New police uniform not for all - Onovo

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ogbonnaya Onovo, has said that not all policemen will wear the new police uniform as it is meant to spot out senior officers from other ranks in the public.

The police boss stated this in a telephone chat with the Daily Independent from Abuja at the weekend against the backdrop of agitation by members of the rank and file that they want to wear the new uniform.

According to Onovo, "this is not something that should bring bickering and grumbling in the force because right from the word go, the idea was to make officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) differ from members of the junior rank.

"Those that mooted the idea clearly stated that the new uniform is only for the officers. So my colleagues in the rank and file should wait. When they become officers, they can wear it."

He added that the new uniform is not for free to the members of the officer corps as they purchase it with their money.

"The only difference is that all of us gets it from one source and this is to keep to the quality and the colour. We would not like a situation where police officers are gathering and you notice that some uniforms may be lighter than the others or deeper than the others. Since it is called uniform, it must be uniform."

Investigation by Daily Independent has revealed that the new officer's uniform which is of a very high quality is manufactured locally, although it is said to be almost of the same quality with that of the British police.

"It is whether resistant, it resist dust and very easy to maintain. You can notice that it is only the top that is changed. The trouser is still black, but the kind of black is different from the regular one," Onovo added.

Onovo however added that a plan is in the pipeline to improve the welfare of policemen.

"We are thinking on the direction of swelling up the welfare package of our men to make them feel a sense of belonging and perform.

"We want to make them feel safe and ready to sacrifice for the nation. So by the time we are through, we would have delivered a brand new Nigeria Police Force for Nigerians," Onovo stated.

Officers need to be neat while rank & file should appear in black uniform which they will never wash.

I think the IG knows that his men wouldn`t be able to maintain the new uniform as dirts is their second nature. We all know how far they have gone to maintain the black uniform that helps them to hide dirts. The new uniform could be very expensive for them to maintain. the IG should first re-orientate his men before introducing the new uniform to them.

Some of these men are good at wearing slippers and tattered jeans with torn bullet proof vest. I wonder how this new uniform will serve them any good.Sit near a junior police officer you may want to throw up. Will the junior officers be able to maintain the new uniform?

Maybe it`s in their own interest not to wear the new uniform. Lips sealed

Why is the guy segregating between members of the force? what is so special with the new uniform that he dont want junior officers to wear? anyway, if them meet for anywhere now, that feeling of inferiority will always be there.

During the time when Nigerian police was respectable and honorable force, the uniform of officers from junior inspector to inspector general of police was different from the uniform worn by the rank and file, thus, sergeants to constables. The era saw Nigerian police with different uniforms for different occasions.

There is nothing about segregation with different uniforms for officers and other ranks. Even in USA, several metropolitan police departments have different dress code for officers and other ranks.

to be sincere i dont all police men should be wearing the same uniform, having said that i think the uniform should be differentiated based on job function or role. for example police chopper pilots who are senior officers wouldnt wear the same uniform as the ig et al, while the guy standing in the sun should not be wearing that black on black thick material in 38 degree sun.

this is the exact point. The juniour police officers would turn the uniform into the kind of mess their barracks is into. Have you seen their barracks lately?
