Yoruba Actors And Actresses In Nollywood Are Better?
« on: December 02, 2006, 04:36 PM »

Yoruba Actors are still 100% better than English speaking actors in Nollywood.

Yoruba movies do not cost a fortune, but they are still better than the so called epic movies of Nollywood.

Yoruba actors and actresses are more natural and more credible in characterization than the Ibo and Urhobo/Isoko actors in Nollywood.

Yoruba actors and actresses are even more professional even though they don't earn as much as the much talked about Nollywood stars.

Baba Suwe is better than Osuofia.
Sola Shobowale is best actress in Nollywood.
She acts both Ibo and Yoruba roles.
She is just awesome!

I'm sorry, but all of that proves nothing. Just because those actors/actresses might be better, does not mean that all of them are. Acting ability is not something that you inherit by tribe.

Why don't you make a thread so there's something to actually dispute, like who's the best actor/actress. But then again I believe that such threads already exist.

I am disappointed in your post.

I was watching a Yoruba movie on cable and we were discussing the natural mannerisms of the Yoruba actors and for the ignorant morons, we discuss this anytime we meet on locations in Nollywood.

Orikinla Osinachi looking for attention?

I am not Yorubanized Igbo.

I am 100% Igbo.

If we can discuss black actors and white actors in Hollywood, then we can discuss Yoruba actors versus English speaking actors in Nollywood.

Mind you, many of the English speaking Nollywood stars are Yoruba.

I support Orikinla 100%, i have watched yoruba films and i have watched the so called ibo or english films, the difference is so glaring, the yoruba actors are far far better, it might due to the story line, most of the so called ibo script are so baseless and not appealing and you find the actors finding it so hard to interpret it, at times it is like you are watching primary six play, they need to work on their script.

The modes of acting in Yoruba movies by OGD, Mainframe and Muyiwa Ademola are far better than those of English films, no matter who the producer/director is.

Orikinla,

thanks for starting this thread o. it is good to know am not alone in this line of reasoning. you know there are times i think nollywood english movies are still that mediocre in nature because most of the time, tribalism makes them go 4 half baked actors/actresses. i think some people are just too scared to own up to the truth that the yorubas are better actors/actresses. i prefer watching yoruba movies, they come out with more indepth, maturity and keep you glued to your screen from beginning to the end. please let us be less tribalistic and select based on merit, it is then we can start talking about nollywood rivaling hollywood/bollywood.

Another question: If Yoruba actors are better, why are they not paying them to act the English movies? Discrimination you say? Omotola/Richard Mofe Damijo do not seem Igbo to me and they're one of the bigger Nollywood stars.

Mainstream Nollywood actors are clearly better and that is why they are paid the amount of money they are. If I remember collectly, most of what is currently Nollywood started off as Igbo speaking movies. It became popular, they added subtitles, they became even more popular and they decided to just start acting in English entirely ( think of Living in Bondage, Ikuku, Circle of Doom, Love without Language, all those early movies). If Yoruba acting was better, why didn't it take to the mainstream before the Onitsha movie producers?, Think before you speak.

It's like claiming Premiership players are not better than Pepsi League players. Nollywood attracts the best actors/actresses without a doubt. End of story!

@Orikinla

If they are better, why isn't there pressure for them to go mainstream and start speaking English like what happened with the Igbo movies?

Are you serious?

anyway this thread is right. Yoruba movies kill those cliched English Nollywood movies. Better plots, better acting and BETTER TITLES.

Btw why are people getting offended, are they trying to imply that Ibos OWN English part of Nollywood? Cos I really don't see why there's an arguement about this.

I think you are confused and money doesnt exactly equal talent

In Hollywood there are quite a number of cliched actors who get paid alot yet they are shitty actors/actresses. They play the same stupid part in every movie and still make money. Like Adam Sandler, would you say he's exactly "talented"? He's not yet he makes alot of money and that's because he has fans. It has nothing to do with talent for the most part

and the person said Yoruba movies are better than Nolly movies, NOT IBO movies. Like I said, unless you people are trying to say that Igbos own Nollywood I don't see why there's an arguement.
I personally used to love the Igbo movies, they were just as good as the Yoruba ones, unforunately I don't see them anymore.

@ThiefofHearts

Money does not equal talent but in movies, more money is paid to better talent and it's that simple. People watch and enjoy Nollywood movies, the producers get more money and are able to pay their actors better. It's not that hard. You cannot argue that it's because they speak English and have greater mass appeal because as I already pointed out, these movies started out as Igbo speaking. Demand was HUGE, they added subtitles and later added English as whole. The same demand pressures are not on Yoruba movies because they're not as good and their best actors/actresses leave for Nollywood.

Quote
Igbos own Nollywood I don't see why there's an arguement.

It has to do with the history of Nollywood. It started with predominantly Igbo actors/producers/distributors. Even up until today, most of the movies can be found at Iweka Road Onitsha, Nnamdi Azikiwe road Idumota and some place in Aba (can't remember). It's basically Igbo enterpreneurs bankrolling these movies.

Quote

More money isnt given to better talent. Like I said with the Adam Sandler example, it's all about the fans. If they know that a certain actor no matter how talent-less will draw a bigger crowd whether because the person is just a clown or weird or in the case of females is hott/sexy and all that crap, they'll pay the person big money because they know that no matter how lame the movie is, that particular person will draw his fans to the movie and they will make their profit. They are alot of great actresses in Hollywood who don't make nearly as much as the mediocre ones and that's because they don't have a strong following(fans) or the movies they do arent big budgeted.

and um demand IS high for Yoruba movies by Yorubas or people who understand the language. No one asked Igbo producers to give up their movies in favor for English. If anything there should be Yoruba, Ibo AND English movies. You might argue against it but is is TRUE that Nollywood English movies are big because of English and , that's why they are popular outside of the country. Many Caribbean people watch them because they are speaking English, obviously they can't watch Yoruba movies because they don't understand the language. There's also the fact that these English Nolly people have a big following, in and outside of Nigeria because of the fact that they're in English movies that everyone can enjoy and not just people of certain tribes.
I can't believe you truly want to say Yoruba movies arent good. Obviously you've never watched them before. I can name 5 Yoruba movies that destroy the entire Nollywood catalog. I think it's a damn shame Ibo movies arent made anymore. I thought they were great and they stuck to their culture, they didnt try to be what they are not, as opposed to Nolly English movies that steal ideas left and right with their corny ass titles.

and I didnt say Ibos own nollywood, I said I hope people don't THINK they own Nollywood. Nollywood isnt just IBO, how arrogant. To think that saying Yoruba movies are better than english nollywood means Yoruba movies are better than Ibo movies is very presumptuous.
