My Great grand father told me they used to own slave untill the British came in early 1900s. However, from what I understand, there is still some form of silent slavery that goes on in the Northern part of the country. Particularly with the emir because some still have concubines, (some still maintain upto 9 wives, while the Islam restricts them to 4)

When I was old enough to understand some of these things, during my national service(NYSC) in Nigeria, I tried to get as much information as possible.
There is also a Library in Sokoto: Waziri Junaidu Library, it contains ancient history of the North and the Sokoto caliphitate with documented evidences and diaries, some dating more than 500 years. Though most of them are writen in Hausa or fulani language with arabic scripts like the ones on Nigerian currency.
