Lagos: Man, wife differ in court over daughter's circumcision rites BY OMOBOLA TOLU-KUSIMO
A YOUNG mother of two, Mrs. Rashidat Adebayo, facing the battle of her life to save her marriage before a Lagos State Customary Court, which her husband has approached for a divorce.
http://odili.net/news/source/2009/sep/26/20.htmlThe Plaintiff facing, Mr. Taofeek Adebayo, wants his union with his estranged wife dissolved on grounds that she is stubborn, disobedient, quarrelsome and always threatening to pour acid on him.
But Mrs. Adebayo denied these allegations, saying she fell out with her husband and his relations because she had opposed their resolve to circumcise her one-year-old daughter.She explained that her three-year-old first daughter was circumcised against her will by her husband, who said their practice was a family tradition.Mrs. Adebayo said after several of disagreements with her husband over the matter, he abandoned her and the children in January this year and has since refused to pay 2009 house rent.
Asked whether she would like to divorce her husband, Mrs. Adebayo said God's wish should prevail in the matter.
Apart from a divorce, Mr. Adebayo also seeks an perpetual court injunction to restrain the respondent from acts of fighting, provocation, intimidation and threat to his life.
The court before president, Mr. A. O. Oguntolu adjourned the matter for judgment to October 11, 2009.
