will do so? Oh!! you are a waste and a disgrace! Like I said earlier, Poverty/Inferiority is not measured by material things, It is a state of the mind.

What afflictions and insecurities do they play on? Your point is baseless boy! If they do whatever, I will give you few options to solve the prob, go and meet him in his house by protesting like you suggested earlier or drag your family members that are in his church away, convince as many people as you can one on one not on NL or leave people to live their lives. Afterall you just said it that ones destiny is in his hand!

You see? you said the law will catch up with them, GOOD. Leave the law to catch up with them.

But come ooo, why are you sounding so frustrated and deadly? I can imagine how your body is vibrating as you punch that keyboard. take it easy now, Wink Smiley

Stop digressing the topic. Your points are contradicting and confusing to you yourself.

@Guk,

I think I'm beginning to admire and appreciate you arguments but let's get the fact straight,

1. I have paid my tax up to date; I am on a PAYE tax system and have all my certs to show for it.
2. The fact are there that most of our pastors are more focused on establisghing churches in European countries. I am not being particluar about any one here, there is no point castigatinig any as I am not here to judge any but to give my own personal opinion and comments about happenings in our christiandom. I am well aware of some churches that do more of humanitarian than business (i.e. creation of schools and micro finance banks that lends to people at exhorbitant rates). E.g there is a church that is primarily into rehabilitating of area boys in Lagos (GBN is the acronym)
3. I do give as this is my principle of wealth multiplication and it is also a matter of my covenant with God which muct be fulfilled. I have pastors, orphans widows on my regular list.
4. We should allow the government to do what is supposed to be done in order to facilitate development of i nfrastructures, Rome was not built in a day, the Fashola administration, I can say is taking the right step in the right direction, with time and support of the people, they will get there.

For those that live abroad, you cannpt joke with tax evasion so why resent paying taxes here?

Ciao.

So can i ask a question. I do not understand, I am not against anyone religion. Who pays Imam salary? from what I know in Nigeria, Imam do not get paid salary. So what are you people upto??? So what is the motive?

Some Imam's and Pastor's do get paid salary.
