I did all the setting up but it still did not wrk. I then went to the MTN office in Port Harcourt. There I was told that MTN stopped granting new GPRS access since November 2005. Only those already signed on before Nov-2005 can access the GPRS. This is such an importanmt piece of information and I am disappointed they could not even say so on their website.

I'D like every MTN subscriber to know that their GPRS service is currently active and free even though up till now their service centers deny that it is available. I think that either they don't want us to know that its free or they don't know its active (MTN & their tricks). Anyway, 4 me i'v been browsing almost allday, everyday for free my phone is now loaded with cool stuff. Its my chance to finally get something back from MTN & if they decide to deduct my credit 4 previous browsing i know what to do Wink  Grin

If you are using Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola or Siemens:

Look at the bottom of the page in the link below:

http://www.mtnonline.com/vas/sightzandsoundz.asp

At the bottom of that page you will see links to the above manufacturers: all you have to do is go to the link for your phone's manufacturer; fill in your phone model, the country where you are, your network (i.e. v-mobile, mtn etc) and your phone number (in the international format i.e. +2348021234567) and in a matter of minutes they will send the settings and your phone will be ready for wap and mms. Only e-mail is not currently supported.

Edit and Correction PLEASE NOTE: before downloading the settings from manufacturer's site you need to get some 'activation' from operator first; therefore you have to send SMS: SETTINGS to 3888 (MTN); or wap nokia 6100  to 184 (V-mobile; obviously you use your own phone model); for Glo, better call customer care.

I wasn't able to access Nairaland from a MTN phone I configured today, yet I was able to access the MTN site.  The other polyphonic ringtone site that we've been directing people to (wap.handphones.info) doesn't work either.

Mr. seun, Are the MTN settings still the same? I already have them on my phone? Got it from the mtn link above. I will be using an MTN sim when I visit Lagos in 5 weeks. Are all the sims automatically configured for GPRS (most likely) or one has to request that it be activated? Also, I read somewhere that GPRS is not available to the new 0806 numbers. Is there any truth to these. I don't see why they should restrict it as long as it's being paid for. Hopefully, I'll be able to browse via my laptop using the MTN sim. I have already setup an internet connection for MTN on the laptop.

OTOH, if my Virgin-UK payg sim works in Niger, I might just use that if it's cheaper. Virgin charges 5pounds/meg roamimg or not. I have not checked MTN's site to see their prices.

for everyone trying to set his or her GPRS to browse,it is very easy and simple as long there is the GPRS signal in your area, all you need do is to find where you can find the following and input the following settings

NAME or PROFILE: MTN WAP/MTN ACCESS/MTN SERVICES/MTN GPRS/MTN INTERNET/(any name you wish)

APN(ACCESS POINT NAME): web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net (note:this is very important)

I P:10.199.212.2  OR  010.199.212.002

PORT NO.9201 or 8080

USER NAME: web

PASSWORD:web

HOMEPAGE:wap.mtnonline.com  or wap.google.com (wap.google.com is preferable)

I believe the above type would work fine but there are some phone that require the following settings below.

SERVICE TYPE: WAP or HTTP

DNS:is same with I P:10.199.212.2  or  010.199.212.002

CSD:this is for dial up so ignore it

SPEED: 9600

LINE TYPE: modem

this will do for now,for more info and also connecting to your laptop or DESKTOP,you can reach on 08065942445 or  mail  ncpatnig@yahoo.co.uk   i`m base in Abuja.
