Just avoid the bad ones (the ones I know of are 1and1 and godaddy) and you should be fine. Remember to ask questions like, "do you support the latest versions php (or insert your back end language here) and mysql? how many databases do I get? What of bandwidth and space? how many email addresses am I limited to? how many emails can I send out in a month (assuming you want a shared vs dedicated server and would like to send out newsletters)?"
If you find answers to the questions above satisfactory, then unless anyone else has something to add, you should be good to go.
good luck and let us know how it works out for you.
