First Class In The University: Is It Hard? by chyziani: 7:53pm On Oct 19, 2006
While I was on the web reading the news, I can across a news on an Igbinedion University student who had a first class in law, I was so inspired by it. But I have a question to ask,  , is it that hard to acquire a first class?

Please can you read:

Igbinedion varsity records another first class
By Victor Omoregie

In the year 1999, the Federal Government of Nigeria decided to allow private initiative in the provision of university education in the country. That directive became the catalyst which saw Chief Gabriel Igbinedion establish the first private university in the country – Igbinedion University , Okada. Chief Igbinedion received a certificate on the 10th of May 1999 to operate a university.

The university commenced its academic programmes in the 1999/2000 session in five (5) Colleges namely, Arts & Social Sciences, Business & Management Studies, Health Sciences, Law and Natural & Applied Sciences. The foundation students arrived Okada on Friday, 15th October 1999. Since then the university has without interruption upheld its desire to return tertiary education to the internationally accepted calendar of September to June.

The College of Law is among the foundation Colleges of the university. It is worthy of note that Igbinedion University, Okada is the only private university in the country that runs three (3) professional courses, namely, Law, Engineering and Medicine. The College of Law has produced two sets of Law graduate since inception. The first set of Law graduates that went to the Nigeria Law School recorded a 100% pass at the Bar Examinations. The present second group of Law graduates in the Law School has just created a record. Among the Law graduates that have just completed the mandatory professional law examinations at the Law School is Damilola Sunday, who bagged a First Class.

The true ambassadors of any university are its graduates. Their performances when they graduate and join the larger society, goes a long way to show what they received as training from their alma mater. Igbinedion University , Okada has consistently made known that all the courses offered by the university are accredited by the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) and necessary relevant bodies. It is on record that all accreditation visits to the university have been successful. The various courses are at different stages of accreditation.

A course or programme is said to be due for accreditation visit if it has been operated for three (3) years. This means that no student can graduate in a course or programme without the programme being accredited by NUC and the relevant professional body. Accreditation in essence is to make sure that there is a uniform educational standard operative in all Nigeria universities in the country. The NUC is saddled with responsibility of making sure that educational standards are not compromised. Also the relevant professional bodies make sure that the students receive educational instructions of professional standards.

Olawuyi Damilola Sunday, a Law Graduate from Igbinedion University , Okada, who recently bagged a first class at the recently concluded Bar Examinations at the Nigeria Law School , is a very unique individual. An indigene of Osun State , Mr. Olawuyi was born on the 28th of August 1983 in Ibadan . He attended INRI Nursery/Primary School in Ibadan and for his secondary school education, attended the Igbinedion Education Center in Benin City . He was admitted into Igbinedion University , Okada, during the 2000/2001 session to read Law.

His school certificate results were indicative that an intelligent student had been admitted into the university. His certificate showed that he had three As, three Bs and two Cs. This pattern was further enhanced with the instructions, tutoring and guidance he received from his lecturers at the Law College of Igbinedion University, Okada. Most importantly, his lecturers say of him that he was a very respectful and humble student. Ever ready to learn and following instructions.

For his first year in the university, his results showed that he had twelve As, four Bs and one C, for the 200-levekl he got eight As and three Bs, for the 300-level he had eleven As and two Bs, at the 400-level he had seven As, two Bs and one C. For his final year, he received eight As and one B. Because of his exceptional and brilliant performance, the external examiner to the College of Law during his final examination had to take his scripts away for re-assessment. The results came back the same. His project in which he received an A, is titled “The 1999 Constitution and the Subversion of Federalism (May 2005)”. Till today the project has continued to provoke intellectual discuss among the constitutional lawyers and the inquisitive minds.

The only sad moment of his life came two weeks to the commencement of his final examinations, with the loss of his mother, Mrs. Victoria Olawuyi. According to Sunday Olawuyi, although he missed his mother and the loss was painful, he knew that his mother would have acceded to his decision to be steadfast and continue with his examinations. He said he had dedicated his success at his final examinations to the memory of his late mother.

Mr. Olawuyi was President of the Law Students Association (LAWSA) of Igbinedion University , Okada during the 2003/2004 session. According to his Project Supervisor and Sub-Dean, College of Law , Mrs. C. Okoboh “Sunday Olawuyi never missed a class throughout his stay at the university, whether in health or sickness”. He is a very outstanding student. Whenever the school goes on vacation, Olawuyi just goes home for one week and then returns to the university. Upon his return he copies the entire syllabus for all the courses that he would offer in the next session and thus prepares ahead of his classmates and lecturers. He reads for at least nine (9) hours in a day, which is indicative of a very disciplined mind concluded Mrs. Okoboh.

