Armed robbery cases are more pronounced in seven of the 36 states, it was learnt yesterday.

The states are Oyo, Imo, Ogun, Kano, Cross River, Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The crime figures, which are contained in the 2008 Report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), are based on cases reported to the police as at the end of 2007.

The breakdown of the armed robbery cases in the seven states, as at 2007 ending, is as follows: Oyo (224); FCT (172); Imo (176); Rivers (145); Cross River (137); Kano (108); and Ogun (107).

But while Lagos State recorded a drastic fall in armed robbery cases from 300 to 70, eight states had less than 28 armed robbery incidents.

The states are: Gombe(27); Benue(27); Plateau(26); Kwara(25); Sokoto(24); Jigawa(16); Kebbi(20); and Yobe(20).

The ratings of others are: Abia(89); Adamawa(96); Akwa Ibom(88); Anambra(96); Bauchi(41); Bayelsa(52); Borno(41); Delta(63); Ebonyi(51); and Edo(79).

Others are Ekiti(85); Kaduna(40); Katsina(31); Kogi(41); Nasarawa(36); Niger(32); Ondo(58); Osun(51); Taraba(80);

Although it could not be ascertained why the 2007 figure for Enugu State was not listed, a source said: "we had 44 cases for the state as at 2006."

The source in the NBS, who spoke in confidence with The Nation, said the figures are "the current official records/data which any institution or person could work with."

"We based our statistics on the five-year data provided by the Nigeria Police Force and the period in question had covered 2003 to 2007 for comparison. But the latest figure will be that of 2007 which we have produced as a report that is already in circulation in government and public.

"We got far-reaching statistics from the police including the numbers of persons arrested; those prosecuted for robbery; suspects awaiting trial; civilians killed by armed robbers; armed robbers killed by the police; the injured robbers; and cases pending investigation.

"The statistics is not meant to ridicule any state but it will assist those with high crime rates to improve on their security network. For the police in particular, it would allow them to take stock and strengthen their operation in flash-points," the source added.

The report said: "The Data on public order are sourced from the Nigeria Police Force. They cover crimes, road accident cases and casualties, armed robbery cases and involvement, vehicles stolen and recovered, court cases, juvenile cases and bank frauds."

The report identified Jigawa and Kogi states as the least poor states. Others are Kebbi, Kwara, Yobe and Bauchi.

It states: "The poverty incidence by state reveals the differences in the well-being of the people across the states.

"For example, Jigawa has the highest poverty incidence (91 per cent), while Oyo State has the lowest (21 per cent). In addition, the first 11 states with the highest poverty incidence are from the North. As for the depth and severity, Kogi ranks highest, while Oyo has the lowest.

"The likely reasons for high poverty levels in Jigawa and Kogi are heavy reliance on agriculture, high level of unemployment and low level of human capital development.

"On the other hand, the low poverty incidence recorded for Oyo is basically from the lower cost of living when compared to other states of the country. Food prices, transportation fares and accommodation rents are relatively low in Oyo State, including Ibadan, the capital."

I don't know how true these numbers are, for Lagos State to have only 70 armed robbery? I can understand Oyo state, there have been an increase in crime in the state and you read about it in Newspaper.

The Osun State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has arrested four persons, who were suspected to have been using police and army uniforms to rob innocent citizens.



The suspects, who looked strange in the oversize uniforms were later handed over to the Osun State Police Command, for further investigations and prosecution.


They were said to have been intercepted at Osu junction, on the Ilesha/Akure expressway.


Parading the suspects recently before journalists at the Osun State Police command headquarters in Osogbo, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. John Moronike explained that confessional statements by the suspects indicated that they extended their nefarious activities to Oyo, Kwara and Ondo states, before nemesis caught up with them.


He disclosed that they were apprehended by the NDLEA operatives, who were on stop-and-search duty.


