Age Matters…

They’re both plump. They both love eating, and each other. Not necessarily in that order. Seeing them together at the dining table, tucking away into the wife’s delicious cooking, you catch yourself thinking, “This is how it should be”. No model bodies, no overt display of affection, no glamorous lifestyles. Just a very obvious contentment in each other. The traditional picture of a happy married couple.

Yet they are not traditional. She is eight years older than him. Theirs was a college romance, but non-typical at the very least. For she was his professor.
“That first day when she walked into the class and smiled at all of us, really smiled at us, I knew I had to get to know her better,” he says a trifle smugly. But didn’t her age bother him? “I never really thought about it. She felt so right that I wasn’t about to risk losing her for some stupid notions about age.” She says she had reconciled herself to spinsterhood until along came this gawky student with “big specs, an awkward gait, sometimes a stutter too”. She had been adamant about not going in for an arranged marriage. “But I’d never met anyone I liked enough to get married to”. Her student admirer did frighten her off at first. “But all the five years that he was in college, he continued to keep trying to talk to me, be friends, no matter how off hand I was with him.”

His quiet persistence finally won her over. “Some people did warn me that such marriages don’t work,” she says. “But by then I was beyond caring and moreover my parents were supportive.” His mother was not quite keen on the idea but “I brought her around” he says.

Do they ever worry that years down the line they might feel out of sync? “We haven’t had a problem in these five years of marriage. I don’t see why that should change. Moreover I believe that a good couple ages together,” he says confidently.

She is not so sure. “But doesn’t every marriage face that risk? That the partners might grow apart?”
Switch to another marriage. Anandita is twenty-five, beautiful and vivacious. Deepak is forty, charming and a “confirmed nonconformist”. “Her Dad accused me of cradle-snatching. I told him his daughter was doing all the snatching,” he laughs. No parental support here. “We eloped.” Anandita’s parents are yet to come around to accepting Deepak. His parents on the other hand have become “quite friendly” with Anandita. “I think they were very relieved that their son got married at all,” says Anandita.

So what makes them tick? “We give each other lots of space.” Anandita thinks longer and comes up with, “We complement each other. If I am hot-headed he makes me take a balanced perspective. He has lots of patience”.
Deepak pitches in with, “She gives me the freedom to think, to hold my own opinions. She doesn’t feel that one has to do or say something just because that’s the done thing. She is not a wifey wife. I wouldn’t have been able to settle down with any one else.”

What about ten years down the line? Will they have grown apart? “No worries about that,” Anandita laughs. “Deepak is tons more bohemian than me.” They don’t plan to have children “because the world is overpopulated enough”. That’s something both of them had planned long before they met each other. “Just one of the things that goes to show how well-suited we are to each other,” grins Deepak.
Who am I to argue? I have just been convinced -- age doesn’t matter. Not a bit. Only love does.

Well u hav a simple case. I'm 19 nd i was had a relationship wit a 27yr old girl once u can imagine d age difference but that wasn't the main issue. D issue was that we both understood what we were going into. My question to u is r u sure he understands what he's gettin into or is it as a result of peer pressure. TALK to him, let him understand b/4 offering ur friendship.
