Report: Caster Semenya A Hermaphrodite
« on: September 11, 2009, 11:47 AM »

Gender tests on South African athlete Caster Semenya have found she is a hermaphrodite, an Australian newspaper reported, as a senior official admitted she may not be "100 per cent" female.

Quote
Sydney's Daily Telegraph, citing an unnamed source involved in the tests on the world 800m champion, said she had both male and female sex organs and no womb or ovaries.

"There certainly is evidence Semenya is a hermaphrodite," the source was quoted as saying.

Pierre Weiss, secretary-general of the International Association of Athletics Federations, earlier told AFP that Semenya was "possibly between two sexes".

"It is clear that she is a woman but maybe not 100 per cent," Weiss said, adding that the case would be decided by the IAAF executive council in November.

"We have to see if she has an advantage from her possibly being between two sexes compared to the others."

The furore has enraged South Africa's ruling African National Congress party, which called testing the 18-year-old "sexist and racist".

The IAAF has said Semenya is unlikely to be stripped of her world title earned last month in Berlin, but confirmed four athletes in earlier cases were "asked to stop their career".

"The trouble is the IAAF now have the whole ANC and the whole of South Africa on their backs," the source said.

"Everything is going to have to be done absolutely by the book, no question of a challenge to the findings."

She added: "The problem for us is to avoid it being an issue now which is very personal: of the organs being a hermaphrodite, of not being a 'real' woman. It's very dramatic."

Semenya, whose coach has quit over the controversy, has called the row "a joke" and undergone an image makeover in which she posed for a South African magazine.

"There's all sorts of scans you can do. This is why it's so complicated," the source said.

"In the past you used to do a gynaecological exam, blood test, chromosome test, whatever. That's why they (the findings) were challenged, because it's not quite so simple.

"So what they do now is they do everything, and then they can say look, not only has she got this, she's got that and the other."

Weiss admitted the IAAF was struggling to deal with the complex case, which will be decided at the November 20-21 executive council meeting.

"We still don't have all the results and those we do have must be submitted to experts for evaluation," he said.

"The problem we have today is to know whether we submit these results to experts from outside the IAAF or our own medical commission which meets in Monaco on October 16, or to the two panels."

He added: "We don't have any texts on this subject as we do for doping. There is no provision in our rules as to what our decision might be."

It's another chapter in an unfortunate story. It's easy to get caught up in the sensationalized aspects of Semenya's tale, but let's not forget that she's still just a teenager who is now the centerpiece of an embarrassing worldwide scandal. No matter how things progressed to this point (and we'll get to that later), Semenya is a victim in this story.

But let's operate under assumption that the tests were accurate and that Semenya is a hermaphrodite. If so, then there are three main questions that will need to be answered soon:

1) Will Semenya be stripped of her gold medal?

Probably. It's hard to imagine that the IAAF would allow Semenya to keep the gold after what these tests reveal. The rules explicitly state that a "gender verification" situation has to be approved and overseen by medical authorities. Semenya didn't do this. Fair or not, a rule is a rule.

2) Will Semenya ever be allowed to run again?

Reading the IAAF rules, it would appear that Semenya would be allowed to run if her condition was treated. Whether or not she would want to is anyone's guess. But there's also a chance she could be banned from running based on the answer to the next question.

3) Who knew about this and when did they know?

We haven't gotten this far down the road yet, but the next logical step in the progression of this sordid affair is whether there was a coverup involved. Regardless of whether the intentions of Semenya and her handlers were nefarious, they had to know of her ambiguous gender. Not having ovaries isn't something that goes unnoticed.  If they did, then at what point did this turn from an unfortunate medical situation into outright deception?

If Semenya was an innocent running without knowledge of her condition, then there's not much the IAAF could do other than strip her medal and advise her on how to regain eligibility. But if it can be determined that she knew she was running illegally (which would be tough to prove, but I'm starting to get the feeling that people knew -- how else would other coaches have known to order gender tests?) then there could be heavy sanctions down the road.

These questions will be discussed in the coming weeks and will be the center of attention when the IAAF officially releases its findings in November. If you thought the tale of Caster Semenya was strange before, it's just getting started

Well, d honest thin IAAF could do is strip her of d medal and other prizes attached 'cos, to other contestants, its 'cheating'.

She might not av 'cheated' deliberately, but, in fairness to some other contestants, she can't just continue (with d hermaphrodite status)

much as i will like to pity her especially based on her age and the fact that she never asked for this from God,i will be quick in telling south africans that he who left shit on the way going will meet flies on his way coming.at the 99 all africa games hosted by south africa, nigerian women won all the gold medals in women weight lifting, immediately, the south african authorities hauled them all in for gender testing.it was a very embarrassing and humiliating  situation for our women.our officials protested to no avail, not even an apology was offered to the poor women.today, even J,Zuma is at the fore front of the protest and calling the decision "racist and sexist", cos the nigerian women had no family nor president.what is good for the nigerian women should be good for Caster.other african countries have a way of trying to run us down even with everything that we do for them.at least nxt time, they will learn to respect others as they want to be respected.

Dont mind our people, Nigerians, The love appreciating foreigner than their own people,
If this has happened in Nigerian the story wouldnt be the same,
We Nigerians ourselves will be the major critics of the same poor girl.

This an issue with the possibility of deception in it,
She is 18 and have both male and femal organs, How would no one no abt it? She has no womb nor ovaries which even at 18 she has never mensturated, She never questioned that or see doctor for such case?
Was she not born in the hospital?
So wht are talking abt that no one Knew abt it including herself.
Her case is not the first from southern Africa there i think this is a 2nd case of such, that is why they have the guts to subject our Nigerian girls on such test.

If really she is an hermaprodite, then it is in her best interest to quit. Any subsequent medal she wins will be tainted by the fact that she is not completely female.

As sophisticated as South Africa is , don't tell me they couldn't perform test to determine her gender before they entered her for the race. Those incompetent officials should have themselves to blame, especially those fool talking about "World War 111". Most times African officials talk without thinking.
I feel sorry for the poor girl though.
