An Egyptian man, whose family refused to give him permission to marry a girl he loved from a lower class family, cut off his own penis to spite them.The 25-year-old laborer from a prominent family in the province of Qena, one of Egypt poorer and most conservative regions, had unsuccessfully petitioned his father for two years to marry the girl before he heated up a knife and sliced off his reproductive organ and mutilated his testicles.
The young man was in stable condition in the hospital after the incident. Doctors were unable to reattach the severed member.
Marriages in some parts of Egypt are between similar social classes and are rarely for love.