The CP alleged that after successful robbery operations, the suspects usually took their loot to Lagos and other neighboring states for sale. He also alleged that the suspects usually wore police and army uniforms to dispossess people of their property at the Osu-Ife-Ipetumodu junction axis of Ibadan/Ilesha expressway.


Bubble burst when the bus they were traveling in from Akure, Ondo State, was flagged down by a team of NDLEA operatives on duty.

The names of the suspects were given as, Murtala Olugbenga, 25, Elijah Bamjuro, 22, Cosmos Oloba, 25, and Shedeah Emmjebor, 25.


Recovered from them were, locally made pistol, cutlasses, handsets, police and army uniforms.

Moronike also narrated how a man was nabbed with human skull in his possession. He was arrested at Ifewara, in Ife South Local Government Area of the state.

The 27 years old Iranade Olaoye, also described by the police as an armed robber, was said to have hidden the dry human skull in the roof of his house.


Nemesis caught up with him when somebody reported to the police that he was encroaching on his property and threatening to kill him.


It was when policemen went for his arrest that they discovered the human skull. Three guns, live cartridges and charms were also recovered from him.


Moronike explained that the command also nabbed members of a syndicate, which specialized in printing and circulating fake currency notes. Fake N52, 000 currency notes in N1000 and N500, denominations were recovered from them.

According to him, the syndicate had been circulating the fake currency notes in Abuja, Oyo, Delta, Kwara and Lagos states.


He gave the names of the suspects as, Sunday Marcus, Temitope Oyebani, Saheed Ibiyemi and Uche Obi. He told Daily Sun that the suspects would appear in court soon.

what do u expect from a pdp led govt when all they do is import arms into the country just to manipulate elections and never cared about the where about of the arms as soon as they win.
we are enjoying the devidends of the pdp led democracy in nigeria as presented by the obj's do or die politics.
for lagos state, we can all agree that robberies are on the decrease as the govt is doing everything to combat crimes in the state. at least lagos is not a pdp state.

These are the statistics for only armed robberies for which "roger" wasn't collected.

Lawmakers ask robbers to declare temporary ceasefire

The Ogun State House of Assembly on Wednesday appealed to armed robbers operating in the state and neighbouring ones to suspend their activities in the light of the junior World Cup going on in the country.

The Assembly reminded the robbers that any of their operations during the period of the tournament will give the country a bad name, as several foreign visitors are in the country now. Ogun is one of the states hosting teams in the competition.

The lawmakers agreed to beg the bandits during deliberations on the floor of the House, at their Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta complex. A member, Edward Ayo Odugbesan had raised an alarm that the Isheri bridge, which links Ogun with Lagos State, has become a den of bandits.

Mr. Odugbesan said there is a need for the men of the underworld to suspend their operations in the interim, because of the on-going mundial. The Ijebu-Ode International Stadium is one of the centres being used for the competition.

“I want to appeal to the men of the underworld to suspend their actions and operations in the interim because of our foreign visitors currently in the state,” he said. “Then they can resume thereafter, because there is nowhere in the world where robbers and robberies could be stopped from their work.” He then called on his colleagues to support his call on the armed bandits to soft-pedal because the situation is becoming worrisome.

“If foreigners witness the robbers’ attacks at this point, it would send a bad signal to other nations,” he said.


Police wake up

Reacting to Mr. Odugbesan’s call, the Speaker, Tunji Egbetokun, called on the police leadership to intensify efforts in ensuring that security is maintained in the state.

“I want to use the opportunity to call on the police to intensify efforts in checkmating criminals. They should please not relent in the efforts,” he said.

In a related development, the Assembly ordered the head of the Local Government Administration of Obafemi-Owode to appear before it next Wednesday for clarification on the budget and expenditure of the council. The local government official was said to have dodged previous invitations over the past three months – a development which the Assembly faulted at its session yesterday.

The lawmakers, therefore, directed the Clerk of the House, Demola Badejo, to write the official on the matter and direct him to report before it.
