Yar’Adua approves new pay scale for doctors From JACOB EDI, ABUJA Thursday, September 24, 2009 President Yar'Adua •Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has approved Medical Service Scale (MSS) for medical doctors in the employment of the Federal Government. A press statement issued by Niyi Ojuolape, Special Assistant (Communications) to the Health Minister said the consideration and approval of the new MSS followed extensive deliberations and negotiations between the Federal Government’s team and the Nigerian Medical Association on the salary structure and allowances of medical and dental practitioners including Specialist Allowance, Call Duty Allowance and Teaching Allowance etc. According to the statement, a dialogue was on-going on between the representatives of other professionals within the health sector and a Federal Government team under the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Labour to secure a similar package to address the welfare of other health professionals employed by the Federal Government. “It must be noted that there is already an approval in principle by the Presidency in this regard, but the details thereof is still the subject of the on-going deliberations, the process of which has actually begun a long time ago. It is expected that we will come to an agreement very soon on the specifics of the package, further to which we will secure the approval of the president for a long lasting package that will address the issue of the welfare of the entire health sector. “The presidential approval of the MSS is a fulfillment of the undertaking given by the Honourable Minister of Health that the agreement reached with the NMA will have received the necessary approval before the end of September, 2009.” In the same vein, the minister wants to seize this opportunity to assure other professionals in the sector and indeed all Nigerians that as soon as the welfare package being currently negotiated is agreed upon, the approval of the president will be sought and obtained in a very short time.” . http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2009/sept/24/national-24-09-2009-006.htm

what we docs want is a circular passed wit details, signing is not enough.the truth is this might turn out to be just another well publicised scam so that even if we do go on strike come sept.30,the govt will whip up public sentiment by saying "after approving a new salary scale they still went on strike" knowing fully well that signin and implementin are two different things,

Mark of our useless, quack journalists. The fool could not be bothered to find out the figures in his report. There is no way an editor in the UK will accept that for print.

Exactly. if he bothered to report this development, he should have found out the figures. . . unless the govt is up to something and has just given a word-of-mouth recommendation to implement a new pay scale (The article stated that 'it is an approval in principle and the finer details are still ongoing). It is not completely formalized yet. That one be say arguements are continuing

No, this is not about not being able to find out the figures. It is just a typical Nigerian journalistic practice. If 'it is an approval in principle and the finer details are still ongoing' then there must be some indicative figures that are provisionally being approved. A journalist with a brain cell in his head will report this indicative figures. But a large proportion of Nigerian journalists are just hungry quacks, not qualified to do the job.

As a doctor, what I need is facts and figures. I hope this is not another political statement on our national dailies. I would have preffered if then release was from the Presidency and not the Minister of Health. Anyway, if it is not implemented not approved come Sept 30, We r going on strike.

This is a rily gud news for doctors and doctors-to-be. But wat i want to know is that is this Medical Service Scale just for doctors working in federal hospitals? or for both state and federal hospitals?, cos i heard it cuts across both state and federal hospitals. How true is that?
