Good point here. I dont think that the CISCO certifications are necessary. HOWEVER, they do give you an edge over others, when applying for jobs or when going for particular positions (DATACOMS, GPRS) within the telecom environment. This is because some of the switches used in these environment may be CISCO switches or something related which may require the knowledge gained from the CISCO qualification. That said, i know a couple of guys who are either working with the vendors or with the operators in their Core Network areas who do not have any CISCO qualifications.

Huawei or NSN or Ericsson all have their own in-house training programs, concerning their nodes. Once you learn from one of these vendors, it is easy to understand what obtains with any other vendor - that is one reason why it is easy to move jobs between them and with operators too.

I think it would be appreciated by a lot of people if the pros in this field would share their working experiences, how they started and how they moved up to where they are now,

pls I am a 300L elect/elect stdnt in O.A.U and I love programming a lot. but with the trend I see and here, I always get discouraged about learning c++ (alreeady started). do u feel I should just go ahead and get the diff certificates as it is now today or maybe something good can come out of my programming? I get confused almost everyday. Abeg I need an experinced driven advice.

  c++ is good for you, but learnning JAVA is more paying nowadays since it is the net modified forms of c++. you can also consider learnning VB.NET which is microsofts net version of visual basic programming lang. many more lang are been developed, but learnning a particular lang. gives you the concept of programming and you can easily learn any other lang.

I'm attaching a list of eBooks I'm offering to all enthusiastic starters like myself on the forum (based in Lagos) who are passionate about Telecoms but don't know where to begin. Its taken me about 4 years (& you don't want to know how much slow browsing in cafes, ) to put this together.
The offer is free. Sincerely but has two drawbacks:
1. I cant burn to flash 'cos my DVD drive is bad &
2. I can't attach & send it by email or to any free File hosting servers, so I really don't know what to do for those not based in Lagos. Ideas anyone ?

@ AjanleKoko, having gone through this thread, I truely have to commend you for the various advices you've given. Please keep up the good work sir.

That said, pls I also wish to seek your advice on 2 issues, the 1st being securing a job in Nigeria. Like most posters on this thread, I graduated with B.Eng in Elect & Elect engineering. But I also graduated with an M.Sc in Wireless Communication Systems (UK) and I'm also about 2 graduate with a 2nd M.Sc in Management from a business school this year(UK). However, I've only had 2 years of work experience within the telecom field (vsat, terrestrial microwave radio installations, FOC/SOC, CATV) & I feel this may not be enough. What are my chances of getting a good job in any of the telco service providers? And will my limited experience limit me to only entry-level job?

Next issue is on the CCNA VOICE route. Do I also have 2 read the CVOICE material?
