Five weeks ago i paid for Honda 94 bulldug to a Dealer Agent in coutonu through one sister of mine. Before i paid the money into his account, he had told me that i will get my car one week after payment. After the week expired, it as been the boader is too tight, newly deployed custom officers are disturbing. After like three weeks, the story change that he need to obtain a custom duty pappers for the car to put the car on the road bla bla bla. up till now he have not bring my car to me. Now i have no doubt that he is going to dupe me bc my sister have gone to see him in his house in coutonu and he told her he had bought the car and the car is in one village in Abeocuta ( am trying to remember the village name, which is very close to the boader, not idi iroko). He also told me this. I decided to ask for me money and he his willingly to send my money to my account N0. Or I would have to be patient before my car comes to me. I am in Kogi state. I paid 700k. Pls great deallers. I need your advice on this.
This are what he told me. Initially, boader is too tight, custom duties, original custome duties, custom are disturbing. Are all this true ? Does that means for the past 5 wks no body import any car from coutonu ? should I collect my money ? should I still be patient, Did he even bought the car ? I need your experience advice. The dealer is not a NL member. Thank

I will advice you to be careful. 1. If the car is duly imported, what has the tight boarder got to do with anything, cos it means the cars is probably being smuggled in, and pls, watchout.
2. This one of the reasons why it is always good to deal with people that are reliable.
3. Dont always cos you wanna save some little change use anyone to sell you a ride.
Car is an investment and i am sure yu worked hard for your money.
IF you can collect your money back, go ahead.

@bisifunke i feel yr situation. pls collect yr money at once! if it were in the bank, interests will accrue. don't b misled by "cars are always cheaper in cotonou". sometimes cars are very xpensive in cotonou - compared with the same brand here. resolve to buy yr car from d postings on nairaland. and may u run into a honest, god-fearing nairaland auto dealer

I have never felt comfortable with this Cotonou matter. Even the way the cars are driven into Nigeria will put you off. The business is not LEGAL. I hope you get your money back.

Im sure he must have told you the car was at Owode or somewhere like that These are some of the tricks of these smugglers when they are busy trading with your money, while you keep sweating out the suspense. I bet you, you wont get your money readily if you request for it. They usually wait until some other sucker give them money to buy a vehicle for them and they'd use it to give you some part payment or they might sell off your car with profit and pay you off. This is the disadvantage of trying to save money by smuggling cars through the border. If your post came earlier, I'd have advised you to stay clear of these smugglers and buy your car at extra cost in naija. You cant call the cops on him since you are involved in illegality and they know this. As it is, the best thing to do is to make out time and go trace the vehicle. I'm willing to bet it will still be at the stand where you bought it at Cotonou. I believe it'll do your blood pressure a lot of good if you sight the car at least. If you are patient enough, you will get it. All the story you are hearing is delay tactics. He has traded with the part of money you advanced him.

My guy, just try and get your money back and trade with reasonable auto dealers.
Re: A car is not an investment but a liability.
It could go either depending on how you look at it.
Investment: Red n Yellow cab managers (or transporters like ABC, Agofure, Edegbe etc) would never agree its a liability , your guess is as good as mine. Liability: From an economist's point of view it's a liablity because of its depreciation and running cost.
There are some necessary "liabilities" that enhance your comfort.

SO SORRY ABOUT YOUR PLIGHT I THINK IT IS OBVIOUS THAT U'VE FALLEN INTO THE WRONG HAND, LET ME START BY BRINGING TO THE FORE SOME BASIC INFORMATIONS THAT ARE VERY TRUE ABOUT CAR IMPORTATION FROM COTONU. GOING BY THE INFORMATION U POSTED, U ACTUALLY BOUGHT A 1994 CAR MADE WHICH IS NOT DUTIFULL AND BY IMPLICATION IT CAN NEVER BE LEGALLY CLEARD, MEANING THAT IT WILL COME INTO NIGERIA THRU D BUSH WHILE CUSTOMS ARE GIVEN THEIR SETTLEMENT. ANOTHER THING I WOULD LIKE TO EDUCATE U ABOUT IS DAT NO M,MATTER HOW SLUGISH your AGENT IN COTONU MAY BE D MOVEMENT OF CARS FRM COTONU TO EITHER SEME OR IDIROKO BORDER WILL NOT TAKE LONGER THAN 3 WORKING DAYS PROVIDED ALL FINANCIAL CONDITIONS HAVE BN MET. THEREFORE I AM OF THE OPINION THAT U RETRIEVE your MONEY WITHOUT ANY FURTHER DELAY COS PROBABILITY DAT THE CAR HAS BN BOUGHT IS 1/10. FILL FREE TO BELL ME IF I AM FURTHER NEEDED. 08024150593

