Your own study that you pointed out is using facts gained from the US Census Bureau statistics and therefore lumps ALL BLACK people into one group and does not distinguish between native born blacks and non-native blacks. There are sub categories but all sub categories are grouped into 5 only 5 race categories. And seeing that no one was discussing the validity of race categories on this thread I thought that you would make the connection in your flawed logic with out me having to shine a spot light on it. Shine a spotlight on me? There are five racial categories, but distinctions are still made between Black Americans and Africans through those sub-categories, as you can see in the link I gave you. It seems like you're having a hard time grasping this fact. I understand that there are no racial distinctions between Africans and Black Americans in the census, but it's the same with everyone else- why are you pointing out the obvious? Is this all too technical for you to comprehend?  |

All of the above The reason I ask you this is because in my earlier post, I told you that I understand there are no differentiations made between Black Americans and Africans- in a racial context. The differentiation is made through ancestry, nationality, place of birth, etc as posted through my link. There are no distinctions made between any "races" in the US census, so what you're doing is stating the obvious. Are you still having a hard time understanding, or do you need me to translate this into ebonics? |

black spade if you want to talk about the validity of race categories then that can be discussed in the proper thread.
Personally I agree that "race" is a misnomer.
But that is not what this thread is about.
And my first comment was simply about this thread and a direct response to your post about African Americans being the fattest. I just wanted to point out to you that if you live in America and you are a person of color you are identified as African American too no matter how much yall try to deny it. Most studies use the 5 race categories for stating, collecting, presenting and dissecting data. Therefore when posting data about African Americans you should understand that if you live in America you are included in that group. . . . unless of course under definition for race other groups are noted as separate. Sub group usually does not make it most studies and did not make it your study. Your study pointed to Five (5) race categories.

Nigerians are quite weight prejudiced and, often, Diasporan are lambasted for being overweightwhen they return to Nigeria .

The Nigerian women in the three pictures above, would, in Nigeria, be considered as having weight (thick).
The Nigerian woman in black in the picture above is the norm for most girls in Nigeria – at least in the part of Nigeria that I come from
However, there appear to be growing trend in Nigerian films to give prominence to thick and fat women. Some have argued that what we are seeing is the ageing, middle age, of the first wave of actresses. My suspicion is that Nigerian filmmakers /casters are falling into the trap of pandering to foreign perception of Africa body-type. This is an insidious and quite difficult idea to get across.
It is the subversion of the fact that individuals with “body” were so rare in Africa, those with “body” were considered by Africans to be people with wealth. Therefore, a less muscular body, or soft curves, became desirable. This means Africans saw wealth as desirable. However, they also saw the acquisition of wealth as desirable. Therefore, in this regard, a physical body type, capable of handling farm work, and which looks healthy and capable of surviving sickness and childbirth was also desirable. To Africans the ideal body-type for this later would be one, which was tall, physically balanced and strong.
Unfortunately, whites have subverted many ideas - some half understood African customs, others from places like Papua New Guinea, which is not an African country, and then come up with the simple cliché that African like fat women.
Fat women aren’t an African Ideal. It has only become so in the past fifty years. This is because contemporary African notions are foreign. In other words, an Africans persons’ understanding of himself is created in the printing rooms of Europe and America.