Professor Mojisola Ogungbe, Dean of the College of Law , Igbinedion University , Okada and has this to say about Mr. Olawuyi. “He is very respectful, humble, intelligent and levelk0headed. Am not surprised that he bagged a first class at the Bar Examinations. He has already done it here earlier on by obtaining a first class’.
At the end of his programme at the Law College, Olawuyi asked his lecturers to impress upon his father that he will repeat the same feat of obtaining a first class at the Law School, as he did at the university, if he was adequately empowered. To this request, his father obliged him.

During the third Convocation Ceremonies of Igbinedion University, Okada held on Saturday, 26th November 2005, Mr. Olawuyi received the following prizes – Oba Erediuwa Prize for the Best Graduating Student, Vice Chancellor’s Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Law, Professor Olu Aina Family Prize for the Best Graduating Student, who must pass in First Class Hons. And the Vice Chancellor’s Prize for the Overall Best Graduating Student. Aside from these prizes, he received promised a cash prize of N100,000 by Dr. Ahmadu Adamu Mu’Azu, Executive Governor of Bauchi State .

While at the Law School , Mr. Olawuyi participated in a scholarship examination for Post-Graduate studies at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was successful and has since proceeded to Canada after the completion of his Bar Examination. The scholarship is being sponsored by the Canadian Embassy, the University of Calgary and the Law College of the University of Calgary . The scholarship is worth $30,000, with all expenses paid.

The performance of Sunday Damilola Olawuyi has again showed that Igbinedion University , Okada would continue to provide and produce quality manpower for national development. The performance is also an indication that Igbinedion University , Okada provides the right learning environment, teaching aids, professional education and quality staff to impart the right knowledge on the students.

Its not hard to get a First Class in the University but you can only achieve that by studying extra hard and all things will work out fine.All depends on Hardwork and Studying hard

Its very hard to get as some lecturers will go out of their way to frustrate your efforts. I'm a living example, so i know.

All da same, do your best, a very good 2nd class uppers is almost same as 1st class.

Cheers!!!

It's not at all difficult to bag a first class.Just attend your lectures,know what's going on academically in all classes and I wonder why you wouldn't make it.It's not working hard that matters.Just be smart in all ramifications and work gradually all through the semester.
Like me,I get enough sleep on daily basis and still doing great.My classes are really tight but I manage to attend all lectures and get the materials right in class.This is not graduate school.Getting a first class doesn't make u a genius-it only shows you met the requirements for the course and at least of average intellect.I'm a senior now in telecomms and have gotten just 2 B's ever since I started studies.I still have time for lots of extra-curriculars.
Making a first class is up to you.It begins on your first day in college.So work smarter and not harder as you need time to ease.

@mathway guess s' b'cos ur not studing in Nigeria. but I think daz an excuse though!. I know with diligence and little prayer, first class is possible.
Re: First Class In The University: Is It Hard? by Seyigoy(m): 1:22pm On Nov 12, 2006
I think its unattainable, next to impossible cos it not a function of how well u study, or how booksmart u are. Wat happens if the individual has missing results?!

now if u have a few of those over the 4yrs at the schl. 1st becomes nothing more than a dream.

1st class is not easy at all.
Re: First Class In The University: Is It Hard? by mathways(m): 6:37pm On Nov 18, 2006
@Seyigoy
Please,guy a first class is possible.The nigerian universities produce lots of perfect GPA holders on annual basis.In fact,they are numerous and are making the country proud overseas.The issue of saying is unattainable or practically impossible is unfounded.If you desperately need something you'll surely get it.But first class should be your aim.You should aim to develop yourself in all the facets of life.I don't encourage being the stereotypic always-nose-in-the-book first class geek.
In a nutshell,Summa cum laude is something that lots of people get and more are gonna get it .Just do your best.I don't believe in working hard to get a first class.Work hard if you are on a research project.If you are brainstorming to come up with interesting discoveries,thats where the issue of working hard comes in.But if it's just getting the A's,what should stop you if you attend all lectures,ace yout problem sets,get everything as they are being taught and not going to "crash" 3 days to exams.
All the same,thats my approach to getting my A's.I work smart cos I need to keep up with current trends in life,movies,music,sports and the like.I only work hard when I'm on an internship!!!
Re: First Class In The University: Is It Hard? by saintsam(m): 9:18am On Nov 20, 2006
The simplest result to get out of a nigerian university is first class,the hardest result is lower classs.Now am speaking idioms.According to mathways,work smarter and not harder.Remember the battle is not to the strong neither the race to the swift.For u to make a first clas,do these things-

N0 1- WHERE OTHERS ARE SITTING,STAND.

N0 2-WHERE OTHERS ARE STANDING,STANDOUT,

N0 3- WHERE OTHERS ARE STANDING OUT,BE OUTSTANDING,

N0 4- WHERE OTHERS ARE OUTSTANDING,THEN BE A STANDARED.

