Appeal Court Voids Omisore's Election.
« on: October 29, 2009, 02:24 PM »

Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, Iyiola Omisore, today lost his seat.

The court of Appeal, sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, nullified his election in the April 21, 2007 National Assembly polls for not complying with the Electoral Act.

The election, the court added, was marred by widespread violence, thuggery and malpractices.

It ordered that another election be held in 60 days

This is good for democracy. Atleast, all the lawmakers enjoying stolen mandates are being booted out. Good for democracy.

I'm happy that Maurice Iwu's useless "election" is being challenged successfully, but of what use is ordering another election with the same as the umpire? What will they do differently this time around? Omisore will still win the election again having accumulated so much money at the National Assembly while the poor opponent might need a fund raising camping to run for the election.

They say the wheel of justice is slow.

Am happy the guy has been booted out, another slap in the face for PDPand Inec for allowing

Omisore to file nomination papers from prison custody.

This development justifies the call for electoral reforms. The election tribunals must complete

their jobs before anybody is allowed to occupy any elective office.

A topic,
Even if he contest and wins again(I pray not), the mere fact their larger than life image is being dismantled all over the place gives cause for cheer. Now we know their cheating and perfidy just will not stand any true democratic test. Big up for the Judiciary!

The truth is Rotimi Makinde (a Yoruba movie Actor)- the AC candidate can't match Omisore in any way. I knew they both rigged in their various ways but the Big rigger won and that led to the violence between supporters of the two parties. I have friend's who worked for both candidates. But still, it's victory for democracy.

Point of Correction

According to the Nigerian law - senators or reps dont get tenure extension if they are relected after the original election has been annulled. so if a person is elected into the senate or house a day before the parliament is dissolved , then all you get is 1 day.

@pcicero, Rotimi Makinde was a candidate for the House of Reps, not Senate, Omisore's opponent is a Babajide Omoworare.
Sad part's d dude would get rigged back in so the judgement's got little to cheer about.

While Nigeria is just celebrating the conviction of OBJ's boy(olabode george) by a no-nonsense judge. With so much accolade going to the judiciary. The same judiciary in another quarter just sqaundered rule of law by ordering a "RE-RUN":
There was enough evidence to show that there was uninterrupted violence in the Osun state south-east senate election of 2007.
It would have been a landmark and pacesetting judgement if the judge decides to deduct the results of the violent-ridden wards/LG's from the total votes casted.
That would have been a more acceptable and credible decision. It would ave also sent a warning to vote-riggers that thweir days are numbered.

However,Iyiola Omisore enjoyed fat salary, allowances, etc as a (former) senator and such amount no matter how big should be returned to the senate's purse. The judge should have gone further to enforce that.

Re-run as proven to be more violent-ridden than the actual elections.Ekiti,Akoko-Edo,Osun,etc reruns and the emanating violence is still fresh in our memories.

Any judgement that you count in your mind to be good is applauded whereas any other one that you dont count good in your mind is seen as palbable. Why?

The conviction of Olabode george is NOT MY THOUGHT.Most Nigerians applauds the decision to send him to Kirikiri for mismanaging N84b.Some even profer he should have been given a longer jail term. For a former-president's close associate be sent to prison in Nigeria for stealing is worth commendable.
Our leaders and ruling class steal and gets away with it to the detriment of the poor masses. The wealth meant for the entire nation is being cornered by the mighty few.
If a judge did the right thing by jailing erring leaders, such judge will definitely enjoy the sympathy, applause and recognition of the teeming public.
