"Behind Closed Doors" is an obligatory element of politics and as long as that remains all opinions expressed here lack the basis for believability. Nigeria is not the place where any means to a political end is humanized. I have lost hope!!!

My fellow Nairalanders,
I was disappointed that DUKE has to step down.
It was all the plan of OBJ.
I wish DUKE the best of luck.

@Duke Supporters:

Don't be disappointed or get discouraged.

For over 2 months now, I've tried my best to educate you folks and no one seemed to understand my point.

Mr Duke has done the right thing.
He's a fine man and very smart. He knew the position wasn't for him. Infact he did not want the position at this time. He has accomplished his goal for now. This goal was to make noise and get his name out there for Nigerian people. Now that he's known by many, come 2011, he will be bold and more matured to contest with the big boys.

Hence, don't be discouraged; your man will be back strong and more experienced.
His time is around the corner.

May God bless Nigeria.

All Good Things,
Let me start with an apology for the long silence since the last post on Friday last week. You would agree with me that the manner in which things took a different turn over the weekend calls for a lot of introspection. But know this, that on Friday morning I was optimistic about the successful eventuality of picking the PDP ticket for the presidential elections. However, by Friday evening, I was no longer a candidate. The gap in between is best left for the PDP hierarchy to give details.
A lot of mixed emotions have greeted me since last Friday since the announcement of my withdrawal from the race to pick the party’s nomination for presidential office. Some of you have expressed anger, some disgust while others have expressed empathy. I understand the different dispositions which I believe stem from the information made available to you all.
Let me emphasise that in party politics, the party to which one belongs takes pre-eminence in the deciding of who goes for what office. If you had read my previous notes on this presidential journey, I had stated that I was going before my party to seek their consent to contest for the post of President. When I made my declaration on November 7, it was under this purview that I indicated my interest in the candidacy for the post of President. By doing so, I subjected myself to the supremacy of the party, in this case the PDP. As a serving governor of a state, belonging to the National Executive Committee, and being a prospective presidential candidate to be sponsored by the party, I am thus bound by any decision that the party’s top echelon may take before or after the primaries. The party’s decision last Friday to zone the presidency to the North, hard as it may be to accept, must be respected.
Does this in any way diminish the ideals which I stand for? By no means. The election to presidential office would have accelerated the achievement of our paradigm for a great Nigeria. However, the fact that one is not able to attain that office, therefore, only slows down the accomplishment of that dream. But we must still pursue that dream slowly but surely. In this regard I implore you to remain steadfast in the continued pursuit of achieving the great Nigeria of our dreams. We must have it in mind that the attainment of our dreams can be achieved, not only by the attainment of political office, but through the collective will of all. We all must unite to develop that will, to make it stronger and surer.
As a committed member of the PDP, I must invite you to lend your support to our party’s flagbearer, my friend and colleague, Alhaji Umar Yar’Adua, Governor of Katsina State as he marches towards the presidency in 2007. Before and after the nomination on Saturday last week, he had shown me tremendous friendship. This I shall cherish for a long time. Please join me in congratulating him on this significant assignment.
In deference to the presidential campaign of my friend and in order not to constitute an alter ego to the main agenda of the party to which I belong I regret to say we can no longer continue interaction at the level which we have done in the past few days until such a time that it would be practical to do so. I am most grateful for your unalloyed support – the time you all have taken to make one or two contributions on this blog. The comments have, for most of it, been very pleasant and useful. The camaraderie has been unprecedented. I shall definitely miss the interface. Please let the communications which you have developed among you, individually, continue. It would definitely help in building the hope that was begun. Thank you dearly.
I remain yours truly, Donald Duke.

The Presidency was not zoned as some of you have erroneously mentioned. Rochas Okorocha still ran, and he is not a northerner. He ended up coming second. Duke realized that he would not win as the party bigwigs decided to support Yar Adua. Unfortunately Duke played like a sore loser and decided to remove his hat from the VP running, and went publicly to claim the presidency has been zoned. From all I've heard Duke is a good candidate but his immaturity surely proves he had negatives. Wearing your emotions on your sleeves is a political misnomer. He should have made nice, gotten the vice presidency, and in the event Yar Adua's term is up he pushes for his campaign once more, all in the process keeping himself in the limelight political stratosphere. Now he will graduate into life after "governer", and who knows how political trends will be after next dispensation (whomever wins, Yar Adua, Buhari etc.).

I am so happy I haven't seen that many bigoted ethnocentric remarks on this topic. We are getting better in Narialand. We should tone our responses in moderation as Nigerians and not as Southerners or Northerners. Let peace and Understanding reign. Merry Christmas to my Chrisitian Brothers/Sisters, and Eid Mubarak to the Muslim Brothers and Sisters. Happy New Year to All!

Kazaure, I am afraid that is not very accurate. The presidency was zoned to the north by the PDP. If the Presence of Rochas in the race meant it was not zoned how about in 1999 when Abubakar Rimi ran against OBJ.
Rochas was in the race just for fun of it and to position himself for political recognition, he is presently spearheading Yar'adua's campaign in the south-east.

Quote

Respecting party wishes and explaining to your fans why you quit is not the act of a sore looser. I personally think he displayed maturity.
If what should be a party election primaries turns out to be a coronation ceremony, what is the point taking part in it when you know its mere formality. All the fans of Donald Duke are absolutely proud of him, no matter what. PDP should bury their head in shame for preventing the rare gem.
Like a leader who knows what he is doing, what was his next act after quiting the primaries? he went straight home to commision a metro rail line from magret ekpo international airport to tinapa bussiness resort.

Right now a serious carnival is taking place in calarbar where people both Nigerian and Foreigners are enjoying christmas. That is the quality of leadership we have just lost.

Nobody will care about whether the president is from North or South, all we want is quality leadership. The world is moving very fast and we are going backwards. Telling us some is a rebel or prudent with finacial resources and yet we will never see the person on national TV talking about the economy and how he plans to run it in this digital age is too huge a gamble for Nigeria to take.  I am sorry to say it but I think Yar'adua is not the best choice for 2007 Nigeria.

There is hardly anywhere else in the world that a tarciturn presidential aspirant will be the front runner other than in Nigeria where leaders are imposed by the powers that be. Yaradua has nothing else going for him other than he is the crown prince and I feel so ashamed that a thing like this is still happening in 2007 Nigeria.
