Skype, "free Internet telephony that just works".
« on: May 25, 2005, 03:27 PM »

Skype is "free Internet telephony that just works".

It is a simple bit of software. It’ll let you make free calls to your friends all over the world. And It’s free

Download, plug in your headset, speakers or USB phone and start calling your friends. The calls have excellent sound quality and are highly secure with end-to-end encryption.

You can also send instant messages with Skype.

Let me know what you think!

Exago, thanks a million for introducing us to Skype.

It works very well in a VSAT network when you have extra bandwidth.  However, I have not been able to get it to work well on the Multilinks Internet Network.  Most of our FIxed Wireless ISPs have an explicit ban on the use of VoIP, and I definitely think the ban is in order!

Has anyone on the forum experienced some success with Skype?  Tell us about it; let us know what sort of Internet connection you're on.

Another Skype feature is SkypeOut which is supposed to make it easy for people to make international calls.  However, you need an International credit card.  Very few people in Nigeria have acccess to such cards!

Have you had success with Skype or SkypeOut?  Please, let us know about it!

We use a radio network and it worked well on it.

I agree that Skype is a nice alternative to conventional phone networks, but there is a problem as Seun said.  Many cybercafes have downloaded it but I haven't seen one that actually works.

I even got an idea at one time to start a small biz using DirectTV technology to access the net and then use the skype network to undercut other international call providers

It didn't work.

Luckily, it was not my money and the guy turned the thing into a match viewing centre.

@exago, I assume the network uses licensed radio frequencies or NCC might get you. Well most of us use VSAT networks so that is no comfort. Huh

Why can't NCC simply legalise VoIP? several African countries have done so.

NCC is about to legalise VOIP as they have invited stakeholders to submit their comments and contributions. NCC is of the view that the services should be regulated not the technology. If technology is regulated then we will never get there because of delays and bureaucracy.

I think the NCC is not against it but the reason operators are restricting their subscribers is because of the conditions attached to their interconnectivity with NITEL. NITEL frowns at VOIP like all other fixed operators worldwide and they are losing the war.

Then if the technology is not illegal Nitel have no right telling operators what they can do with their interconnection on Nitel's gateway.

I think its absurd Nitel on one hand 'frowning' on Voip but at the same time can't increase its phone lines beyond the paltry 500,000+ lines it currently stand.

The reason they frown at it is because the technology though legal is used for illegal purposes to dump traffic and carry international traffic which is outside the scope of their licences at ridiculous prices. ISPs for instance have no right to carry voice traffic but they do. Fixed line operators are also not allowed to terminate international traffic into the country but all these illegal businesses are conducted through VOIP.

Fixed line operators worldwide suffer the same fate as it affects their volume of international traffic.

The question is why can't they join so as force these 'so called illegals' out of the market?

You are obviously for big corporations since you deem Voip operators' illegals'.

Anyway the voice ISP carry is over Internet Protocol which I believe is within their legal domain to do. Its like sending picture or any other data for that matter.

What you should have advised why aren't they in the business?

I recently read an article in Business week predicting the end of big telcos because they can't/wouldn't adjust to new tech.

ISPs are licensed to carry data and not voice. Anyway the unified licence coming out soon will fix some of these problems.

Thing is VOIP traffic is no different to say you copying a picture from a website or downloading a picture, at a hardware layer it's all the same thing (1 and 0's) so I see no reason why it should take any time if all to get it legalized.

Yahoo messenger also has a voice call facility which I don't think most people know about. In the UK, British Telecoms BT have teamed up with Yahoo to introduce a yahoo messenger which allows you to make phone calls to land lines and mobiles however, the cost of your calls will be reflected on your monthly BT bill see http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com/allnew/btcom.html for further details.

I think this shows a large corporation, aknowledging that there is a new threat to its existence and trying to stay ahead of the game. We shall all see how VOIP goes. The lawsuits and whatnot didnt stop P2P or downloading of music and movies from the net and I really can't see how the large corporations can stop this.

You can say that because u have not started experiencing the problems people face with the EVDO card. The starcomms guys deactivate u even when your payment is not due and then it takes them forever to reactivate u when u call and rectify the error. You eventually go to the office so u can sort the problem only for u to get to the their office and see the crowd u get see find only at Oshodi market
