ASUU Orders Varsities To Resume On Monday - says FG Must Not Back Out Of The Deal

Joe Nwachukwu, Owerri - 10.10.2009

Following its executive council meeting on Friday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its members to resume work on Monday.

The union also said it hoped that negotiation with each governing council of the universities will resume simultaneously as the lecturers resume on that day.

President of ASUU, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie, who disclosed this after the council meeting said ASUU suspended the strike to create a cordial atmosphere for peaceful conclusion of negotiation with the Federal Government.

He said that if the Federal Government fails to fulfil the agreement, the strike would resume.

He urged the Federal Government to conclude agreement with the other unions in the university system and avoid any action that will destroy the existing harmony.

“The struggle for a better education system will continue collectively with patriotic forces until we achieve the desired goals in a country of educated citizens struggling to overcome economic and political backwardness and striving to survive in 21st century,” he said.

He called for minimum standard in funding of university.

“The ASUU leadership did not start the strike because of what they were after. It was to enthrone a working national policy for the education system,” Awuzie said, while he also commended the Federal Government for the amnesty given to the militants in the Niger Delta region.

However, fielding questions from journalists in Owerri after announcing the suspension of the strike, Awuzie maintained that maintained that the crisis between ASUU and the Federal Government was not yet over.

According to him, the ASSU decided to suspend the strike action for two weeks to enable the union to discuss more and sign an agreement already reached with the Federal Government.

Big lie, ASUU has no power to order universities to resume. That is the jurisdiction of the university senate and most of them are of the opinion that 2 weeks ceasefire is too short to start asking students to travel up and down.

all schools would go for strike by the command of ASUU but not all schools would agree to come for a two week lecture and return back to base.

Let them keep deceiving themselves.

So in other words it is the university senate that has been on strike. Please dont be too fast to flaunt your ignorance. Understand the functions of ASUU as a union and the  functions of a university senate as a governing body within a university. These are some of the reasons we attend/attended university (to get generally educated) but unfortunately the system is so messed up that universities train a bunch of quater baked graduates. No disrespect.

Grin Shocked Sad ASUU and its leadership should stop trying to paint themselves as angels. This is just a ploy to make the FG look like the people at fault.
WHATEVER IS THEIR STRUGGLE, WE UNDERSTAND AND THE NIGERIAN STUDENTS WILL GIVE THEIR SUPPORT IF THEY FIGHT TO THE FINISH ONCE AND FOR ALL.
AND IN A NUTSHELL, THEY SHOULD STOP PUNISHING THE STUDENTS. GBAM!

It is a pity that ASUU and FG think they are dealing with fools by suspending the strike for two weeks, so that we can jump arround and shout HURRAY! THE STRIKE IS OVER while they both achieve their goals. My fellow nigerian students let us just cross our legs and wait till the two weeks elapse before we start celebrating. One more thing, this is supposed to be an information ground and not where we will rain insults on each other, let us constructively correct ourselves. NO ONE KNOWS IT ALL, YOU KNOW Grin Grin

Rell 2 I think u're are d half baked graduate (that is if you've actually graduated). Why do you attack people like that. Granted the guy did not present his point well but that does not make him half baked. The fact remains that the strike is still ongoing. What is just happening is the negotiatons has gone from Abuja to the various universities. But as for students, remain at home because
1) The lecturers will be busy in the negotiation meetings
2) SSANU and NASU are still on strike. Do you think any academic/administrative work can be done without them. I even learnt they are ready to lock down the various schools. So how will the students return.

There's no way FG will negotiate. There's no celebration after two weeks because just right then will they go on another lengthy strike and this time, it'll be longer than what has been experienced so far. It's just sickening how the educational system operates back in Nigeria, but very sad as well we have a government that doesn't care.

If they had wanted to negotiate, they'd have waited and finish that before eventually asking students to return to school, and what's the hurry to wait for two or three weeks when months have been wasted on the strike?!

@rells2

You drew up a wrong conclusion as i never said the university senate is on strike. The issue on ground is that 2 weeks is too short for any university to ask students to come back. Lets hope the FG signs the agreement within the shortest possible time.

ASUU is a big dissapointment. They are playing on the intelligence of innocent nigerians.Talking about patrioticism, are patriots group of people who put the academic situation of fragile state in jeopady?I will call them disgruntled elements. The most annoying being that no reasonable outcome emanates from all the srike actions.

Sorry if I appeared to insult you, I really didn't mean it like that. But however this is a medium to inform and educate ourselves. We should always try and be sure of our facts before we present them.
