  my name is ken, they call me gasket, don't ask me how that name came about, that would be another topic, any way i'm an electrical/electronics engr. micro/industrial electronics is my specialty. i smiled when i went through this page. just to get the records straight, watts is not equal to to KV, infact Kv is not even correct in the context, it is supposed to be KVA, which is kilo volt ampere. where watts is the unit of power, VA is the product of volt and ampere the "K" is only included if the value is in thousands. so you see the two quantites (watts & VA) are not equal, if you want to convert, say from VA to watts, you would have to multiply the product VA by the power factor (p.f) of the A.C supply system, most of the time this value is not known, that is why it is easier to just quantify the power in VA, since the voltage and ampere can be easily obtained.
power inverters are very sensitive equimpments and should not be somthing one indulges into without caution.

The lights may dwarf the freezer and fridge if not changed to energy efficient bulbs so to be on the safe side 5kva inverter would do. If you carry out an energy efficiency program then a 3.5kva would suffice.

Yea I quite agree with you. But can't we begin to think of an inverter design that can easily be afforded and for a light load application. Has it never crossed our mind how Nigerians have come to understand energy management with the increase in popularity of the 650VA generator. If such generators have brought relief to the common man, can't we begin the deployment of similarly rated inverters at least to reduce the noise and also CO emission from the these generators
