Well, don't feel bad sis.  Granted it's a man's world, there is nothing wrong in being in whatever male-dominated field you may find yourself.  In fact, you should use it to not only encourage fellow females to the fold but to prove a point that what a man can do, a woman can do better (well, in some cases Wink)

At my current employer's, there are 25 of us in the department.  Only 1 of them is a woman.  We call her our "mother".  Very smart and indeed acts like a mom when it comes to helping those who need help in coding or say, settling disputes amongst co-workers.

Keep the faith baby girl!!  Cool

Definitely not, you need to differentiate web designer and web developer. I know too many female web designers (mostly called interactive designers). Infact at work we have alot more female designers than male (myself included).

Generally, application development is a male dominated field. But you still see quite a lot of women in the field, at least here in the states. Now, if we are talking about just plain web designers, there may be quite a few women, I just don't know. The term web designer is really not common on this end. Assuming we are talking about people that just design web pages and do not do any kind of programming, they are usually considered graphic designers/artists or so.

I guess we just need to clarify if we are talking about web application development (Java/VB, JSP, Servlets, J2EE, struts). or just web designing using HTML, web tools, etc. Obviously for the former you need knowledge of hard-core programming, while you don't for the latter.

Hey, I'm a web designer, among other thiings, (which in include but are notl imited to graphics, animation, and illustration) but i agree, not many chicks. Many of them arent even interested in anything IT, to be truthful, even those that were in my computer science department. But ive never felt intimidated. in fact, i feel like there is a need for more of us, cos most  of the male designers arent that wonderful (SERIOUSLY), they're all good at the coding thing but most of them just take uo design ing as a means to an end. I believe designing, either male or female should be done by a genuinely inspired artist, no?

You're a good designer, because you've invested your time into it.  Other ladies may simply be uninterested.

Actually there are significantly more female graphic designers then web developers so you shouldn't have too much of problem finding other female graphic designers. The office where I worked before I moved back had 43 coders of which 2 (including me) were female. And had 3 out of about 5 graphic designers that were girls.

I think part of the problem is the long hours (at least with development), some of the guys at my former office would actually stay all night, but my then boyfriend (now husband) wasn't having any of that, luckily I could work from home though so I was able to keep up.  Grin

I was about asking the same question when i saw your thread, Gamine.

I program with Visual Studio.Net language( VB.NET) and MicroSoft SQL as database server and i do pretty well in GUI designing.

I know its more of a man's world, but ever since i had a feel of it during my Industrial Attachment, it's being interesting all the way.

Don't you worry, cos you've got a partner here.

Do have a lovely day.

Well, you don't have to feel strange for being a lady developer or designer in a man's world (so to speak.) Just have confidence in yourself with shoulder up that what a man can do a woman can also do and even better, don't be intimidated at all,

Like me, I am a now a senior developer with over 13 years of experience, currently working with MS .net tech (c# and vb.net) in the US with a top tech company and fed contracts and also my own company.  I started in Nigeria and I told myself there is no looking back, I don't care if I am the only woman doing it and I thank God for where I am today with very big bucks in $$$,$$$ I tell you, I am never intimidated, It takes a lot of study and training which I don't mind and my husband and children are very supportive and I am only in my 30s.

So way to go sisters. I just which to encourage someone out there. Please don't look back. Peace!

actually, women would make very [even better ] web designer because of their instinctive deeper appreciation of beauty and their simultaneous ability to think allogically, switching off thier logical mindsets to evaluate a thing,
but one thing i see in women is their susceptibility,
how many women dont wanna learn how to code, or become programmers but a jeer puts them off,
or they see a text book full of 'ugly' looking code and back off,
   programming , is logic - 70 or 80 %
any mind  in any head can be taught to think logically,
hence women can be taught to think and solve problems 'logically'
and express this via 'code'
  any woman can do this,
but will they be able to bypass the 'fear complex'?

Onydchic & Gamine, good to see you ladies speaking up for your cause. However, focus not on how many females you have alongside but work hard to prove you deserve recognition & respect for your own work

P.S: If your skills are really good, my firm is always recruiting (keyword really good). send your portfolio (web/print design, & animation) to femi@bluelab.biz

well, i do not think brain have gender but it is quite sad that the women have proven too weak to stand on both feets. none the less it is not a matter of laughter but we all gat to encourage them. remeber, training a woman is like training a whole generation.

Gamine, I am 6 years web developer with skilled graphic designing and programming in PHP, XML, Flash Actionscripting, Javascript, CSS, and HTML working at home on the contract jobs only. I am only female who happens to be deaf in the 40s.

There are lot of female web developers, designers, and programmers in the USA making lot of money.

@Gamine
What is really the point or the matter ?Are you feeling lonely or lost in oblivion because you are a lady that designs websites.

Girlfriend let me be frank with you,you stand at a vantage point with an advantage over Male web designers and programmers, because as a lady you stand the chance to attract more attention than us guys when you go to tender for web jobs.

You serve both as a Marketer and Developer for your company.

Girlfriend you are in the right profession don't let anybody tell you otherwise, just ensure you sharpen your skills and use your female factor to your advantage, but we wise.

Cheers

Lots of women are artistic; web design is not that different from fashion design; it's all aesthetics.
