Yea in deed. GTB rocks. Imagine a bank whose MasterCard does not give one access to shop online. Rather than give back the money after over two months of verification (normal period is 45 days) they insist i use the card for online transaction or withdraw the cash over the ATM. The ATM option will pay me in the local currency of the country (in this case - Naira) and at the current CBN rate. Now the rate is 153 but i bought the dollar at 165. Na by force? Is there no moral in dealing with clients anymore in the banking industry? Abeg una help me beg them to do the right thing and give me my money make i take do better thing rather than have them trade with my money.

It will appear the Nigerian factor is at play even here and the livelihood of many of us hangs in the balance! The former bank CEO’s are being treated like criminals and hounded and vilified in the press when people who should be treated as murderers like Babangida, Obasanjo, Pius Anyim, Ibori, Odili, Igbinideon, Dariye, Akume, et al are walking free. Murderers?! Yes! They STOLE public funds meant for drugs and to upgrade health facilities! Who can quantify the number of lives lost as a result? They pilfered monies meant for road construction and the result is the death traps we call roads! They stole public funds meant to finance the universities and now we have half trained teachers, professors and, worst of all, doctors and Lawyers! Do you have any idea the level of medical malpractice that goes unreported in Nigeria mainly because the victims are uneducated and do not even know they have recourse to the law. Wait, it gets worse! Those who know that they have recourse to the law and seek to exercise this right will get ill trained and unprofessional prosecutors whose advocacy skills are even worse than the defense team. Now factor in corrupt judges and magistrates and the conviction rates are…, you guessed it,…zilch! Now juxtapose these against the ‘crimes’ for which our Bank CEO’s are being crucified, namely bypassing prudential guidelines in allocating loans, insider trading and mismanagement of shareholders’ funds. These are bad enough but they are nothing when compared to mass murder! Moreover, the bad loans in question were advanced based on some market intelligence., analysis or predictions as as we are all aware, even the best financial analysts in Japan & the USA was unable to predict this recession. In Nigeria the NSE All Share index fell by more than 70% and Oil prices dropped by more than 200% is it not reasonable to expect that quite a number of the facilities disbursed in these sectors will become substandard. Today every plebeian is making spurious claims about unethical banking practices of these great entrepreneurs. Just the other day I heard saw one joker on national TV making a claim that some banks charge 'availability fee' before disbursing loans! I doubt that he owns more than a savings or salary account in any bank nor is he, any one he knows or his family & relatives, eligible for any bank loan otherwise it should be evident, even to his half baked knowledge, that such a claim is patently ridiculous!
Nigerians are being hoodwinked about the real motives for this whole drama and attention is being deliberately focused on these private citizens to detract from the government/EFCC’s unwillingness and inability to prosecute the real criminals.

Dr. Mrs Cecilia Ibru is a woman with a big heart, yet cannot harm a common fly. She is a real African woman, a mother extra ordinary,an entreprenuer yet no greedy. She gave a lead of life to so many people. She brought Oceanic Bank from the abiss to the forefront of a top financial supermarket.
He strategies was motherly, she never supported her daughters (marketers) to go hay wire all in the name of marketing, the male marketers was not brutalised either. It was peace all the way no body was ever sack like unfathomable target deposit, hmmm ask PHB,INTER, zenith may not sack but, All the marketers needed was to give her the contacts, all by her self, the cheque start rolling in.
She so much love the common man on the streeth that they can open an account even on Zero Balance when other Bank was alof. same industry where the guys in Ajose Adeogun height open a savings account for N50k minimum, hmmm banking is not for the poor masses. Mama gave loan to those small / micro business so that they can substain their family hence building the nation.
Mrs Ibru support for building of a better Nigeria was her only crime. What is Banking? sourcing deposit from the surplus and lending to the deficit sector at a premium. She did just that supported the real sector. Notore chemical is a fertiliser plant: Hence Mama supported this organisation so that there will be fertiliser for farmers. She played highly in the downstream sector of the petrolueum industry by fundalot of Farm Tank ask (RAHAMANIYYA). I thought she deserved a praise instead ,
The drama is only just unfolding. We are all human! even if there was a misjudgement. Assuming there was a wrong business decision. atleast one must be given a benefit of doubt, where on earth will you audit without a feed back, the next action was to take the last alternative 1st. Sacking of MD is not and is never the 1st remedial action for a troubled bank if any, but the last after all avenue exhausted.
Sanusi hope you can see this through? Mama I am with you in prayers. May God be with you.

I'm with you on this. Hosannah today, crucify him tomorrow, the true Naija spirit. Yesterday, they were with us, we celebrated them. They were benefactors, mentors, opinion makers and today, they are being villified. It's surprising that i'm taking this position inspite that i've never worked in a bank.

