whether this will unseat MS is better left for time to decide. nonetheless, it is a welcome change at least for once in many years.
That is like saying some new trendy fizzy drink would unseat Cocacola. in the near future. . . . Highly improbable if you ask me. lol.

Really Chrome OS is just linux with an X-windows wrapper in the form of an Internet Browser, and the catch. . .? it is free plus it will show the way to others. Expect bigger competitions and at any rate, it's a win-win situation for end users. Will it be a companion to full PCs or replacement? We shall know in time. There is a beta version now, no?

Whether Google Chrome is a new Linux OS or not, the success lies in the branding, not in the technical "techspeak" we programmers understand. The "Google" brand is made!

The google brand is made. and everything they touch turns into gold, right? i guess that's why Orkut is more popular than Facebook, and Jaiku is doing better than Twitter, or Chrome, which has its link in everybody's face on the google homepage and on youtube is fast becoming the most popular browser on earth. DUH!

yea right, MS has just got a better competitor in the system. The likes of netscape were not of any match with MS since MS is the major player and dictates whatever happens. But with google, I bet its a "Hello world" call. Google Inc. have proven their mettle so far, going by their products, dominating each department they step in. To me, I dont expect anything different from their track record, Google Inc. rule their world!

All the talk about competition will just not cut it. Bing can threaten Google as far as search engine go but I don't see any OS cloud, fire or earth-based threatening windows. MS never ever slows down and even if they still get heavy fines for the monopoly, it's still a monopoly. Linux is supposed to be Windows's main competition for the netbook market but is slowly losing the market to xp not even Windows 7. It's nice that there is competition but there'll be no change to the status quo.

Well, If Google moves quickly enough AND are well funded, THEN maybe in 10 years time they will come up with an OS that can actually compete with Windows 95.
Its just a flash, IF you need a real OS, go for Microsoft. Google OS wont be any better than what you can get from your phone

My dear, it is not a matter of years or funding when it comes to developing a quality product, especially technological products. The most important elements are tow-fold: An outstanding idea mixed with plenty of creativity and uniqueness, and secondly, the right people to implement these ideas. Google Corporation is just made! Even the funding you are talking about, dey get am boku, plenty! plenty!I just detect a little rigidity in most of us on this thread, else, I really don't see any need for furthur argument. N.B: You say that their OS is just flash hunh? Let me repeat it to you like I said earlier on on this thread: the major population of PC users don't bother about the technicality behind a product. They love the brand! The brand, the brand! Let's catch this, please? Personally, I'm in love with the Google brand, and I am sure (without any offense meant at anyone at all) that most of us here prefer to use "Google Search" to other search engines. Because we just love it! Besides "Google Search" is damn good! Thank you once more for this opportunity,

Chrome OS? Wrap and re-wrap linux and it's still linux. . . Not for the everyday user. Linux Net books didn't quite make off the starting blocks. Windows 7 is going to blow everything out of the water. It's shaping up to be the biggest ever OS release ever. Microsofts own servers crashed under demand. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8151342.stm

i dont know at what point you people will realize that chrome OS is a very light OS designed with netbooks/nettops in mind and not to directly challenge windows 7 which is not even offered on netbooks.
its main rivals are moblin and other lightweight linux flavors geared for netbooks.
and fo those confusing things and mixing them up, there is no seperate google OS called "web OS' besides the Palm OS running on the Pre. the google web OS is the chrome OS; its web OS because chrome OS is essentially a browser that can stand on its own. dont expect to start running Maya or Renderman on it.
its geared for internet users (social networking, surfing, emailing, blogging, etc).
stop comparing windows 7 with chrome OS. they are not on the same level. win 7's ONLY worthy competitor is Mac OS X.

light weight or not, what matters most is the availability of app softwares under its platform,

I'd even say that what the world needs right now is lighter technology. Believe me guys, I believe quite soon, we are gonna a computer we can fold as neatly as my handkerchief! I know, and believe so. Maybe my company will take care of that.
But the lighter the OS becomes, the better for it we'll be. That is another reason I love Google Corporation: they are very trendy. They flow with the times. Bet me, younger generations might become the major users of "Google Chrome" OS.

the fact that windows apps are all over the place and you can hardly find linux and other apps is another indication of MS dominance of the market which google is trying to break.

Na wah for una o! Una really sabi argue no be smaaaallllll,
See, even Windows doesn't ordinarily run on a linux. You have to use a middleware such as "Wine", or a virtualization tool called "VMware" to run Windows apps on a Linux machine. You can google them up to download them for your curiosity's sake. So why must you crucify Google OS so quickly and harshly?
I trust they have this issue of cross-platform operability of softwares in mind before they release their OS into the market. So, guys, shorei o!Chou, :-)
