Pipeline vandalisation is just a display of the level of corruption in Nigeria, people know the dangers and still go ahead and do it for selfish reasons. Just Like fraud, 419, yahoo yahoo and all other vices Nigerians are known for.

Actually about pipelines being underground, to the best of my knowledge, 90% of pipelines in Nigeria are underground. The only way u could know that there are pipelines in that area is through the NNPC signs warning you . it takes proffessionals to vandalise any pipeline in Nigeria

Its always easy to blame the next guy. The supplied link said " pipeline punctured by thieves, officials said". One wonders how 'officials' came up with that so quickly. I've had enough reasons not to believe what 'officials' always come up with immediately, following such incidence. If its a consolation to anyone, pipeline can puncture on their own but again that does not justify people rushing to scoop fuel from what they knew will eventually lead to death. May the bereaved find solace in God.

Well, confidently does not in any way mean certainty. They are not made with diamond (even if they are) hence, they can puncture on their own ~ old age, lack of maintenance, etc.

@ynot, i am no Kupolokun but i know a little about pipelines in Nigeria.
i stand on the fact that pipelines can only be damaged by professionals. Have u not heard that most vandals are sacked NNPC workers? And have you ever seen the vandalisation sites, they dig massive holes before they get to the pipelines.

I believe we have oil workers on this forum, can they please enlighten us more about pipeline vandalisation.

where were the police? where were d nnpc officilas? where was the lagos state govt???
but when will nigerians be wise? how many times must a something like this happen before our people will stop vandalizing pipelines?

some people said its poverty, but i ask does poverty make u stupid?
some say d govt is 2 blame but i ask, does vandalising property right all d wrongs?

too many questions but no answer

u have  a point piplines don't burst on their own most times people dig through but at times they do rupture because they have a life span and shouldbe maintain regularly , u can tell me shell and other maintain their but does nnpc maintain theirs?

i have alway asked my self how do this folk that vandalise pipeline know exactly what product runs in a particular pipe because the way the pipes are laid they are laid in succession of 4 or 5 lumps together andthey could be carrying different products

the situation according to mamput is poverty, lik ei was asking some one yesterday those day s we enter buses that they would tie excessive amount of load that the boots wont close and ur eyes are watery from co emissions how many of us have died from co- emissions none yet to myknowledge

now the govt crooks have spent millions in party primaries i was in abuja and i saw it my self. those amount of monies would have transformed a lot of peoples lives

if u doubt it go to transcorp hilton abuja and ask how much a particular failed aspirant hired all free rooms

it ran into millions - we need to invest our money in our people

modups

u should thank God whenu wake up u see food to eat
there are folks in this nigeria that have not eaten for days and no hope of eaten with children at home crying

tell me if u don't have hope of getting money and u see an easy way out of tapping pipeline and selling to at least feed this period wont u do it

hunger can drive people nuts and our politicians know it that s why they r running a system of politics by hunger

make the people hungry then give them small gifts they wont know their rights anymore

for instance why would a govt tarr a road we all praise them whereas good roads is not a priviledge but our rights
don't u and pay tax

kaecy5 i thank God everyday no doubt bout that.

we all know that d govt of d day is selfish and corrupt, no doubt bout that either
we also know that poverty is real in nigeria

but what i don't understand is why people would engage in something so dangerous as vandalising pipelines knowing full well that it would most probably end in an explosion and death.

we might as well say its right 4 armed robbers to rob and kill due to d harsh economic climate as well!

The question is, why has there been a flipping fuel shortage for the past 4 or 5 days now? What the hell is happening?

Re: Another Fuel Blast In Lagos:

@shockreaction, good question.
Livi Ajonuma, the GM, Public Affairs of NNPC claimed yesterday that some other pipelines had been vandalized and were being repaired throughout last week and that was why fuel was scarce.
I blame NNPC and i blame the people as well but the truth is if there had been no fuel scarcity, this whole thing would not have happened!
If nnpc knew they would be carrying out repairs on some pipelines, why didnt they make enough provision to store adequate supplies knowing there would be much vehicular activity because of the festive period?
Residents in the area claimed that two tankers loaded fuel at the burst pipeline with police officials and that nnpc was informed of the burst pipeline before it caught fire but they said there was nothing they could do?
from http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2006/dec/27/national-27-12-2006-01.htm
"The Group Managing Director, the NNPC, Funsho Kukpolokun, who arrived the scene at about 1p.m, admitted that NNPC had received complaints from the area but added that it was not the duty of NNPC to protect pipelines. Saying that it was the duty of the police to protect pipeline, he said that the police were obviously overwhelmed by other security issues. He insisted that pipeline protection should be a collective effort by all Nigerians."

@gentleone
thats what they would have you believe!u know how things work in this country of our's,some people with oil blocks are tring to make an enormous amount of profit this holiday season and that explains why with the scarcity of fuel the prices skyrocket!!the situation is pitiful ???may God bless the lives that where lost, its such a shame that we keep loosing innocent lives due to the unworthiness of our supposedly unbalanced government! It has happened again. Another pipeline blasts occured at Abule Egba, Lagos. It has been reported that over 100 people had been roasted to death. My Perspective: What is responsible for this? Poverty or what? Going out in Lagos city has been “war” because you have to pay 3 times of normal transport fare. Government should find solution to these blasts and fuel scarcity in NIgeria

Its not poor Lagosians that needed fuel for their cars that were caught in the inferno, its greedy area boys that are trying to make money for themselves.

yes o, the poor lagosiana wait for the areaboys to sell to them. they  know better thatn to move close to the vandalisation site .

Re: Another Fuel Blast In Lagos:

@eniola, anybody that has lived in Lagos should know how it works. How many police men would u need to stop hundreds of area boys punching their way to the oil pit to scoop free fuel in Lagos? These area boys (thugs) are not educated enough to know that ordnary friction between plastic containers that they are using to scoop this fuel can cause fire especially on a PMS (Premium motor spirit) pipeline. Also, PMS has both qualities of fuel and gas and can ignite fire from miles away, the best option is to stay away from a pipeline when there are rumours of vandalisation.

The residents of Abule-egba know better than to go near the pipelines themselves, thats even if they find their way there.

And also a phone as they say can easly cause fire explortion,  what really baffles me, is a lady who still carrie a baby, went ahead to scoop fuel,  she was really burnt at the scene later was taken to the hospital, i got to the street and everybody where really crying to my greatest suprise this lady gave up ! first poverty caused them to do that, but on the other hand they did that due to greediness. Even if you are poor and not greedy knowing that it is risky and dangerous. but 80% of the blame goes to the goverment. that my opinion

fine, if the pipelines were not vandalized, there wont be scarcity and fine, its not a days job but they should have seen it coming knowing how festive periods are and should have made adequate provision for enough supplies!
and they had better find a way of protecting the pipelines so that they don't keep getting vandalized Angry