Ofokasibe, What do you say to the "act" that Cecelia Ibru (Mama!) made an unsecured loan of 13billion naira (depositors funds!!) to her Nanny (Aunty Nana) to open a gift shop? What do you have to say to the different owners of such money, now that the bubble have bust and the money can not be refunded? If CBN has not bailed-out Oceanic and the others like them (Again, with our Tax Money, Money that could well be used to improve education and health or provide electricity, if the crooks in govt dont loot it first ) how funny would you find it, if You go to Oceanic to withdraw your #5000 and they can not pay you? Would you be "praying" for Cecelia by then? For me, its nothing personal BUT some actions are just not excusable. Two wrongs dont make a right. Financial recklessness and criminality has become the order of the day among our bank Executives! What would you have said? BTW: Ortiv, l salute your reasoning. You brought a 'fresh angle' to the story!

I used to love Nairaland. But the way things are going, 'o ti wa gba ole, o ti gba ole'. Meaning Nairaland is fast becoming a place for lay-abouts and never-do-wells.
Oceanic Bank gave me a job and i have been most grateful to God for this. I make mistakes, but Oceanic Bank gives me a ground to fall on. I get chastised for the mistakes i commit or omit but i dont get slaughtered like most carnal banals would prefer.
I wouldnt blame haters though. I probably would do same if i was in dude's shoes. We're proud of our processes. I feel proud when i see the cabinet containing Pay Advance Salary Scheme (PASS) for teachers and the likes for my branch.
Oluwaseun Osewa, I love your innovation called nairaland but do a research about the status of most people visiting your site so we can give credibility to words spoken here.I wouldnt like to get emotional to the point i'll get my mind pouring out.
'Officer, officer, why write these much epistle just to see an Oceanic Big boy ridiculed sir? Has it now become a crime they way we're flossing sir ??!!!!!' Cut my salary in half, lay me off, arrest all staff, i will still be heavenly grateful for the founding Fathers and Mothers of Oceanic Bank. My theme song for all you haters is Hate me now by Puff Daddy and Nasty Nas.
This time too shall pass.
i concur with everything here, but the only thing that i hate about the organization is ''TOO MUCH OF EYE SERVICE'' before i forget some of them can be rude too,you know y, they in one way related to the MD or they have God father or mother somewhere but all the same this can never be true, even the two banks you guys are hailing i hope you will not allow me to talk about them cos if it is deposit canvassin then it is not oceanic bank, can somebody open his or her eyes and see, just stot hating, this time shall pass.

This Agent MS character is obviously misguided in many ways. when u were still enjoying the largesse u did not know that the management style was flawed. u r ranting now just because your eye service moves did not work and u were thrown out of the system before u met your own personal target fuelled by greed and self-absorption.
I will not dignify your baseless insinuations and submissions by trying to defend the calibre of the staff and Management of Oceanic Bank. However, I have one question for you - do you think the true high flyers have time for people like you and your childish online posts? Get serious!!

@Agent MS, If you have any personal issues with anyone during your stay at Oceanic Bank, why don't you address it? In every organization all over the world, there would always be some bad eggs. For you to have known only the "ills" where you worked seem to reflect the kind of person you might be. If you are a true professional, then you would know that brandishing what you assume to be the wrongs where you worked or are working over the Internet is the height of indiscipline! I know a lot of people that have worked/are working in Oceanic Bank that are very sound bankers. The same policy that you are criticizing gave you job at some points in time and you agreed it was with excellent reward also. The facilities and policies have been deployed, it is left to all of Nigerian Bankers or Oceanic Bank staff to maximize it for their own good and consequently for our own economy! Not everyone in the University would finish with 1st class but it is expected that they all become learned and thorough-bred. This also illustrates what is in banking also and if you are not living up to that, you should know the result! Consultants that train bankers all over Nigeria have attested to the fact that Oceanic Bank has about the best training and leadership academy. Agent MS, I expect you should be a thorough professional. You have made it clear that you do not even understand the rudiments of banking and banking ethics seems alienated to you and obviously you are just out to make money by jumping from bank to bank without striving to educate the polity but rather, mis-inform Nigerians that aspire to know about banking in a Nation where there is no freedom of information. Let's be guided and well-informed!

PLS THE STARTER OF THIS THREAD IS NOT WELL INFORMED, THIS IS NOT AN AVENUE FOR YOU TO EXPRESS YOUR SUBJECTIVE OPINION.
PLS BE SINCERE THERE IS NO NIGERIA BANKS THAT ARE CURRENTLY COMPLYING WITH SOX AND CORPORATE GOVERNANCE, BESIDE THIS, WHAT OF EXECUTIVE FRAUDS? AND OTHER HIDDEN SELF INTEREST AGENDA'S.
FOR THE FACT THAT SOME BANKS ARE CURRENTLY BEING USED AS SCAPE GOAT DOES NOT MEAN WE HAVE ANY BETTER BANKING SYSTEM.
ALL OTHER BANKS ARE THEY GIVING LONGTERM FACILITIES EXCEPT ROUND TRIP OF THE SAME FOREIGN CURRENCIES AND OPENING OF BA'S FOR IMPORT TRADERS.
PLS BEFORE YOU CONCLUDE REFER TO VANGUARD OF 23RD MARCH,2009 THIS WILL TELLS YOU THE STATE OF OUR ECONOMY AND DIVERSE CONFLICT OF INTEREST THAT IS ABOUT TO COLLAPSE OUR COUNTRY.
