Reuben Abati
After reading Reuben Abati's frustrations, and the responses it garnered from Eldee, Banky and other people -
I must say the Abati guy has some valid points
Main reason why i cant be bothered about Nigerian songs anyway, from day one, i have never been a fan!
I just thought it was a bit harsh but he was bang on pretty much all the time

Eldee
Some valid points too but dude was a bit rude and prolly misunderstood some of the message Abati was homing in on.

Banky
Again some parts of Abati's message was mis-understood but good point on linking artistes and highlighting the differences!

Conclusively, Nigerian artistes need to step up the game and people like Reuben Abati should be more cautious about rants in the future!

Mr. Reuben Abati should stick to jornalism and stop blabbing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Banky W, abeg  Kari go!!!!! I de your back

@Eldee you too much, you just hit the nail on the head, that man is an old skool so he should bother more about how his fuckedup generation can correct all the mistakes they have done than blabbing about artiste.

If you say Eldee was rude, then u assumed in your head that Abati's write up was written with the respect for the people he was referring to.
Please be corrected that regardless of your age and status in society; when you occupy sensitive positions there should be a manner and attitude in communicating with people; regardless of your personal opinions.

Eldee spoke to him like his mate because Abati obviously did not take in account the amount of hardwork, and effort this young people have put into the music industry. He has played no role in the entertainment world and does not have the audicity to make such open condemnation. Also i fault him for calling out names and quoting their lyrics and referring to it as nonsense, for doing that he insulted them directly and hence deserves what ever response in what ever manner it comes.

Amen!!

People deserve respect because they are human beings, not because they have achieved anything special. The moment you take a shit on another human being you deserve what you get, regardless of how "respected" you are.

I'm gonna frame Banky W piece. Brilliance at the very best. Priceless and pure class. He attacked Reuben Abati with a vengeance.
I counted 10 technical knockouts. Especially the Fela part -27 wives and smoked gbana plus also half naked on stage.  That counts for 2 TKOs'. Smiley

Surely no one can come back from that?

Even though Abati had some valid points he was also damn too hypocritical and false accusations. Look at him groping on Beyonce  Grin.
The Government has failed the youth woefully, shouldn't they fend for themselves or does he advise them to go into crime?

I follow Nigerian Artistes and you can very well say that these guys have improved BIG TIME. Now I can even afford to watch their music videos. Some of them are actually top notch.  Cool (Nollywood is a different case all together. They have more damn work to do).

That said they need to step up their game and they certainly need encouragements. It is not in his place to say which song will last. ONLY TIME CAN TELL.
Agreed most of the artistes of today (worldwide) are commercial ones but who no wan make money?
Besides, you find the younger generations remixing old songs, therefore breathing life into it. Certainly there is nothing bad in that.
There will always be classics in any given generation. In 50 years time, who knows some little boy may be remixing 9ice's songs.

2pac arguably the best rapper of all time, had some powerful lyrics ("Changes"-anyone? That song heavily sampled the 1986 hit "The Way It Is" by Bruce Hornsby and the Range. Bet most of you don't even know that) and well, some very rubbish ones.

I don't even want to talk about the "Nigerian" issue. The guy is way off mark.

Mr Abati was obviously judging a book by its cover.

My 0.2 cents.

Mr. Abati has once again displayed the holier-than thou attitude of his generation. He obviously has not bothered to understand today's music yet he condemns it. His generation is the worst thing to happen to Africa and Nigeria despite the immense opportunity they had to build up this continent. Yet, theyre the ones who condemn 'generation y' the most

Spots on Banky W but i thought El Dee was a little bit rude. But anyway we shouldn't get carried away because according to Baz Luhrman song "Everybody is free to wear sunscreen" Accept certain inalienable truths: prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old; and when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders. So I cant really blame Reuben Abati but he should embrace our generation and try to understand us. peace out

well, in my opinion the Abati man had his points but dint structure it well due to him not doing his home work well.Banky and Eldee were protecting thier intrest which is a normal thing to do if u are in the opposing view or getting hit the way they were but the truth is WE the new generation have quite some work to do,there are tooooo many meaningless and shameless songs in the market, the ones that try to come up with songs that would swing through time find it ruff,u come up wit a demo n u will hear that this isnt what the crowd wants to hear but when u come up with sexual meaningless songs with beats they go, yeah this is the shit they want to hear.If this amount of songs are on air u really cant imajine those on stand by waiting to get in.Truthfully the rooftop chorus was not suitable and in this age all u nid is a catchy chorus and beats, the rest(the body of the song) dosnt register in the minds of the people, despite the inspirational lyrics, sadly the only thing that song would be remembered for is that terrible chorus'ori mi wu o, e la igi mo'. there are many songs in this category and alot worse. We've got a lot to do b4 we head 4 a decline like nollywood, oops nollywood had always been on the declline, sorry!! I wonder if it's the same article i read that's causing this war. maybe i have to read it again and again to see what
Abalti said wrong.
I am in my 30s and listen/dance to all these hip hop Naija music but that doesn't take away the fact being made by
Abalti that they lack substance.
Banky's & Eldee's response are simply off mark.
Abalti's point is simply that the young generation should think deeper! It 's not only in Nig, but also in USA.
The world is moving faster, leaving out so much of the things that matter.

