I think she also raises very important questions of the growth of an African identity when you come to the US or the West. I for one never considered myself African until, I was confronted with the other, and I noticed many people too most especially Fela Kuti became of aware of the need of an African identity (as opposed to a nigerian or yoruba/igbo/hausa/whatever tribe one) since oyibo people dont really give a rat ass- you are black to them. lol, that is why I always find it funny when I read tribal threads.
