3. Split ends problem, what do I do? I know you'd say "cut it", but how do I prevent it next time lordy lordy. I'm waiting for the answer to this question as well o. basically the only way to prevent it is to moisturize 24/7. but who really has time for that?? u get split ends too? so far i don't have much split ends (they disappear in the summer and humid weather for the obvious reasons) but come winter time n dry weather, i'm sure they'll come around. lol @op does oil sealing really work? as in your hair will feel moist for a long time?? i want to try that if it works any simple fix/ magical potion or trick to keep away split ends? i'm all ears

Sealing with oil works! When you moisture, you have to seal with some sort of oil for the moisture to stick. @ blue, where are you located?
I go to the salon, but I take my own products, and tell them what I want, and how to do it! I can do it myself, but time will not permit me.
I don't use Gels! I use Pomades though, Aveeda has a really nice one!
Unfortunately, I can not recommend any products like Pink Oil; dark and lovely, etc, because they sucks! DO NOT WORK! most of these products are out there to exploit women, black women expecially, its not going to work! Do your research! Buy online, read ingredients!
Its easy to mositurize everyday, you can do it at night! to prevent split ends, do the "baggie" - ~ Baggie for your ends and your hair:~ I also baggie my hair to keep it healthy and strong. this how I baggie: I put my hair in a ponytail, I put CFCG and seal with oil (evoo) and I put it in a bag(sandwich bag) and wrap a scrunchie around it. (I will post pic if you want to see) I sleep with the baggie, in the morning you wake up with nice, soft, easy to manage hair.
you can also baggie your whole head if you want, I do not, but some pple do. its just a matter of putting in moisturizer, seal with oil, and put a shower cap on it, let it sit overnight or a couple of hours. no heat.
if you do not have a protective style, you should baggie daily or at least 3 times a week.
There is no miracle product, there are regimes, things to do; small lifestyle changes to help your overall health!
I think even if you wash and condition your hair every three days, its enough to have it grow! Moisture is key!

@Laniks Thank God i found this thread. I am the hairy type from birth but recently i don't know whats happenning to my hair. I have been using Dark and Lovely for the past 5 years and it relaxes my hair well without any burns (i have a very delicate scalp) When ever i style my hair (using rollers), it looks good but the next day is like i was not in the saloon. And i have realised dat i have breakages when i comb my hair( even though i trim the edge of my hair after every retouching). I am posting along the pic of the hair product i currently use. Please can u advise me of what to do and use to give my hair that thick and rich texture it use to have before? NB I have also used motions products before( but not the relaxer)

Plastic caps generate heat -- that's why its good. you can wear the plastic caps and wear a silk scarf over it! You can also just do the plastic cap thing for about 1 hour and take it out.
washing your hair is good! Water is good for you! I wash almost every 2-3 days, and do a deep conditioned every weekend!
the products you use to wash is the problem -- to keep your hair looking nice and flowing, you have to wash it!
I suggest using Nexxus( which I see at most drug stroes here) it has Sulfates but not enough to do damage! I hate sunsilk! I have probably use every product line, I highly recommend using Baking soda to wash once a week, if you are unable to get access to non sulfate products. This is really the best way to clean(clarify) your hair. I normally mix my baking soda with Glycerin
You can use Nexxus Conditioner and seal with Olive Oil. Or if you can get Glycerin (vegetable kind) and mix with your conditioner, that will be great!
Who has time to moisturize everyday? A person who care about the health of their hair will do it! its not hard,

My regime is: Deep conditioned once a week or two weeks(depending on time) the easiest way I find to deep condition is get home Friday night, apply Hair Mayo seal with olive oil(I have a jug of Olive oil at home as it also goes in my lotion, and several other things) wear a plastic cap, secure with a silk scarf-- wake up in the AM and wash the hair -. Do a final rinse with Apple Cider Vinegar(available at your local grocery store)
I normally let my hair airdry - which is an all day thing- so sat. or sun is perfect for me
Protein treatments every two to three months.
During the week, I co wash, wash the hair using conditioner only!
If I feel that my ends are brittle and dry, I do the baggie method.
I also use a supplement in the AM- I use Folic Acid - and One a day for women.
I wear extensions (sew-in's) as a protective style
@Tessy! Do you have a list of the ingredients in that product you posted?
If you are experiencing breakage it could be a couple of things: 1. Your Diet - I was using Garlic supplements when my hair was breaking really bad! It works -- I took the pills because I could not stand the smell of garlic in my foods.
2. Moisture is lacking! Are you deep conditioning?
3. What type of comb are you using to comb your hair?
4. Are you using heat every day? this will ultimately break your hair and leave it brittle. I use heat once a week - I use a ceramic iron -- rollers are great for your hair! You should roller set the hair if you want to keep your curls; or wrap it at night!

