The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) is actually an improvement on the Bpharm degree and was made to address some of the challenges facing the profession as well as keeping up with advancements in patient care as obtainable in more developed countries.

In fact, at undergraduate level, the curriculum of both is pretty much the same until the fourth year or so where PharmD begins to place greater emphasis on the clinical aspects of patient care--pharmaceutical care, which is essentially the backbone of the degree.

Topics such as therapeutic drug monitoring, the pharmaceutical care process, ADR management are, unlike in the Bpharm programm, treated in greater depth, especially in the final 6th year--yes, the pharm D is actually a six-year program.

In addition, students undergo clinical rotation in various hospital, similar to what the medical doctors undergo, only in our case, we are more concerned with current drug therapy the patient is on with a view to making possible recommendations to the doctor.

In more developed countries, they are usually referred to as Doctor this or doctor that.

Oh, thanks. Now, only Uniben awards Pharm.D but if I with B.Pharm and 'you' with PharmD were employed on the same day, does your 'certy' places you above me? I read about how the Nigerian 'Doctors' objected the PharmD, it's sad- I can say, they're literates but not educated.
Re: Pharmacists And Pharmaceutical Aspirants by muyoto: 9:17pm On Jan 23, 2012
At present both degrees are on the same level: conhess 9 in federal establishments.

as for the objection by doctors, the truth of the matter is that most of the opposition to the degree came, very, very sadly indeed, from within the professionangry angry angry Of worthy mention is a renowned professor of pharmacology at Unilag who was so uncompromising and vocal in his resistance to the degree that I believe affected the progress of the its implementation for some time. But for the truly commendable efforts of scholars like Professors Okahamfe, Obianu (now rtd), and many others at Uniben, I'm not sure that it would have seen the light of day.

the doctors that oppose it really don't know what its about. they felt it was an attempt to 'usurp their authority' (??). that's not true.

I'm sure it would be one of these: uniport, delsu or igbinedion. All those are not accredited yet they keep on admitting students for pharmacy program. I pity those students. @mod, great job you're doin.

^ Thanks.

I wonder why the NUC is turning a blind eye?

Found out its Uniport. S/he is better off writing another jamb for Elect, in case switching to Geology doesnt work out as planned.

Is NUC planning to accreditate more universities, btw?

Until dey r accreditated, dey cant move forward. MADONNA started churning out pharmacy graduates in 2007 but they were not inducted and thus not awarded d B.Pharm certificate till 2011 when she was accreditated.

Sorry I've not been on NL for some time.

As regards the interview, I don't think you have anything to worry about especially as it relates to pharmacy practise. Their questions are usually elementary and straight forward (eg classes of antihypertensives and example of each)

You might however, want read up some current affairs. . . eg current minister of so and so. Some centres, eg UBTH, are also known to include teasers, not related to pharmacy, which are aimed at gauging your critical thinking skills.

The competition at Abuja is pretty stiff, but I'm sure you'll scale through. All the best!  smiley

I know couple of retail pharmacist. They are doing pretty well. Except your taste is too high, you won't regret bein one. I understand the type of arrangement your relative is making. . .
Re: Pharmacists And Pharmaceutical Aspirants by muyoto: 10:24pm On Feb 08, 2012
@dan_dollar, though I'm not currently in the retail business, I guess I can share one or two points from my little knowledge. . .

I would say apart from telecoms and perhaps oil industry, there no other as lucrative as the pharmaceutical industry, and by extension, retail/community outlets. . .that takes care of the first part of your question.

Note that since you are not a pharmacist, you cannot operate a retail pharmacy outlet, unless you are able to get a qualified pharmacist to run the business whose practicing licence will be used to register the premises. I suppose that's where your relative who you say is a pharmacist comes in, but note he will only be given the full license after he's through with internship.

If you do get a qualified pharmacist, there are many factors however that will determine how successful your own outlet will be.

This entails undertaking, as it is with all business, a comprehensive feasibility study. Paramount is the location of the outlet, which is directly related to the type of clientele and the ease with which you will be able to source your commodities.

The amount of capital at your disposal is also another crucial factor, as this will determine the type of commodities you will stock.

Equally related the number and quality of competitors in the locality you intend to situate the business. By quality I mean the nature of other outlets in the vicinity: are they patent stores, small scale pharmacies or established retail outlets.

this is by no means exhaustive, it just to give a idea. . . wink
Re: Pharmacists And Pharmaceutical Aspirants by muyoto: 10:48pm On Feb 08, 2012
Lastly, if you need a figure to work with, to start up a standard retail outlet from scratch will require anything from 700k to well over a million.
