ASUP may want to go on strike not because of the removal of disparity between HND and Degree but because of the abolishment of HND programs/certificate as well as the educational reforms which ultimately makes all polytechnics to become campuses of universities and not independent polytechnics as before. They have a good point there, after all ASUU have been going on strike times without number for reasons far far behind what ASUP are planning to strike against.

HND is not the point, Nigerian simply do not want polytechnic. So ASUP member shall now be ASUU they will now be University lecturer. Nothing change except expansion of university like Silsoe college former Uk polytechnic now campus of Cranfield University. They still have the HND stuff with PhD and D.Engr.
Why will you continue to produce what the society will not LOVE. We are their product, How many HND holders in ASUP? ASUP is myopic and selfish. University make use of their product why can't Polytechnic do that.
The so call graduates are just mafia looking for job for their product, they want slaves we are calling for FREEDOM

You are correct. Most of the polytechnic lecturers/ASUP members are not polytechnic HND graduates. |

Hello, I greet all my fellows NairaLand user, infact you have all done a good job. My only contributon to the matter on ground is that president obasanjo has really done a great job, because the situation we are in Nigeria now need to find something urgent done if only we want to get out of our slavery. As we all know that any nation that neglet technology, we serve its other counterpart, in Nigeria we need to find the way to advance technologically. And the only way to do it is to merge polytechnic with the university, so there will be no more discrimination, and besides, govermnent should pass the kind of bill out that will purnish any employer that descriminate. The relegation of technical know-how in general manifests in many ways in Nigerian society.
Parents want their children to become doctors and lawyers but rarely do they recommend Technologists and Technicians as role models for their kids. When you mention polytechnic education, people think of nitty-gritty hard labour jobs, out in the sun in shorts and rolled up sleeves stained with oil and grease.
But we cannot also fail to recognize the dangers posed to Nigeria's progress by the national obsession with white-collar professions and vocations at the expense of the no-less-important technical education and skills acquisition aspect. This issue has assumed alarming dimensions in the context of the increasing importance of technical know-how and technology in general in world development. The uncomfortable truth staring at us is that the modern world is TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN, with fewer premiums on memo-pushing white-collar jobs that lure our people. The urgent steps taken by the federal government to realign our educational bearings are highly welcome it will dovetail into the ongoing worldwide technological revolution.

Engineers List Gains in Removal of Bias Against HND Holders

The removal of discrimination against Higher National Diploma (HND) holders in employment opportunities will propel the technological growth of Nigeria, the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE) has said.
Addressing newsmen at the NUJ press centre in Abuja during the weekend, NATE President, Chief Leo Okereke said the elimination of bias would revitalise Technical Vocational Education (TVE), regenerate student intake into polytechnics, reduce undue pressure in university admission and unnecessary emphasis on paper qualification as well as introduce healthy competition between universities and polytechnics and increase productivity in the civil service.
Other gains include balancing of the man-made imbalance in professional practice, provision of choice in the job market, lending of credence and creditability on polytechnics and their products and changing the face of polytechnics in Nigeria.
Chief Okereke said NATE, a body of practical engineers representing polytechnic graduates has been "in the fight for the emancipation of this group from the claws of the cabals that hoisted this unnecessary discrimination" since its establishment in 1970 and has thirty-two years later won the battle against discrimination.
He commended President Umaru Musa Yar'adua, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former education minister Oby Ezekwesili, NBTE executive secretary Dr. Nuru Yakubu and members of the Natrional Assembly for "dismantling the monstrous dichotomy, discrimination and stagnation mounted against polytechnics and its graduates in Nigeria for decades".

No gains until they remove the discrimination completely and not partially against HND holders. Why should HND holders be employed as level 07 in the federal civil service instead of level 08?? is level 07 not meant for NCE holders?? is level 08 not for HND and Degree holders?? How comes dey are employing HND holders as level 07 officers now??
Let them address this issue o.

This is not the issue of getting the white paper, it is in black & white that customs advertised for employment recently and discriminated HND graduates by saying that they will be employed as inspectors (level 07) instead of Assistant Supt of customs (ASC) (level 08). @HND-holder Please tell me, is there any discrimination that is worse than this?? Even Prisons and immigration are currently recruiting and they are doing same to HND graduates, taking them as inspectors (level 07) instead of Assistant Superintendants (level 08). I tell you there is still discrimination against HND holders and it is the Federal civil service that is worst affected. |

They can't just be converted like that, they need to go through rigorous upgradings and accreditations
Standard of teaching needs to improve, lecturers need to undergo re-training to come up to an acceptable standard
Admission criteria needs to be overhauled and teaching methods amongst other things would help towards a transition
I doubt all this can be done easily, it would always be beneficial to have the divide in tertiary education and i vote for the system to stay the same

If it remains the same as HND awarding institution is there any benefit to you or Nigeria? When Nigerian are no longer intrested in HND what will the product of the polytechnic be doing? No body want the the polytechnic product and parent of the crop of the polites are not happy about the school.
