Sometimes i wonder what it would have been, if i did not know how to read or write. But many people today are illiterate have u ask urself how these people feel living in a civilized world and lacking behind greatly. Ask urself if u are an illiterate how will u feel? Think and let us know your mind, God Bless Nigeria
If I dont know how to read or write, I may feel a little bad but If I have skills that people can value and that can earn me great respect in the society, then I will not not bother. For instance if I can play football like Okocha or sing song like Michael Jackson and I dont have university degree, then there is no cause to feel disturbed.

Every body has the right to be llitrate, and if you happen to be illitarate, you and the govt have a share in the blame. In europe if you miss school for a day without an escuse you will have 2 angry looking police men ringing your door bell and asking serious questions illitracy is a big problem to the society

I heard Bill Gate was a college drop-out. Is is true? If it is, have some of us made a grave mistake going to college?

I wouldn't feel bad, in as much as it is not my own making, then i'll live with it.
I'd rather be a modest 'illiterate'.

Seriously if you think illiterates feel cheated then you have to think again, in fact on the contrary the feel superior. they think its you who got cheated by wasting your time reading all the nonsense you did. As an illiterate, you are so narrow minded there is no space to think. just act

Illiterate? Hmmm. . . I know some people do suffer from being dislecsic (or how do you spell that.?) Im a victime myself when it comes to numbers and I hate it, Seriously its like throughout my years of studying and being force to study some numbers in education, I feel hopeless and Im the only one whom always had to stay back after school just to get that in my thick skull and even after that, I still dont have a damn clue.
So yeah, I felt useless and hopeless

Many nigerians don't know what illiteracy means. They think the fact that they got some certificate from a university makes them literate.
Literacy is not an acheivement, rather it's a state of the mind.

I probably won't feel adequate at some gatherings of the lettered and well- spoken. However, allow me to pose a question, if I am able to read and write only the Yoruba language? Does it change anything? Am I still illiterate? Now, illiteracy means the inability to read or write. Read or write what if I may ask? The English language? Can the average English man read or write Igbo? Does it make him, temporarily an illiterate in the Igbo sense of it? Life is all about perspectives. It is the way we view things, and our views are coloured my a myriads of factors known and subconscious. However, in modern times, economic power dictates the language of currency and of course the lingua-franca of the world! So we must take TOEFL because we seek the golden fleece in the land that flows with milk and honey, and in that land, illiteracy is a SIN! Well said. . . . .the definition of illietracy by nigerians is a sign of colonisation.

If you were living in the United States, for one thing you wouldn't be able to vote.
there is no current law in the US that bars people from voting in regards to literacy. 130 years ago there was but it has long since been repealed.

@post. Illiteracy doesn't only mean the inability to read & write; it may also mean the other way round like being to understand things around u mentally, spiritually, etc. Just because one does not how to read & write doesn't mean he or she cannot be a better person. @topic. Well, at first I will feel miserable about my self :-[but at the same time, I will see it as a challenge & an opportunity to become a greater person!

We are not saying illiteracy is a sin but sometime being an illiterate, one will be deprive of some important things in life, eg their right. That does not mean that the educated once are in any way better off. Remember literate or illiteracy does not guarantee wealth, knownlege or visa to heaven. It is just important but not necessary
