Buying Stocks Online

I want to buy stocks online from U.S and U.K based company. Can anyone tell me which online brokerage company is good such as scottrade, TD Ameritrade. Scottrade is asking for $500 but for me that is too much as of right now, so does anyone know any company that is much cheaper.
