That is me working on my two laptops, one of them a Dell Latitude Cpi, Intel PIII 1.1GHz, 15" SVGA, 4:3 LCD screen, 20GB HDD, DVD/CD-RW combo drive, 256MB RAM, external Orinoco wireless 802.11 b/g wireless LAN card, running Windows XP at the moment. I use it as a testing computer for all sorts, and when I'm through with my current school work, I'll remove the WinXP in order to give AIX a proper run out. After that it would be Vista RC1.

The laptop that you see me actually handling in the picture (the one I mentioned is the one on the far side) is my main everyday laptop from which I am typing this now is an Acer Aspire 1640Z, Pentium M 1.7Ghz, 15.4 WXGA, 16:9 TFT screen, 80 GB HDD, DVD-Dual double layer drive, 1GB DDR2, integrated blue tooth and 802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN support, running Ubuntu Edgy Eft.

What you can't see in the picture is the desktop computer, Koala Performance Computer, Intel Centrino Core Duo 1.7GHz, 17" Phillips TFT Flat screen monitor, 240 GB HDD, DVD+/-RW, 2GB DDR running Ubuntu Edgy Eft with 6 other operating systems within a VMware environment as shown below:

The kind of systems you can only drool at, so that I didn't come here to join in a pissing contest doesn't mean that I lack.

The Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor was first made for the desktop computer. The technology was only recently ported to laptops.

Need articles? When I return from school.

I forgot. I'm a student. Not a businessman, I don't leave any computers at the work place. They are all at home.

THERE YOU GO!!! you just made my point. i clearly stated that a laptop processor for a desktop does'nt cut it. obviously the  Computer manufacturers founded it uunsuitablefor desktops, therefore the migration. Also thank you for the offer for articles, i regret, i have to decline, , i like doing things for myself. Seems strange that a student would have THREE computers. Grin  The valance/blinds are typical of the one in some business place, used to block sunlight. why would you have that at HOME? not saying you're lying, just pointing to ininconsistencies|_
As it relates to education, you are the one that is currently being educated( i think Cheesy) you make a poor example of what it means to be "educated".

Lastly my friend, i am sure you will want to continue this verbal attrition, but i can guarantee you will Grin lose Grin Grin

Your lack of knowledge of the history of Intel chips is astonishing. With the exception of the Pentium M series which was specifically made for laptops from the onset, every other Intel processor comes out on the desktop first before being ported to laptops (not migrated, or do I have to sell you a dictionary?)

Knowledge is about information sharing. The oldest man in any setting can learn something from the youngest if he is so disposed. Refusing the links to articles that would obviously educate you shows where you stand on the issue of education and/or the lack of it. That you think a Masters student with four years of work experience behind him can't afford to have three computers shows the depth of your mind. Even an ant would be hard pressed to drown in it.

Like I said earlier, I am currently doing my Masters in Computer Networks. For your information, a Masters degree is awarded to someone who has completed his graduate study and can then be said to be a total Master of the subject in question. At the risk of sounding boastful, I am one of four students thus far in my class who have been asked to continue on to a doctorate. Don't give me crap about you knowing stuff about computers when you obviously know next to nothing.

I am ashamed to have gotten into an argument with you. There are a lot more open minds on this forum, and as is usual. I will seek them out.

From my end, this conversation is terminated.

OK guys, put your knowledge to some good use and help a brother out. I am about to register for a graduate program (MBA) in the US. I want to buy a laptop but apart from normal school work, I am supposed to take some online courses. I also intend to use the laptop to communicate (+ voice and video) with my family back home in naija. what cost effective brand/configuration of laptop would you guys recommend?

Hey @chxta!

What uni are u doing your masters in, what are their entry requirements, etc etc.
Thanks!

My specs:

2 CPU's connected via ethernet to a single monitor.

the cpu's are called SKYHOOK and GHOSTPHOENIX. Ghost is the dvd-burning, ripping, downloading, browsing and coding machine, while SKYHOOK is the power machine for video encoding and gaming.

specs:

skyhook:

Pentium 630 3.00GHZ hyperthreading, 2megs l2cache, 800mhz fsb, EMT64+virtualization enabled. Prescott core
1 GB 333MHZ DDR memory
ATI RADEON X800 XT with 256 Megs GDDR3 video RAM, AGP 8x, shader model 2.0, TV-out (excellent feature!), TV-capture enabled.
2 HDDS, maxtor 120GB, seagate 250GB (370 jigga total)
Mercury 58x CD-ROM (to fulfill all righteousness)
Microsoft wireless keyboard
IBM wired optical mouse (the very best. And yes I have used the logitech stuff)
uCOM dual analogue usb gamepad (now usually replaced with the awesome xbox 360 wired gamepad)
Belkin USB dongle (cheapest and the best for remotely controlling your windows media player with your phone)
Labtec 2.1 speaker system (good enough, low distortion, thank Gawd)

GHOSTPHOENIX:
Pentium 4 2.26MHZ, 533MHZ FSB, Northwood core
512MB 266MHZ DDR ram
S3 Savage craptacular nonsense video with ridiculously low and useless shared memory that I don't care about
same HDD config as skyhook (370 gigs total)
LG super-multi DVD recorder (NOw you talking! reads/writes dvds/dvdrw's of all specs (+,-,RAM). don't know if it does dual layer, sha. hardly any dvd9's in Nigeria, or can someone help out?
no mouse (SHOCK!!!!!!)
one nameless nonsense keyboard (to press enter during startup)
Starcomms L3000 terminal (for di hintanet)

both machines use USB 2.0 and run windows XP pro. SP2 for skyhook, SP1a with patches for Ghostphoenix. Hooked together with linksys 8-port digital switch. Proteketd by belkin surgemaster and Chinese Stablizer (no ups. Yes I suck. I know)

bye bye

This is a male dominated discusion 4 obvious reasons Grin ;
Notice how the initator insists that the config should be specifiedd
Men discuss the size and capacity of their equipment.
Ladies just go for functionality.
I use  a functiona laptop and a desktop  and a multilinks line
