Finally Sony Apologise To Nigeria (but Rejected)
« on: September 25, 2009, 02:24 AM »

A team of management staff of Sony International in Abuja on Thursday apologised to Nigeria on a recent television advertisement which portrayed the country in bad light.

The Managing Director of Sony, Gulf-Mid-East and Africa, Osamu Miura, who
led a team from the company to the Minister of Information and Communications, Dora Akunyili, said the company had since withdrawn the advert.

The advertisement, sponsored by Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) on Sept. 1, on the new Play Station 3, was broadcast only in the US and Canada.

"Immediately after learning that it contained statements that might have offended some individuals, SCEA took steps to discontinue the advertisement.

"By Sept. 7, all replacement work was completed and the original advertisement has not been aired,'' he said.

Mr. Miura said the company was "committed to respecting human rights, appreciating diversity and conducting business activities with fairness and integrity.

"Nigeria and Nigerian people are very important to us.''

Responding, Mrs. Akunyili said although Nigeria welcomed the apology, Sony should rephrase the words of the formal letter addressed to her on the matter.

"I have some reservations about that apology but apology is apology because the apology says there are some people who are offended.

"We made a statement from the Nigerian Government, we are offended and the good people of this country are offended.

''But the apology (letter) says there may be some people who are offended.

"I don't want to say we reject the apology but I want to say that we want that apology rewritten, it has to be clear enough for Nigerians to feel comfortable with it,'' she said.

The minister warned that the Federal Government would no longer tolerate the defamation of the country's name or nationals from any group.

Similarly, she complained that the country was unhappy with District 9, a movie, which Sony Corporation was distributing.

They might as well apologise for D9 as well cos that was even worse. But I guess that would be too much to wish for.

I don't know what the fuss is about. What is so difficult about a written apology? Where did they do this apology? Was it in a news conference or in some backyard? It seems a written statement simply makes it more official.

If you do not mind me asking, whats the difference between the bolded comment you made above and the commercial that was put out by Sony?

I hope you know your remark is not only derogatory but it is also denigrating.

Its very wrong to REJECT PEOPLE'S APOLOGY. The most civilised thing to do is to ACCEPT it but advice them to publish a written one. Its a very Bad omen for her rebranding project.

The poster did not say Dora rejected the apology, she simply said she has her reservations about the apology and that they should rewrite it. SIMPLE.

Since when did rejecting a half baked, lukwarm and probably condescending apology become wrong??

And can you please explain how rejecting an apology makes the rebranding project look bad?

that's My Sony,
in Oct last year, the most anticipated game of 2008 had a song that  angered the entire Muslim community, Sony had to recall all the game in retail and wholesale shops, thereby pushing the lunch date by 1 week.
Everytime, Companies do make little mistake, afterall, the entire Muslim community is 10 times bigger than Nigeria.
but, the most important   thing is that, THE MESSAGE HAS ALREADY BEEN PASSED,
  SMALL WORD = MASSIVE IMPACT.

It is still going to be Half Baked, Lukewarm, and probably condescending still, even when written. Not sure what you are trying to believe here.  It is obvious at this point that SONY has little respect for what the government is doing. If it did, it would have written an apology in the first place.

@Poster, the so called apology has been tucked away in a small corner of the SONY site for weeks now.  Wink

@ Sky blue,

I dont see you as being more civilised than Prof Dora,
the problem with us Nigerians is that we find it dificult accepting our own.  If Nigeria tries as little what Sony did,  Abroad, somebody is bound to be jailed for it.  Besides its high time the Oyibos realise that Niaja should not be taken for granted.  Let us all join hands to promote the rebranding project , we need it.
Am not a racist but let Oyibos know that second class treatment is no longer acceptable by us much less in our own domain

I never bought into the Temp-secretary-scribbled-apology that was posted on the Sony website a few weeks ago and i still do not buy the most current one. Hence, my happiness the apology was rejected.

In response to the bolded bit. I believe Dora's action and stance will send message a clear to other corporations and entities who think they can get away with insulting Nigeria. I bet Sony thought it won't be a big deal.

Now, whether they take heed to the message is another thing. But the point is you can't insult Nigeria and get away with it.

I don't know how we treat issues sometimes. The report says they sponsored an advert and it was on air in US and Canada to tarnish Nigerians image.

Now he has gone underground to apologize and those he has advertised to will not know that he has apologized, so is only the written apology that can be used against him.

Though we know that Nigeria is bad, but that does not give any body from any where power to start writing against us, remember Nigerians name is at stake.

This minister is doing her job in this issue and you people are still complaining and demeaning her efforts.

And we expect Nigeria to get better and get the respect it deserves . . . not with you lots sorry.

You are the same group that will critisize her for not standing up to Sony.

Pele l'ako, o l'abo. If you tell me 'sorry' just to shut me up, I will not accept that kinda apology.

for your info, what Dora has done is her job and she was right in what she did. If u dont appreciate urslf, one one is going to appreciate u. other nations shld learnt to respect Nigeria and shld not be taking us for granted in everything.

At least we know that we are not all scammers or fraudsters, there is no country that does not have its own level of crime.

Lol . . . . Here is the problem. These folks know they are dealing with a government that does next to nothing to fix the problems in, and outside of, it's country, but is quick to CRY foul when the situation is mentioned in anyway. So, if we actually expect any of these entities to take our warnings/words seriously, we might be in for a big surprise. It might actually result in them completely ignoring us completely. Who knows.

I personally do not see anything wrong with the ad. In my opinion, what it did was wake some Nigerians up to the reality of the situation with the Nigerian image outside of Nigeria, something SONY and other corps are not responsible for, no matter how we want to blame them for it.

This is a case of demanding respect at all cost without actually stepping out to EARN it. What SONY has done is show it has little respect for the Nigerian government and no amount of writing will change that at this point.