Does not only enhance your comfort. I dont know about in Nigeria oh, however, there are some jobs in the western world where you will be told u must have a car, so tell me, is that a liability or an investment. All investment are not direct, Pal, some are indirect. Dont lemme derail the thread. Poster, how far, hope you have been able to get the ride or get your money back.

Your point here will hold if the vehicle has been bought and cleard at Cotonou! The poster was not very explicit on the transaction. Seems the dude just paid money into the dealer's account, who he did not know but was referred by his sister. in which case, your 3 day deadline hardly count!

You yourself should know better the risk involved in this kind of business and the games this dealers play, for all you he has not even bought the car yet since u ve not seen it. The painful thing is that you cant call in the police due to the kind of deal you are involved in.

@poster, too bad.this is the second bad report il be reading about cotonou in two days.from all indications u have indeed fallen into the wrong hands.i am a car dealer and i also buy cars from cotonou.i have helped series of nairalanders to buy cars from cotonou and they will all attest to it when i say that the purchase and delivery of their cars have not exceeded one week max, from the date of purchase.i will not dispute the fact that so many car dealers are dubiuos.and im aware of so many tactics,if not all, that they play.in your own case,i smell dupe. If you are buying a car from cotonou, after paying for the car,you start the clearing that same day.and if you have a good agent and you make full payment for clearing instantly, the car can leave the park same day for escort.if your agent doesnt get the papers done that day,it leaves the park the next day,or two days after(worse case scenario).and when it gets to escort,it leaves for seme border the day after.by the time it gets to seme border,if your money is intact, you pay the duty at the ECOWAS building there otherwise,u fly it.although, attimes the road is tough, but at most in 3days after, your car should arrive lagos. If you calculate all these, its just about 1week. Now,your dealer has lied to u because its absolutely impossible for him to pay customs duty out of the 700k given to him for that car.and what is your car still doing in a village close to the boarder?this shows that he's not plain with u and theres more to it.its a pity he lives in cotonou,il have suggested that you launch a complain at the police station and get him arrested.such people are the cause of the negative thoughts which so many have in buying cars from cotonou.ive read so many even saying that all cotonou cars passes through the bush.seme road is an express road without one single pothole.its smoother than many lagos raods.except that u take your car in through idi-iroko which is rough, and i wouldnt advice anyone to go through there. My advice,at this juncture is that you should create time and go to wherever he says your car is and see things for yourself first.then you should plead with him(use diplomacy first),to help u bring in the car.and thats even if theres any car there.but u have to be patient first, before using force.and make sure that refund should be your last option, cos he will pay u back in such a way that u wont be able to account for that money again. meanwhile,in all,i wish u luck.

The problem with you people is plain ignorance and corruption. You know that a 1994 model car is not legal in Nigeria yet you went to pay for someone to bring it in from cotonu. Don't start playing any naivetivity at all at all because i'm sure you knew they had to smuggle the car in. Govt said minimum 8yrs yet people keep flouting the law. You are the same one that will say leaders are corrupt yet you are worse than them. Why give yourself unnecessary headaches. Do you also know that you can not legally register this car in nigeria? You will have to bribe people. Why do you think the Police always stops people that drive older model tokunbos nowadays? They know you smuggled it in and most likely have fake papers. If you can't afford to buy a regular 8yr old tokunbo, save your money and hit the freaking BRT

Funny how people describe cars as 'liabilities' solely due to the depreciating value and cost of maintenance. However these same people hesitate to describe their aged parents as liabilities also. And that's just plain funny. Having a car saves you time. And we know time is money. A car also often serves to reduce the stress of bus hopping and heat stroke from the sun. And we all know health is wealth. Don't mind me jo, i'm just having fun
