Nigeria Vs Venezuela (0 - 1) - FIFA U-20 WC 2009
« on: September 24, 2009, 01:41 PM »

It's here again. The adrenaline heart stopping tournament. The show for future stars.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Nigeria vs Veneznuela match.

As winners of the last FIFA U-17 World Cup in Korea Republic, the current crop of Nigerian talent should be firm favourites as they step up an age group to compete the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt. But a far from convincing performance at the recent African Youth Championships has left the Nigerians short on confidence resulting in a overhaul of the coaching staff. Nigeria finished third at the African qualifiers in Rwanda in January, a performance that was good enough to see them reach Egypt but not good enough for a demanding public back home. Following the tournament, former international and Olympic coach Samson Siasia was appointed to take over from Ladan Bosso in a drastic reaction to a perceived dip in fortunes.

Our Record:
• Nigeria hosted the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 1999.
• They finished runners-up at Netherlands 2005
• Nigeria have competed at seven previous FIFA U-20 World Cups.
• They have won 13 of their 35 matches at the U-20 finals, with 12 defeats and 10 draws .

You can follow the matches here LIVE: * Thanks to Mreds*
All the matches would be on Supersport( DSTV), Aljazeera sports,Abu dhabi sports for FTA users, AIT also said they would pick it (not sure if it's going to be all the matches).

Watch out 4 talaat 2nyt (Al Ahly -  Egypt) as the young pharaohs take on T&T.

And also on fifa.com and Eurosport.

Enjoy the best of Youth football.

Star players
Rabiu Ibrahim has been tagged the crown prince of African football for two years now, since a stellar performance at the last FIFA U-17 World Cup in the Far East. The Nigerian prodigy was signed by Sporting Lisbon last year and is being hailed as Nigeria's new ‘Okocha', a reference to his role as the conductor of the side in the same style as the much-loved Jay-Jay.  The captain of the Flying Eagles is Lukman Haruna, who has already been capped at full international level by his country.

Bite me but I really dont understand how he (Lukman H) is captain?

'Flying Eagles won’t lack support'

Nigeria's Flying Eagles will not be lacking in support when they begin their campaign to win the FIFA World Youth Championship in Egypt this week.

Oche Peters, a former Udoji United coach who runs the Supreme International Sports Academy in Cairo, says their performance at the 5-Nation tournament earlier this year when they finished second behind hosts Egypt, had won them followers.

Flying Eagles eager to end hoodoo

When Nigeria's Flying Eagles take on Venezuela in Group B of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009 this Friday, they will be eager to end a hoodoo that stretches back for more than 25 years and that has seen them fail to beat South American opposition in eight finals appearances.

Indeed it is a curious piece of trivia, considering that Nigeria have enjoyed considerable success at the tournament, reaching the final on two occasions and recording one third-place finish. Nevertheless, their record against South American sides makes for uncomfortable reading. Brazil have accounted for three defeats (3-0 at Mexico 1983, 2-0 at USSR 1985 and 4-0 Chile 1987), while the Eagles have also been grounded by Paraguay (2-1 at Nigeria 1999), Argentina (2-1 at Netherlands 2005) and Chile (4-0 at Canada 2007). Their solitary piece of cheer came against Brazil in 2005, when they managed a scoreless draw.

Full preview to come tomorrow before the match.

Ladies and Gentlemen it is a new day, a new beginning and let us all hope that by the end of it we will be smiling.

After the heartache, backache and hypertension thanks to the Super Eagles (a fellow pleaded not to call them chickens anymore) of Nigeria (although all hope is not lost) we are all hoping and praying that, SiaOne and his boys will do us proud and by the special Grace of The Almighty God we shall win it. Did I hear you say Amen.

Let us all hope that we are about to witness the start of a new beginning.

Hon Pat (what's that his last name again?) was contacted to assist with the commentaries given his verbal verbosity but he told me to tell you
"Vēnī, vīdī, vīcī" . . .audaces fortuna iuvat  (It's Hon. Pat, ain't nuffing you can do about it).

Jakumo as I understand is also on sabatical.

However, there is no cause for alarm, I, FBS your host  along with all other lovers of football and our Great Nation Nigeria will be with you all the way.

Its Nigeria vs Venezuela (16:45 GMT).

There are other matches today:

Paraguay vs Italy (14:00 GMT)

Poles apart in Cairo

Nigeria and Venezuela get the ball rolling in Group B of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009 when they meet at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo on Friday.

The game
Nigeria-Venezuela, Cairo, Friday 25 September, 18:45 (local time)

The stakes
These two sides go into the competition with very different pressures upon them. While the Nigerians must live up to their pre-tournament billing of title candidates, newcomers Venezuela are outsiders with nothing to lose. Friday's meeting is also a clash of styles between the direct, physical approach of the Africans and the South Americans' more patient brand of possession-based football, setting up the prospect of an intriguing battle for three valuable points.

The stat
0 - The number of times that Nigeria have got the better of South American opposition in the history of the tournament. The Flying Eagles have lost six out of seven matches against the cream of the CONMEBOL Zone and drawn the other, a goalless stalemate with Brazil at Netherlands 2005.

The words
"We've never beaten a South American team before but things will be different this time. That doesn't mean to say we'll be underestimating Venezuela because that would be a big mistake. It's our first match and we want to win it." Nigeria midfielder Yakubu Alfa

"Nigeria are a physical side with some quick and dynamic players, and they're one of the strongest teams at this level. We need to be watchful because there's a lot at stake in each game, especially the first one." Venezuela forward Jose Salomon Rondon
