Submissions to New Writing 16
Writers from, or resident in, the UK and the Commonwealth are encouraged to submit short stories, poetry, literary essays, memoirs, biography and fiction. This could be an extract from a work in progress. Writers who are not from, or residents in, the UK and the Commonwealth are not eligible to apply. The deadline for submissions for New Writing 16 is 30 April 2007.
The work must be unpublished and not be due for publication until at the earliest September 2008, and the author should be willing to give the British Council non-exclusive electronic rights for two years following publication, plus translation rights and other sub-rights to be confirmed. The maximum submission sizes are given below. Submissions over the following size or word count will not be considered:
- 6 poems and/or
- 2 short stories of up to 7,000 words each and/or
- 2 prose extracts of up to 7,000 words each
Submissions should be sent in triplicate, clearly typed, double-spaced, page numbered and with name and address on each piece to:

Submissions from outside the UK can be submitted by e-mail to
newwriting@britishcouncil.org The preferred format is an MS Word document, sent as an e-mail attachment. Unfortunately, due to the volume of submissions we receive, it will not be possible to return manuscripts.