I repeat,the simplest result to bag out of any university is a first class,while the hardest result is a lower class.quote me wrong.

@saintsam,
Men,you are correct.You just nailed it right perfectly.I love the way you composed the writeup.
As a word,first class can be the simplest grade to get out of college.Just follow and apply the idiomatic principles spelt out by saintsam above.
Saintsam,did you graduate or will graduate with a first-class?

mathway,am a medical student in the university of jos,in nigeria,am not workin to bang a first class,am workin to be the best I can in watever I do.my best can be more than a first class.In this world don't limit yourself.first class is a limitation to your ability.Bill gates was a drop out from a university,but today,even those that bang a first class from universities and professors are now summitting to him.First class is not the ultimate,your ability is the ultimate.
Strives to be your best (not someone else best) in watever u do. First class only shows how conventional u are with ur academics,not ur ability,dats y i quote mathway,work smarter and not harder.
Re: First Class In The University: Is It Hard? by mathways(m): 7:24pm On Nov 20, 2006
@saintway,
You need to get something right here.Bill Gates wasn't a drop out.He was on the dean's list for three semester's at stretch.He made perfect GPA's.Thats to tell you you that the guy was really good.People really confuse this issue of being a drop-out.He suspended his studies indefinitely and I don't think that makes him a drop-out.I see a drop-out as someone who'e unable to complete studies due to academic inability.

@saintway,
I don't think anyone should use a third party as a parameter of success.But I doubt if you wouldn't graduate summa cum laude if you are really good in your field(I mean academically).
Wish you the best.

Re: First Class In The University: Is It Hard? by mathways(m): 1:35pm On Nov 21, 2006
@saintsam,
In that case,people should differentiate those who couldn't conclude their studies due to academic inability from the few prodigies who INTENTIONALLY withdrew from studies.Most people assume a drop-out to be someone who was thrown out of college due to incompetency.I only wanted to stress this point.Your contributions I think have got good sides to it.My regards and when are you concluding studies?

I am doing a part time degree. Do you think this rules can apply to me as well?? Imagine, I don't have time to attend all classes (though no excuse for not reading all books).
Anyway, I think I love the four rules and lastly,
WORK SMART, NOT HARD.
Re: First Class In The University: Is It Hard? by ow11(m): 1:12pm On Oct 08, 2007
in a public uni in nigeria, u need to work very hard ( study and memorise a lot of those crappy, outdated notes the teachers belch out during classes) if u can't memorise all because they can be gazillions, u either collab with a friend or do micro chips. for some reason the lecturers can't understand another route to the answer.( those who did computer science will know better) they only accept the statement dictated in class or written in their handouts.

then the most important part is to do follow up after exams. any missing scripts, bad belle lecturer or 69% should be padded. also make friends with the most important lecturers in your dept. because when the chips are down they will help u fight any devil that wants to bring u down.

If u do all these, a 1st class will be urs+ u will be able to defend it.
from my descriptions i think it is hard and also expensive ( u need a deep pocket).
Re: First Class In The University: Is It Hard? by Andriel: 12:59pm On Oct 09, 2007
I need to put something right here. A lot of people tell stories of Bill gates being a drop out without a good knowledge of his academic background. Bill gates was an excellent student. His father was a lawyer and as such wanted him to study law. He dopped out of law school because he discovered he didnt really have a liking for law. But why he stopped further formal education was That he wrote the DOS application that ran very well on the first micro computer. He didnt want anyone to go into producing the software before him. Thats why he stopped school. yet he studied hard and still studies on his own. Many professors have failed his exams. yet people refer to him as a dropout.

My advice for the one who wants to get a well-deserved first class, not the one gotten by dubios means, is to get serious right from the first day in school. study hard and be CONSISTENT with ur hardwork. A lot of people work hard for a season and then relax and at d end they say they were denied first class. but if u maintain consistent hardwork all thru, u will make it. My two brother have first class, one from unilag---computer science, the other from UNN---surveying and photogrametry.

Thanks

Making a first class is not too difficult, it takes extra work, and care, ultimately God's grace. But i must tell u one thing, look at the past of those that have first class in college, their SSCE, and their performance in secondary school. They would have performed excellently. For those who did well in secondary school and fumbled in the university its because they got carried away by the wind of the campus. some even believed that the university is a playing ground and everything is easy. these people end up playing with the acedemics at the early, before they realise it their G.P.A. don get "K" leg. For schools that run the Cumulative system your part 1, matters a lot and it goes a long way in determining what you are likely to get out with. It even gives you the strong will and believe to want to graduate with a first class. Dont believe n people that will tell u its not possible, its a lie.

even with schools that run the contributive method of assessment your part 1 is important and goes a long way in determining what your lecturers feel about. their perception is important too. where you make a missed it in further exams they will believe its a mistake which they wont believe for others.