If you want to moisturise daily then sealing the tips before you go to bed is your best bet if your hair is not in any 'protective style'. Then deep condition every week , very important some people also have spray bottle of honey in water or a light oil or conditioner that they spray unto their hair during the day

Please tell me everything about sisterlocks. I have fairly long natural hair and I will like to try the sisterlocks The only style I do with my natual hair at the moment is the bantu knots out, all others are weaves. Is it true that I will have to cut off all my hair if i get fed up of sisterlocks?

@blue -- I don't conditioned daily because I really don't need it anymore, but when I did, I spray Curl Free curl Gold on my hair daily! My hair really loved it, I also deep conditioned weekly, and wore extensions(sew-in) as a protective style. Apparently, the vatica is not all that good, but not all that bad either. Could you tell me what to do to my front hair to make it grow? I am losing it daily and i don't know why.
I take fruits, vegetables and water and rarely braid my hair only wear weaveons occasionally so it can grow but it seems not to be working. Right now i have cornrows all in a bid to make it grow but i am not seeing any results. Is there any hair cream out there that works . Least i forget, my hair is breaking. What i mean is that when i comb it, i lose so much hair that i feel like crying.
Pls what can i do before i go completely bald.

You can achieve that afro style you're going for but it's really time and labour intensive. When your hair is still wet, use setting lotion etc in it and then get the smallest size of rollers possible, you need to pick out small pieces and then roll them on the rollers. The smaller the pieces and the rollers, the tighter your curls will look in your afro. My mom had relaxed hair in the 70s and this was how she did her massive afros in the pictures.
Or if you do cornrows e.g. like how you used to do to go to school in Naij, especially on wet, well-moisturized (use a leave in conditioner followed by an oil like coconut oil but u can use any oil you like; this will prevent frizz) hair but then don't leave your ends straight, roll the end of each cornrow on a small roller (you don't have to do this but if you don't you'll get curly hair and straight edges), and then let them dry overnight. (You could also do single braids like "calabar" instead of cornrows but you have to do many like @ least 20-25+ but it depends on your head size and hair thickness) When you loosen them in the morning (carefully) and fluff them and separate the hair and you'll get this:
(btw, the girl in the pic has relaxed 4a/b hair like African type and you can go to hairlistainc.com or the hairlista channel on youtube to see her step-by-step of how she does it)

What type of comb are you using to comb your hair? I think you should manipulate your hair less! If you are using a small tooth comb please switch to a larger one. Also, try not to comb/detangle your hair when its dry! Keep the hair moisturize. I think the strands are most likely weak and you need a protein treatment!
@tatase, I agree, I also suggest she does the 2-strand twist but I am not sure if she is interested!

there's a whole lot on protein treatment on the first page btw laniks my hair's practically stopped breaking! used break's over like oyinda suggested n the oil sealing bit after leaving some of the conditioner in my hair felt odd the first few times but my curls are soft and very very workable now i can run my fingers thru my whole hair (which is a lot, yes its growing!) and not pull an ugly face thanks a ton! still trying out different things your right u learn as u go

How often should hair be washed? (I'm talking about a black female's hair. I know most whites/latinas wash theirs everyday lol) Usually, I wash every week but now I'm hearing that's too much and it leads to breakage and stunts growth. how true is that?
Also, how often should I get a perm, I mean apply relaxer? I get a perm every 4 weeks, that is every month. But I haven't gotten one in almost 7-8 weeks now. Is that bad? does waiting longer make hair grow more? I noticed my hair grew though. I plan to perm it this weekend.
PS: Apologies if my questions have already been asked. didn't read previous pages. But answers would be appreciated.

go to the first page bt u should wash your hair at least once a week and at most 3 times a week i wash mine appx thrice a week but i alternate between co-wash n regular poo-wash from what ive learnt, the frequency of the wash doesnt necessarily lead to breakage, but the stripping of moisture so if u wash your hair everyday and can maintain a healthy amount of moisture. . . u should be good to go (im in no way an expert however) as to the perming, when i used to, ill wait like 6-8 weeks, noticed growth also the aim of perming is to relax the grown bit so its only natural u give your hair enough time to grow a substantial amount of hair to relax, else, u end up re-relaxing your ends which leads to weak brittle hair

THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT LACK OF MOISTURE IN HAIR IS TO LET YOUR HAIR AIR-DRY.

but then after it air dries, it becomes moisture-less again. lol i would say seal with oil while your hair is still damp. it will keep the moisture in longer and shampoo washing does strip the hair of moisture. that's why you have to use conditioner right after to replace the moisture. how long is your hair bluespice? u shampoo your hair so frequently my head will be tangle, dry city if i did that. lol
