LAGOS – Virgin Nigeria Airways has changed its name to Nigerian Eagle Airlines, and the new identity takes immediate effect.
The airline also said it had no problems with the United Bank of Africa (UBA) Plc over its indebtedness to the bank, as it was managing and servicing the debt.
Chief Executive Officer of the airline, Captain Dapo Olumide, who unveiled the airline’s new identity, told newsmen at a briefing yesterday that the change of name was sequel to the withdrawal of Virgin Atlantic Airways as core investor and technical of Virgin Nigeria Airways (VNA).
Chairman of the Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson, had last year announced the withdrawal of his 49 per cent equity in Virgin Nigeria, which also attracted 51 per cent ownership by Nigerian institutional investors.
Olumide said the new name was chosen to project the country’s image and pride, adding that the desire of the board and management was to build it into a brand.
While one of the airline’s seven aircraft is expected to arrive the country today in its new colours and name, Capt. Olumide said all the planes in the airline’s fleet as well as offices across the country and West Africa would have been completely re-branded in two months.
Olumide, who asserted that Virgin Atlantic Airways was free to sell its stakes in the airline, said Nigerian Eagle Airlines has concluded plans to source funds from the capital market for its operations.
“We are going to have our private placement in the next six weeks. The Board has met and taken a position on that, and we are also expecting investors overseas to invest in the new airline. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2009/09/18/virgin-nigeria-airways-now-nigerian-eagle-airlines/comment-page-3/#comments

No matter what they call it or the paint on the plane, Just like any project with the name Nigeria on it is always a non starter. Anything that is associated with eagle are eventually battered in Nigeria e.g Super eagle, flying eagle, eagle paint and so on,our leaders it is not the name that matters to us if you are reading but a change of attitude towards proper management of our resources.

This is evidence that Nigeria is a failed state, if we have to spend 5yrs to figure out a name for the national carrier, and what is this nonsense called "Fly Nigeria Act" is that how business is run in a free market??, to force consumers to buy your product even when your services does not comply with requested services, or when it is dangerous to consumers??, why is no one talking about "employ 99% Nigeria ACT" so that the foreign workers in the oil industries can either hawk recharge cards on the street or go back to where they all came from. This fly nigeria act is insane. Why couldnt Nigeria airlines consortium come up with a marketing plan that will enable Nigerians have faith in their services and fly them??? e.g like what GM (General Motors) is doing "May the best car win" So instead of them to lobby the NA for a senseless act they should be working on "may the best airline win" Or "fly before you pay" or "Fly and dont pay if our service does not meet your standard" these are some of the bold step they could take to bring back confidence in consumers.

The eagle works for America but doesnt seem to be working for Nigeria.
I'd have preferred a more innocuous name like Tipia airlines or something.
Nybena or Nybend (Niger + benue) airlines
Greenway/s
Golden
Flamingo
etc etc

If you knew what " Tipia" means in Igbo, you probably won't recommend that as a successful brand! I laugh in Igbo

If you knew what " Tipia" means in Igbo, you probably won't recommend that as a successful brand! I laugh in Igbo it means crush, break or smash, right? well, cant help that- I still like the name and it isnt Igbo btw. If you're referring to tibia which means diviner or spiritualist, its spelt with a b, not a p. Same way pot cant be spelt bot and pick is different from bick. Tippia or Tippya might be another alternative but it doesnt quite have the same spunk.

So if you knew the meaning, how can you risk some Igbo dudes running away from the "Tipia brand" from day one? You get courage o!

Changing a name is good but it is not a priority compared to tackling inefficiency and corruption in that sector.

Did they have to include eagle in the name, worse still they added Nigerian. Last time I checked, the brand; Nigeria was not doing well internationally image-wise, hence she checked into Dora Akunyili rehabilitation re-branding clinic

This is bad news. The owner of Virgin Atlantic is one of the richest men in the world. Virgin Nigeria was the closest airline to international airlines I have ever seen besides ARIK air.
Just wait, you will see a decline in the services of this new airline.
