One Month To Bury A Dead Person?!
« on: October 26, 2006, 02:25 PM »

I'm shocked, because I read a month or so ago that the Nigerian actor JT Tom West is dead. Now I read on another thread that he'll be buried this coming weekend.  Shocked Does it really take that long in Nigeria to bury someone? or is this a 'special' case? So what could be taking so long, or is it the normal period for such things in Nigeria? what would the family be doing in the meantime, are there any specific rituals/customs that require that a body be kept for so long. Excuse my ignorance guys, just trying to understand  Smiley

It's common practice in Naija to freeze a corpse in the mortuary, and prepare for a befitting burial ceremony. Mind you, burial in Naija is yet another opportunity to host a party, even if it makes little sense that the chief celebrant is long dead.
As a rule, I think a Muslim must be buried within a couple of days.
Recently, some communities and Christian denominations has put in place rules mandating burials within a couple of weeks to a month, to discourage the skyrocketting cost of showcasing the dead in Naija.