It's quite unfortunate what the media has been turned into. For a man of Reuben Abati's personality to hurriedly choose a topic and cannot carry out an extensive research to buttress his point explains the kind of lazy media practioners we have.
A young hip hop artiste who I'm sure a lot regarded as a street urchin could take his time out of his busy schedule to create a brilliant piece also goes a long way to show how hard working the present youths are. It also shows the dugged approach of youths in getting money. This could be understood with the music written and composed by these youths. They have chosen to stay awake while a lot sleep. So for someone from a failed generation to critisize such hardworking youth who has chosen not to steal (just like our eminent leaders do with funds meant for 140 million Nigerians) is absurd. THEY HAVE ALSO CHOSEN NOT TO PAINT A BAD IMAGE OF THE COUNTRY JUST LIKE THE GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER DOES, instead they are known all over the world as individuals who are proud to be Nigerians that explains their slogan 9ja 4 life.

Apart fron the chap (Mr Abati) really goofing in this write-up, i have never really had much respest for him unlike most of his readers or followers out there, my main reason for this is that i don't have time for people who always speak negatively about our great country "Naija" or about the people or about the going-ons out there.
I have not come across an article written be the chap( feel free to correct me if i'm wrong) that actually paints the people or the country in a positive light!!!, a friend (that worships Mr Abati) emails the chaps articles every friday and i have always told him about my view about the chaps negativity; i am not quite sure how old Mr Abati is, but dude we need to start believing in ourselves as a people and appreciate the products( music and movies including) that we produce whatever the generation, i have friends from all over the world and i am so damn proud when i hear them singing or dancing the music the our great "Mr Abati" is trying to put down.
I listen to all types and genres of music including my where i don't understand what they are saying, but that is exactly what is, "Music".

Well enough of my ranting, Mr Abati i beg you to please learn to move with the times and appreciate our people and product for what they are today and going to be tomorrow, same way as you appreciate the people of the past.

P.S
You guys should listen to the music of a lady called "Sara Tavares", she is from Cape Verde and sounds absolutely superb.

Unfortunately Reuben Abati and many other journalist like Simon Kolawole write without doing any homework. Grin Grin Grin

It is only because more people have a passion & understanding of music that makes Abati's errors to be so comical, That is the way he has been writing for ages.

IMO this guy is no journalist. He is a well educated guy that hides his lack of exposure behind colorful and elaborate prose. I'm starting to get the feeling people respect him mainly because they AGREE with most of what he has written in the past. People have mentioned that he speaks up against corruption and what not. . . That could be pandering. . u know, cheap populism. Telling people what they want to hear. Thats what he tried to do with this article. . . he was, imo, pandering to his generation.

The music coming out of Naija is amazing. There are some not so great songs, and there are others that leave a lot to be desired, but you should never knock a man for trying to provide for his family, as long as he isn't breaking the law. Standards are different, tastes vary. If we really want naija to be a free country we have to learn to put up with things we don't like, because other people put up with stuff that we do like. I like Asa a lot, but I listen to other Naija artistes more.

I think Asa is very talented and a blessing to Nigeria, but I grew up on gangsta rap. Thats what I love. I like songs about party and bullshit. I like music that make my windows vibrate and my head pound. . . . I like artistes that "talk" more than I like those that sing and play musical instruments. I'll really appreciate anyone that can show me, with a sound argument and not an appeal to some irrelevant factor(s), how that makes me, or the people that make the music i enjoy, people whose interests should not count because our tastes differ from what others think is "decent" or "acceptable".

Mr Abati should shut d F, k up cos he doesn't know jack!
the entertainment industry is the one cheap place that millions of Nigerians can turn to for some
Joy and happiness is the totally messed up country(a CD is just N150). when i see what is happening there i feel there is still hope
for the young of this nation. A place where their talent is appreciated in cash and Kind( , not that kind o!)
Our artists are one set of people that other countires genuinely admire for their talent and ability to make something good(and gettin better),out of the toughest conditions.A lot of those in the industry back in  the era that he so longs for, fled the country for greener pastures if i can remember correctly. more of our talented people abroad are encouraged by what they see to want to come back home and contribute what they, how they can .
so Mr Abati "buy the CD" some  tracks may not make sense ( to you o)but we get it! and like it!

I dont think we should take it all out this way. Call a spade a spade and "walk-on-by". Dr. Abati, a brilliant fellow and champion of objective journalism must've written, without slight, his perception of modern, Nigerian sounds. what we need acknowledge like Banky W reportedly did, is politely correct his mindset with profound insights and examplars to follow.

Honestly, impressed even still he listened and studied the lyrics of the songs he crictisized. Stay real peeps!
